Work Text:
The vault was a boring place. Seeing the same people everyday. Having the same routine everyday, and eating the same food each day. But one person liked this routine, and it was someone named Ivy Cabble. Her family was known in the vaults, but she was often not looked at since she couldn’t have children. But she never really minded. She liked teaching the children of the vault everything. She was patient and sweet, yet still timid. She thought she would live forever in the vault, but that was until tragedy struck. Her vault was broken into by raiders, and they had taken most of the supplies and had killed most of the people in the vault. She somehow managed to escape the raiders and hide herself until they left.
When they left, she finally went out and only found 3 out of 40 vault dwellers alive, they mentioned that they could repopulate the vault since there were 3 women (including Ivy) and one guy. But Ivy told them that they wouldn’t last, and that would lead to incest and inbreeding. But they told her to leave the vault if she didn’t like the plan. After thinking it through, she wouldn’t benefit from it and there wasn’t a point of her staying other than teaching the inbred children. So she packed what she can and went to leave the vault. She left with about 3 stimpak, one sleeping bag, about 2 weeks worth of food and water if she was careful, a medkit as well just in case, and of course her jumpsuit and boots, and she finally went out to the wastelands.
The wastelands were a dangerous place for the average person. Raiders everywhere. Monsters are at places where you’d least expect them, and most towns have no one in them, but when they do have someone in them, they try sell you or they try sell you something you don’t need. But Max never minded this, just as long as she has food to keep her alive and water to drink. She traveled a lot and she had finally settled down in Goodsprings, not ideal but better than most places. But after getting her life threatened by some random people, she decided to leave Goodsprings, and try look for another place to call home.
As she walked through the wastelands to find a place, she accidentally found raiders who looked like they just raided some place with value. She tried to hide away from the raiders, but one had saw her and they immediately told their buddies. Then conflict occurred. They walked towards Max and immediately ganged up on her, leaving her with wounds and nothing with her. But as she sat down to check her wounds, she noticed a lady coming out of the same place the raiders came from, and had noticed, the woman was a vault dweller. The vault dweller noticed the injured woman and debated if she should run to aid, but after a few seconds, she ran to Max
“Are you okay?” Ivy questioned, her voice soft and clearly timid.
It took a second, but Max finally managed to speak, “yeah… just a few assholes took my stuff. I’m surprised they let me live.”
They looked at each other, then Ivy waited a bit then began to examine the injuries Max had.
“What are you doing?!” Max hissed, she backed away from Ivy.
“I’m trying to examine your injuries, if that’s okay with you…”
Max thought for a moment, then moved back to where she was sitting, allowing Ivy to check her. Ivy examined Max, then took out her medkit and began to disinfect Max’s wounds, then finally began to cover the wounds.
Max whimpered as Ivy cleaned her wounds, but tried to act tough while Ivy did her thing. Then after a few minutes, Ivy was finished, and Max had her injuries healed, or healed to an extent.
“Thank you.”
“It wasn’t a problem!” Ivy smiled weakly.
Then after a few seconds, they went into this awkward silence, which felt like it lasted longer than they expected. Then Max stood up.
“I should be leaving.”
Ivy thought for a moment, then spoke, “I should follow you, since you don’t have much… that is if you allow me to follow you, maybe I could help you with your journey! Whatever that may be…”
Max thought for a moment, then realized that it would be better if she did have someone to help her survive, and also… it wouldn’t hurt to have someone to talk to while on the road. Plus, Ivy did cure her wounds, so she did owe her.
“Fine, I’ll allow you to follow me, but please, don’t be a nuisance, I don’t want to deal with you running off for some stupid reason.”
“You have my word!” Ivy wasn’t the type to cause a ruckus, she was more timid than anything, and often followed rules. She was just glad to find an ally in her journey to survive.
