Work Text:
Dennis always saw himself as useless, as a child he was constantly picked by his brothers. He was weak, you would think because he worked in the farms for hours he'd have more strength than your average teenager but you're wrong. He had issues with his growth hormones, but his parents thought the doctors were just making things up to get their money. So he was shorter than everybody in his town.
He was skinnier. Until puberty, once he hit puberty he had the appetite of a elephant. He needed a snack every hour, he would quite literally pause his work to run into the kitchen for snacks. Nobody stopped him, his mom was happy he was actually eating instead of saying "I'm not hungry" and had snacks prepared all over the house.
The problem was that with him being short, gaining weight was easier. Sure the farm work helped manage his weight, but his petite body couldn't handle all the calories he was eating.
Which leads to the present. 26 years old, although he looks healthy looking he's not. He's starved himself so many times deciding between paying his debt or hunger and never had time to work out that his body is damaged. His face would tell you "I'm fit and skinny!" Just because he had a sharp jawline. But his stomach was a different story.
His stomach was just rolls and rolls, he hated it. Sometimes he would to grab a knife and just slice it away. Whenever he's around people he sucks in his stomach, even if it hurts his intestines. Even if it's hurts his lungs, but he likes it. He likes the praises.
Dennis woke up to the sun shining down on his face, Robby's were hugging him down onto the bed, while also having his face shoved on his pillow. Droll wetting it, Dennis tried checking the time by grabbing his phone. Unfortunately with Robby's body on top of him, moving wasn't an option. "Dammit Robby." Dennis said, sighing as his shoulders dropped. He slowly moved Robby's arms away from his body, once he moved all of Robby's limbs away from him he stood up slowly to slip his slippers on. He watched as Robby immediately began to hug a pillow, thinking it was Dennis. Dennis let out a silent laugh before leaving and closing the door, he walked downstairs to the kitchen.
He grabbed the tea kettle from the countertop and filled it with water before placing it on the stove, turning on the stove to heat the water up. He quickly unlocked the door and went outside to get the mail, he had forgotten to pick it up after work yesterday. He ran back inside after grabbing the mail. The cold morning air running down his back as he went back into his warm house, he immediately locked the door and placed the mail down. He checked the time on the stove, it was 5 in the morning. And today was a Thursday, they had the day off. Which meant Dennis had them all to himself, it was a rare occasion for both of them to get the day off.
Dennis thoughts were interrupted by the tea kettle whistling at a high pitch, he winced at the noise before turning down the heat. He opened the cupboards and grabbed both of their cups, placing them down with a clink he stared at them, wondering. What would it feel like, if they had another member? Someone who wasn't their age, but a baby. Dennis eyes widened at the thought, what was he thinking? Robby had never mentioned having babies, he probably didn't want any. Dennis thoughts were interrupted by the sound of Robby coming down stairs with a grunt
"Woah Dennis, I see you tried to trick me into thinking I was hugging you" as he made it to the bottom of the stairs, eyes connecting with Dennis eyes.
"Yeah well you're twice my size and you strangle me in your sleep" Dennis argued back, slapping Robby's head lightly. Robby winced and rubbed his head before looking back at Dennis. "What are you making?" Robby asked grabbing his own mug. "I was in the mood for tea today so I decided to make some for us." Dennis replied pouring tea into his and Robby's mug. "You're an angel, how did you know I was craving tea?" Robby smirked as he added a sugar cube.
Dennis snickered lightly as he too added sugar to his coffee. "We have the day off don't we? Why don't we go out to the stores, just to get out steps in. Also because I don't want to feel imprisoned." Dennis suggested sipping his coffee.
"You're right, well let's start making breakfast and after that we can go out?" Robby announced, at the same time Dennis nodded. "Right, well I'll get started and you just sit at the kitchen" Dennis said as he opened the oven to take out the pans, Robby nodded but leaned over the counters watching Dennis.
At last they were at the store, they had a grocery list to follow along with a few necessities for their bathroom. "I can go get the bathroom items, you can go get the rest. I'll meet you near the checkout in 20 yeah?" Dennis asked as he grabbed his own basket, Robby looked at him in confusion before nodding. "Alright, but call me if you need anything" Robby said as he patted his shoulder, Dennis nodded and walked away happily.
Once he made it to the cleaning aisle he began finding all the items they needed, he walked around the aisle distracted. Without noticing he managed to walk to the baby aisle, he stopped. Why the hell did he walk over here? They didn't have a baby nor planning to have one so why is he here? Yet, he couldn't help but stare at the onesies. The small outfits with animals, flowers patterns. The small socks that were smaller than his palm, the mittens that could barely fit 2 of his fingers, the small hats that were cotton inside to ensure comfort.
He felt warm inside, why? Was he that desperate to have kids, gosh. He would have to talk to him about this if it's becoming consistent, he checked his watch. 10 minutes left before he had to go back to the checkout, quickly he grabbed a gender neutral onesie and shoved it in his basket. He walked quickly to the checkout and checked out his basket with the one side, hiding it at the bottom of his bag. He texted Robby that he'd be waiting at the entrance, before shoving his phone away.
The Pitt was loud. Too loud. Everyday is loud but today was worse, first, a car crash leading to a car pile up. They lost many victims, one of them broke Dennis heart. A mother who was near her due date had died, Dennis felt tears pricked at his eyes. But there wasn't any time to grieve, because soon after they had a patient who was being aggressive tried attacking Trinity.
Trinity being Trinity tried attacking back, they had to restraint her. She was spewing out curse words faster than he could comprehend.
And as if today wasn't bad enough, he and Robby were sent to the pediatric ward. A newborn baby was left abandoned, the mother who had given birth only a few hours ago was missing. They stood there accessing the baby who was fussy, they wouldn't stop crying or moving around. The nurses tried calming them down but nothing worked.
Until.
"Hand me the baby." Robby announced, he sanitized his hands and shoved gloves on. The nurse looked at him before carefully handing him the baby, Robby carefully cradled their head. Rocking them as they became silent, just staring at him. Dennis stared in awe. He came closer to Robby. He wanted to pretend that Robby was holding their baby, their baby that Dennis birthed.
Dennis tucked his chin on Robby's shoulder as he touched the baby's cheek. "Hello cutie, yes you are the most adorable baby." He cooed, the baby let out a gummy smile before yawning. Dennis baby fever was out of the roof, he needs a baby. He wants one, he's desperate for one.
"Robby, I want a baby." Dennis whispered to Robby's ear, Robby tensed up at that. Looking around to make sure no one heard that before responding back. "Dennis, baby boy. Let's save that conversation for when were at home, not here in public." Robby explained before handing the baby back to another nurse, Dennis visibly frowned at that but nodded. Soon they were swept away to another case, but even as they were being busy. Robby and Dennis couldn't stop thinking about what just happened.
By the time they got home it was afternoon, Robby sighed kicking his shoes off, not even bothering to put them on the rack. Dennis the clean whore put his shoes neatly on the rack and Robby's shoes, they both went up the stairs to get out of these scrubs and change into something more comfortable. Robby took longer because he complained about "back pain" while he took his time Dennis decided to start on dinner, he was starving like a lion. He decided to just pop in a frozen pizza in the over, he took out all the pans before pre heating the oven.
Dennis heard Robby sigh behind him, as Robby held him by the waist. Snuggling into his neck, pressing kisses down his neck. Dennis shivered. "Robby I'm trying to heat the pizza, don't make this more difficult than it has to be." Dennis laughed out trying to pry off Robby, Robby whined before chuckling and letting him go. Walking away to go watch the tv.
Dennis shook his head before shoving the pizza in the oven, it'd take almost an hour to cook the pizza so he'd pass time by watching the tv with Robby. Sitting down near him they sat silent for a while, Dennis wanted to bring up their conversation from the hospital. But obviously he was too nervous, picking at his dead skin on his fingers.
Finally, after what seemed like an eternity Robby cleared his throat. "So, why exactly did you being the baby topic up at work." Robby turned his head to look at Dennis, Dennis looked at everything but Robby.
"Uh well, I don't know if I'm going crazy. Maybe I am but.. I've been having so many thoughts of us having a baby, I know we've never talked about this and it's totally okay if you don't want to have any kids and —"
"Whitaker!" Robby grabbed Dennis by the cheeks to look at him, Dennis eyes were red, pooling with tears that threatened to fall.
"Dennis, baby. Of course I want children, I'm not getting any younger am I?" Robby chuckled, but Dennis didn't. Just kept staring at him. Robby sighed before continuing.
"Listen, I've always wanted a family. I've dreamed of it every night, I was just worried about your decision. I wanted to wait until you said something, I thought you didn't want any since you've also never talked about having babies."
Dennis kept staring at him as if he grew two heads.
"Are you serious? I thought you didn't want any because well, you've also never talked about it" both Dennis and Robby kept looking at each other with wide eyes.
"So does this mean we're going to start trying for children?" Robby questioned with a smirk.
Dennis blushed at Robby's word, but nodded.
Robby got up suddenly and picked him up from the couch. "Hey! Robby your back!" Dennis yelled trying to get off, Robby just chuckled. "Don't worry about mine, worry about yours." Robby stepped into their room and dropped him onto their bed. "Let's get wild." Robby said before slamming his lips onto Dennis who melted into the action.
This was gonna be a wild ride.
It had been almost around 2 months since that conversation, during that period of time Dennis had been anxious. Every little symptom he had kept leading him back to pregnancy, every what if led to pregnancy, everything reminded him of pregnancy. Even the hospital. He was definitely going crazy, but lately he hadn't been feeling well. He hadn't been able to keep anything down, he was tired even after sleeping for more than 10 hours, and he felt so sore. His stomach too, it was always squishy, but not it felt hard. Like brick hard. Was this pregnancy or just him having a disease? He hadn't told Robby anything.
No way, he needs to confirm this with someone. But who? It can't be Robby because he's too scared to disappoint him, but it also can't be any of his friends because a lot of them can't keep secrets out their mouths. So who?
Dennis keeps thinking, until.
Trinity!
He can trust her, she's been with him through tough times, she literally found him under the abandoned wing of the hospital. She helped him move in with her, they shared almost everything. Their clothes, body washes, perfumes, food, drinks. She literally helped him and Robby get together. Why wouldn't he trust her? She was also great at keeping secrets, she kept the secret do him living in the hospital until Dennis told Robby himself.
He has to tell her tomorrow, whether it's text to in person he has to. But for now he needs to focus on what he's going to make for dinner, they probably don't have anything so he'll just doordash.
Dennis was pacing around the Pitt trying to find Trinity, out of all days why couldn't he find her?! After almost 20 minutes of walking around asking for her he found her, she in the storage room. What the hell? He had just been there almost 5 minutes ago, whatever.
"Hey Huckleberry, what's with your face" Trinity asked, grabbing a few things to place onto the tray.
"I need help, first hear me out. This will seem crazy" Dennis warned, Trinity raised an eyebrow but didn't say anything.
"Okay, I need you to do an ultrasound on me."
It was dead silent for what felt like hours when it was only a minute.
Trinity laughed, like full on laughed.
"What? Why? Did old man baby trap you?" Trinity laughed out loud, Dennis tried shushing him while also trying to be quiet.
"It's not the time to joke around! You need to help me, I'm freaking out because I'm having the symptoms but I don't want to disappoint Robby. I already make so many mistakes in our relationship!" Dennis said flaring his arms everywhere, Trinity stopped laughing and sighed.
"Okay right, alright let's see if I can find a machine near." She immediately left the room, leaving Dennis alone to process his thoughts.
After what seemed like an eternity Trinity came back, grabbed his arm, and dragged him to a private room. There the ultrasound machine was all ready.
"Alright Huckleberry, pull up your shirt." She announced as she grabbed the gel bottle, Dennis pulled up his shirt and laid on the bed.
"Ah shit!" Dennis jumped at the feeling of the cold gel.
"Stay still or I'll hit you with the wand" Trinity threatened as she turned on the machine, moving the wand around Dennis kept trying to peek at was she was looking.
Then, Trinity gasped. Dennis looked like he wanted to explode.
"What's wrong? Am I dying? Am I pregnant? Or is it just gas! Tell me!" Dennis gripped Trinity sleeves before she pulled away.
"Dude don't panic, but I gotta say. I didn't know old man still was fertile."
Dennis jaw dropped to the floor, did this mean he was expecting?
"Congrats Huckleberry, you're exactly at least two month along." Trinity clapped quietly as she watched Dennis eyes grow tears.
He couldn't believe it, he's expecting Robby's baby, a mini version of themselves.
"Are they healthy?" Dennis asked, Trinity hummed looking at the machine before responding.
"It's too early to see anything, but if estimating I think they're healthy. But don't rely on me, you should talk to Robby as soon as possible to get an OB." Trinity suggested cleaning Dennis up.
"Right, I'll talk to him during dinner. He's going to be so excited, I can't wait for every milestone. Seeing my bump grow, cravings, buying baby clothes and items, packing my hospital bag. I'm just so excited"
"What about telling everyone? They're going to find out so you might as well tell them sooner or later." Trinity raised an eyebrow.
"Ah right, well I only want this to be between you, me, and Robby. I want to wait until I'm out of the first trimester. Once that's done me and Robby will announce it, I just don't want to get everyone's hopes up and then it turns out I miscarry and I have to get pity looks." Dennis chuckled lightly.
"Hm, right. We'll I respect your decision, and I'm happy for you. Now we should get back out there, I'm sure McKay is going to give us a long scolding for not helping out"
Trinity and Dennis both laughed at that as they left the room and went back to working.
Dennis and Robby sighed in relief once they got home, it had been a long enduring shift. They were swept off their feet every moment, Dennis didn't even have time to eat his lunch.
"Should we get takeout? I don't feel in the mood to cook" Dennis suggested, Robby sighed nodding before leaving.
Dennis knew why he was like that, today they had a senior patient who reminded Robby of his grandma. She had came in with chest pain that soon escalated to a heart attack, she had no family. She died alone, while Robby held her hand because she was afraid of dying alone.
Dennis felt guilty, he tried saving the woman but nothing worked. It had been to late.
Dennis sighed before going on his phone to order, he'd ordered Robby's favorite food form his favorite restaurant. Hope the news he's going to give to Robby will make him happier.
By the time Robby came down the food was already on the table, with Dennis placing their mats, plates, and cups down.
"We should start eating, I have some news that you'll be happy about" Dennis smiled at Robby, Robby just gave him a forced smile and began eating.
It was awkward, no one talking. Every now and then there was noises from the outside, or a cough here and there. But it was dead silent.
Once they've finished Dennis helped wash the dishes, he took advantage of this time to tell Robby.
"Robby, I—uh gosh how do I say this." Dennis tried finding the right words, but nothing came to mind. So he just blurted it out.
"I'm pregnant!" Robby turned to stare at him, great job Dennis you just ruined your relationship.
"Seriously?" Oh my gosh this was the end was it? He's going to have to move out, live on the streets or maybe back at the abandoned wing of the hospital or—"
"Dennis, are you serious?" Robby asked one more time.
"Yes, I'm sorry if it wasn't the right time but I needed to tell you because Trinity told me to tell you so you can get me an OB!" Dennis was out of breath after that, he was too afraid to look at Robby. Robby was quiet, he's probably going to tell him to get out, right?
Instead, Robby hugs him tightly, soapy hands wetting the back of Dennis shirt as Robby kisses him and cries on his shoulder. Dennis stood stunned for a moment, before hugging his neck and kissing him back.
"Is this real? I never thought this would happen, my gosh I'm so happy my heart rate is probably out the roof" Dennis and Robby both laughed at that, they were going to be parents soon.
"This means it won't be us anymore, no more quiet time. This is our life now."
"Yeah, it's scary to think in 9 months or so we're going to meet our new family member" Dennis couldn't believe he's going to start growing a new human, a whole human being that will live in this world, grow up in this world, become their own person.
"I've never been happier, everyday I wake up thinking my life can't get any better than this, and look, I've been proven wrong." Robby chuckled, placing his hand on Dennis stomach.
"I'll be here with you through every milestone, whether it's bad or good, whether you're crying or not, whether it's disgusting or not. I don't want to miss anything. In fact were going to take emergency leave, just to find an OB, get appointments ready, and maybe start buying baby clothes" Robby suggested rambling on and on.
"Robby no! We're understaffed already, and I haven't even experienced morning sickness yet. Also we should wait until the second trimester, I don't want us buying items for our baby and then I suddenly miscarry and we have baby clothes that'll keep dragging us and reminding us of what happened."
Dennis looked at Robby with sad eyes, Robby sighed but nodded.
"You're right, I should've asked what you wanted. How about we talk about this tomorrow, let's get some rest? Tomorrow were taking the day off so we can get everything adjusted."
Dennis wanted to argue back, but there was no point. Robby would win, so he nodded and they both went up to their bedroom.
Wow, today was a rollercoaster of emotions.
2nd month.
Dennis awoke earlier than his alarm, 30 minutes before it rang. That was unusual, on regular days he woke up either to his alarm ringing or 5 minutes after it rang.
The reason why was because today they had an appointment to meet their OB, Dennis was already stressing out. He hadn't had any symptoms besides nausea, he felt like throwing up everyday but nothing ever came out besides gagging.
His thoughts were interrupted by Robby moving besides him to sit up.
"Morning love, why are you up so early?" Robby asked, massaging his temples.
"Eh I just woke up early, I have lingering nausea from yesterday but nothing comes out. My chest feels so sore too."
Robby frowned grabbing Dennis by the arm to move him closer to him.
"Why didn't you wake me up, I could've brewed you some tea, given you medicine, or a massage"
Robby held Dennis who kept his head under Robby's chin, Dennis felt so tired but he knew they couldn't miss their appointment.
"Let's just get the day over, I'm already dreading to be back on our bed."
Both Dennis and Robby sat up, getting ready together.
Dennis decided to hop in the shower while Robby started on breakfast, he needed to freshen up before going to his appointment.
He striped down and got inside the steaming shower, letting the water drip on him. He looked down at his stomach, it was flat. But what made him insecure was how it had rolls, he'd try everything but no exercise helped. His doctor had told him he needed surgery, but he wasn't about to tell Robby he wanted to get surgery.
He knew Robby would try to talk him out of that, saying his body was perfect. But he never felt perfect, he felt everyone's eyes on his stomach, judging him every second.
At least when he gains weight, people will look at him with awe at his stomach instead of the same judgement.
Dennis jumped when Robby knocked on the door, he immediately turned off the water and wrapped himself into a towel.
He unlocked the door looking at Robby through his dripping hair.
"Sorry, you were taking longer than usual and I was afraid something was happening to you and I couldn't save you"
Robby smirked joking, Dennis chuckled walking past him to get changed. Robby trailed behind him, sitting down on the bed watching Dennis move.
Dennis felt embarrassed, they'd been together since Dennis started at the Pitt but he still felt embarrassed letting Robby see his naked body.
He flinched feeling Robby's hands on his waist.
"I can't wait to see your bump, seeing you grow with my baby is making me excited."
Rubby rubbed his hands through Dennis stomach.
"I'm not excited, you're pretty tall and I just know our baby is going to take after you. I'm going to have to push a 10 pound baby out and you'll be there relaxed"
Dennis laughed snuggling with Robby.
"I won't be relaxed, I can't relax while you're in pain. Crying, screaming, or even just sleeping. I'll be on alert every single second until tou give birth, and even after that I'll still be on alert during postpartum."
Robby kissed Dennis cheeks and lips, Dennis kept smiling before pushing him away.
"Okay okay, now let me get changed or else we're going to be late and then we'll have to reschedule"
"Fine, but once were back in going to shower you in kisses"
Dennis chuckled before kissing Robby one last time before getting changed.
———————————
At the doctor's office everything felt wrong, Dennis was afraid they'd tell him he miscarried. Every second of this pregnancy he was afraid he'd wake up one morning and his baby is gone. The moment they called his name he kept trembling, when he tried to stand up he almost fell over.
Thankfully Robby had been there and held him up.
"Careful love, don't rush one step at a time."
Robby grabbed Dennis by the arm, carefully guiding him as they followed the nurse.
They were guided to a small room before the nurse put down her clipboard.
"Doctor Oakwood will be here shortly, in the meantime try to get yourself relaxed"
She suggested before leaving.
They were left with their thoughts, they both had something to say but clearly couldn't get it out their throats. Silenced filled the room es they kept quiet till they heard the door open, the doctor was waving goodbye at someone before entering.
"Good morning to I assume are Robby and Dennis"
"Good morning doctor Oakwood"
Dennis and Robby both said at the same time.
"I assume today is your first prenatal appointment hm?"
Dr.Oakwood asked as she sat down at her desk
"Yes uhm, I recently found out I was pregnant but I wanted someone who was actually in the field to confirm it"
Dennis said, picking at his fingers while Robby's legs were bouncing up and down.
"Okay, well today we're just going to get through the basics we're going to get you tested to see if you are pregnant, we can do an ultrasound although it'll be hard to see, and we can go through what the first trimester feels like and the rules. Sounds good?"
Dr.Oakwood asked as she grabbed gloves and slapped them on her hand.
"Yeah that's perfect"
"Alright then, let's get your vitals first before we do anything"
Dr.Oakwood grabbed her medical instruments and took Dennis heart rate, blood pressure, and lungs before writing it down on her computer.
"Okay so if you could please pee in this cup so we can get the results as quick as possible"
Dr.Oakwood handed a clear cup with a lid to Dennis, who nodded and stood up to leave.
Once again, it was silent besides Dr.Oakwood humming.
"Both of you guys work at the Pitt right?"
Dr.Oakwood asked curiously as she typed faster than a lion.
"Yeah, I've been working there for years but for Dennis it's only been a couple of years"
Dr.Oakwood hums. "I see, you guys get an advantage then for maternity leave since all of you guys are medical professionals"
Robby chuckled before quieting down when Dennis came back, handing the cup to Dr.Oakwood.
"Alright thank you, I'll be back in a few minutes as I hand these to the lab"
Dr.Oakwood stepped out, leaving Robby and Dennis waiting.
Robby just took out his phone and started scrolling on his feed, Dennis had nothing else to do so he leaned over to watch with Robby.
Time passed quicker than they thought and Dr.Oakwood came back sooner.
"Okay I'm back, and by the looks of your labs it is indeed that you are pregnant, congratulations Dennis"
Dr.Oakwood clapped as Dennis smiled, Robby hugged him. He still couldn't believe that he was going to have his own child, no matter how many times someone says it, it still feels unreal.
"So now that we have confirmation, would you like to take a look on the ultrasound to make sure the baby is healthy?"
Dr.Oakwood asked as she started preparing the table as if she already knew the answer.
"Yes of course"
Dennis said quickly smiling so hard his cheeks were hurting.
Dr.Oakwood laughed before patting the ultrasound exam table.
"Okay, well if you could lay down here we can get you going"
Dennis nodded as he stood up to lay on the table, Robby followed him and kept a steady grip on his hand as they watched Dr.Oakwood get the gel ready.
"Alright Dennis, lift your shirt up please"
She asked as the gel bottle hovered over his stomach, Dennis again nodded and lifted his shirt up.
Dr.Oakwood carefully placed a small amount of gel on his stomach before pressing the probe on his stomach.
There was nothing to see at first, which worried Dennis.
But soon they heard it.
A loud noise.
It was music to Dennis ears.
His baby heartbeat.
"There we go, from what I can see you're 2 months pregnant"
Dennis tears were falling down his face as he stared at the screen, that small black dot was his.
Dennis looked over to Robby, who was crying uncontrollably. His nose and eyes were red, his lower face was covered in tears as he tried to stop them.
"Would you like a few prints of your scans?"
Dr.Oakwood asked she passed Dennis a tissue to clean his stomach.
"Yes please"
Dennis said as he wiped his stomach.
"Alright, I'll be back in a minute"
Dr.Oakwood said as she walked out leaving Dennis and Robby staring at each other.
"This is real, we're going to be parents soon. I can't believe it."
Robby said as he kissed Dennis hand, Dennis blushed at the motion.
"Me neither, it feels like a dream. And if it is I hope it doesn't end."
"I hope so too."
Robby leaned in for a kiss before being interrupted by Dr.Oakwood coming in.
"Oh I am so sorry, but I have your scans ready"
She handed them over to both of them, 4 prints of their baby, the first pictures of them.
"Alright now that we have that out of the way I would like to talk about family history and your rules for pregnancy now"
Dennis nodded before responding.
"Well I don't think I have a lot of medical history, I grew up in an Amish family so we didn't believe in medicine. I only just recently gotten insurance for my daily medical check ups." Dennis confessed before it was Robby's turn.
"I don't remember a lot honestly, I grew up with my grandma but she seemed healthy but you know old people develop a lot of health issues. But it's never been passed down to me or any of my family, not that I'm aware of."
Dr.Oakwood nodded writing down before continuing.
"Okay well we can talk about this another appointment, now listen carefully. Now that you're pregnant Dennis you need to be more careful, when we looked at your labs you seem to have hypotension. Have you been aware of that?"
Dennis was stunned, he knew he had low blood pressure but he never thought it was like that.
"I— I did not know that.."
"Well considering we caught that early you're in the high risk category, we can help you sign up with a specialist if you want"
Dennis and Robby looked at each other.
"Do it, please my love. I don't want to loose neither you or our baby"
Robby pleaded, Dennis hated seeing Robby like that so he nodded.
"Yes please, I'll look into that too"
"Okay, here take this pamphlet, you can get all the information about high risk pregnancies, what you can and can't do, and what you can and can't eat"
Dr.Oakwood passed him the pamphlet, Dennis took it nodding.
"Okay, seems like our appointment is over. I'll see you next appointment and if you have any questions you can call our office"
Dennis and Robby got up, heading out of the hospital and into their car.
Honestly none of what the doctor said eased Dennis nerves, but as long as he followed the pamphlet everything would be okay.
3rd Month.
Dennis knew Robby's genetics were probably going to overpower his, I mean he's tall, larger muscles, and he has so much hair on his body.
But what Dennis didn't expect was his bump to grow at a faster pace, it wasn't large but it was noticable enough to know he was expecting.
He kept staring at himself at the mirror, the body length one they put in their living room so Dennis could take pictures.
And honestly, it amazed him and scared him at the same time.
He was glad his baby was eating and growing well, considering how many times he throws up in a day.
But another part of him gnaws at him.
He's putting on weight already when he's barely into the first trimester.
His stomach was also more like a belly pooch, it wasn't round yet but more of "hey I'm chubby!" Type.
It didn't bother Robby because he had a pooch too, but for Dennis it felt like the end of the world for him.
Maybe I need to stop eating so much and control my habits.
Dennis thoughts swarmed in like a bed hive, all he was thinking about was food and stopping.
"What are you thinking about so hard my love?"
Robby's hands were slowly out on his stomach to rub his stomach.
"Nothing much, just realizing I have a small pooch bump at only 3 months"
"Well I think it's amazing, our baby is growing healthy. And hey, not every pregnancy is perfect or the same"
Robby kissed Dennis cheek before walking to the kitchen, opening their medicine cabinet he took out 3 bottles. Two was Dennis medicine to control his hypotension and third bottle was his prenatal vitamins.
"Chug them down"
He handed Dennis the pills.
Dennis groaned but nonetheless took the pills dry swallowing them.
"We have our third month appointment don't we? How about we eat on the way since our appointment is almost in an hour"
Robby pointed out on his watch.
"That's fine, were already running late so we should change"
Robby nodded, they both went upstairs, hands together.
---------------------------
Dennis was sitting on their couch waiting for Robby, he couldn't find any clean shirts and Dennis had forgotten where he had folded Robby's shirts.
His phone rang with a message from Trinity.
He didn't open the message but saw the notification.
Hey Huckleberry, I heard you started showing. Be a nice friend and sent me a picture of my future niece or nephew. NOW.
Tch, loud mouth Robby.
Dennis already knew Robby was telling Trinity about his bump, he stood up ready to take the picture on their mirror when Robby finally came back.
"Took me a minute to find my polo shirt but here we are—what are you doing?"
Dennis stood frozen for a second, a hand smoothing down his shirt to show his bump, and his camera on his phone.
"I'm taking a picture of my bump because someone decided to go around and tell Trinity about me showing"
Robby chuckled "I wonder who could that be"
Robby said, wiggling his eyebrows while Dennis laughed.
"Robby, you look like you have a bump too!"
Dennis pointed out, pointing with his finger.
"I guess I do hey? But this one is full of your delicious cooking, you have a baby in yours"
Dennis chuckled, leaning in closer before snapping a side picture of his bump next to Robby stomach.
"When should we tell the Pitt? I'm almost in my second trimester, and it's really warm during these seasons and I don't think I can survive hiding my bump any longer with a hoodie"
"After this appointment we can tell them? I know you must be uncomfortable in this heat and pregnant so we'll tell them soon, also just to have a few extra eyes looking at for you because of your condition"
"You're right, we should start get going, so we at least have time to eat on the way and we're not caught with a sandwich in the waiting room"
Robby chuckled at Dennis comment, resting a hand on Dennis back and guiding him to outside the door to their appointment.
4th Month.
October came and it hit Dennis hard, the nausea went away but now he just felt like a truck decided to run him over a thousandth times.
He wore Robby's sweaters to cover his bump, but even that wasn't working anymore. His bump was more prominent and he could tell at least 2 people or more have caught onto his secret.
Not only that but he's been having ligament pain in his lower abdomen and pelvis, every night he has Robby massage it but that isn't working anymore.
Another issues was his increase in hunger, he couldn't go 30 minutes without a snack. And with that comes side effects, he keeps having indigestion, constipation, and heartburn.
He hopes his daughter has a full head of hair, because his body is working overtime to get through these heartburns.
And lastly, his skin. Lately it's gotten more red, with acne building up. He knows it's normal but it makes him insecure, his face (mostly forehead) is covered in pimples. No matter what he uses it won't go away, he's literally drowned himself in oatmeal water but it did nothing but make his face dry and itchy!
Dennis sighs, walking to the break room. He needs a snack and his feet hurt from running around to chart patients and chase them on a gurney.
He finds Trinity sitting down at a table eating a granola bar.
"Huckleberry! What are you up to?"
"Nothing much, I'm just sore and I'm in need for a snack"
Dennis answers, stealing an extra bar from her pocket.
They stay quiet for a while, scrolling on their phones. Dennis feels a weird ache in his stomach, but he doesn't over think.
It's probably the fact I'm not following the diet.
Dennis thinks, everything's been going well during his pregnancy so there shouldn't be any reason for an ache. Maybe it's his indigestion.
Dennis shrugs before getting up, he doesn't want to get scolded by Dana for sitting around, they're already understaff.
"You're done eating? Shouldn't you be sitting down for a bit more, you have to be constantly on your feet for 12 hours. That can't be good for my niece"
"First of Dana or Mckay will slap my ass if I dare to get more break time, second I'm getting my steps in so that's good, and third Trinity. We don't know the gender so stop misgendering them"
Dennis jabbed a finger at Trinity forehead, Trinity rolled her eyes as he walked away, turning his back she gave the middle finger.
——————————————
Dennis should've probably listened to Trinity, his stomach was aching badly. He wasn't sure if it was his baby giving flutters, or if something was actually wrong. Robby has been busy all day, being taken away from nurses and patients so he hasn't had the chance to express his concerns.
He definitely won't tell Trinity because she's loud and he's not trying to get everyone's attention. So he'll wait at home, maybe by that time the ache will disappear.
But oh boy how wrong was he, by the time him and Robby got home the ache just worsened. And he felt the need to use the bathroom.
He ran to the hallway, slamming the door once he was in the bathroom to relieve himself.
What he didn't expect was to see spotting, small amounts of blood on his thighs and boxers.
Oh shit.
"R—Robby! I need you in here right now!"
Dennis voice was urgent, trembling. Robby ran to the bathroom, finding Dennis standing up with blood on his fingers.
"I—I don't know if I'm just bleeding or I'm miscarrying.."
Dennis voice shook, Robby froze for a minute processing everything before taking Dennis arm.
"Get your coat back on, we're going to the hospital and calling your OB and specialist"
Dennis didn't even try to argue, he just out his coat and and followed Robby.
The car ride was intense, Dennis kept thinking about how he already loss the baby and he was a failure.
Robby kept thinking about how he was going to lose Dennis and the baby, how he should've notice earlier, he should've paid attention more.
When they arrived at the Pitt Robby immediately gets out the car to tell Jack to get a gurney and help Dennis out the car, Dennis was worrying on how everyone was going to find out about his pregnancy.
It was supposed to be something more neat, happier, not this.
Jack helped Robby get Dennis onto the gurney, Robby shouted orders. Even if he wasn't on shift he was still going to take measures to save both of them.
The room flooded in with nurses and doctors, people he's talked go and known. They were in shock about the news, but kept a steady pace.
Hooking him up to everyone machine and needle, he felt like a doll.
The last thing Dennis remembered was Jack shouting about him bleeding more, and Robby trying to get him awake.
When Dennis awoke he felt so sore, and his body felt as if it had been poked with a knife.
He turned his head to the side to see Robby outside with Jack, they've must've been discussing something serious because Robby's face was just red and anger.
He tried bending his arm but found it was covered in snakes of needles, was his baby okay?
He tried to say something out load, but the only thing he croaked out was a painful moan. That caught the attention of Robby who immediately came back into the room.
"Dennis, Dennis sweetheart are you okay? Do you need any numbing medicine?"
Robby asked frantically, Jack was looking over his vitals.
"N—no, I'm just very delirious, is the baby okay?"
"Yes they're okay, you're okay too"
"Then what happened, why did I start bleeding.."
Dennis eyes filled with tears, had he done something to his baby without knowing?
"You were stressed, Dennis baby—you need to put yourself first before your patients. This could've ended wrong if you had waited a longer time to tell me"
Robby stroked Dennis hair back, Dennis leaned into the touch.
"Does everybody know about—you know this.."
Dennis gestured to his stomach, letting his hand fall onto it.
"Only the nightshift, but you know how everyone likes to gossip. Hopefully the morning shift doesn't find out"
"I hope so too, I wanted to surprise everyone with a cake at least, or even a dinner"
Dennis frowned, watching as Jack left the room to give them privacy.
"We're going to your OB tomorrow, they couldn't come at this hour but they expect us at his office tomorrow in the morning sharp. They want to evaluate you and the baby, maybe put you on bed rest"
"That's—that's fine"
Dennis hated the idea of being on bed rest, not having anything to do, being useless. But he knew if he didn't his baby wouldn't be born healthy. So he'd listen to whatever this doctor said.
5th Month.
After the incident he ended up being diagnosed with Preeclampsia, he had to get more frequent appointments and blood work done.
He wasn't allowed to work for a week, that raised eyebrows until someone overheard Jack and they of course decided to tell their friend.
Which led to another friend, another, and soon everyone knew.
Everyone became cautious around him, asking him to sit when he'd already sat 10 minutes ago.
But he doesn't blame them, since he's 5 months along his stomach just started looking as if he was 8 months along.
His back ached and his legs had swollen to the point he has Robby put his socks and shoes on, he's also started to forget everything.
He could be standing in the middle of the hospital, trying to find out what he was doing.
The only pro was that his hair became thicker, shiny, and silky.
Every night after showering Robby would dry his hair and brush it out, leaving it silky and curly.
Dennis loved it.
—————————————
Dennis was dragging himself across the hospital, he wasn't in a good mood today.
He had been crying last night because his legs swelled up so badly he couldn't walk, and he wanted a craving.
Then the baby kicked for the first time, it was cute but then it continuously happened while he tried sleeping.
And now, before clocking in he didn't want to leave his bed. He was so exhausted but he had to save his days, he was going on maternity leave soon and he was already taken 2 days off of it because of the incident.
That left him with only 3 months and a week to recover, and although that seems like less, when working as a doctor 3 months is like a year to you.
Robby only got a month, since Dennis was high risk they gave him extra weeks.
But Dennis hoped he would've gotten at least a year off, his OB told him that during postpartum he needs to be in bed rest for a month.
Dennis thoughts were interrupted as they had a patient wheeled in, he followed behind slowly trying to keep up.
A traumatic car accident happened, the driver's car was blown up from a nearby truck fire.
Dennis tried helping but everyone kept pushing him back, saying he needs to get out of this.
What the hell? Why are they telling him, a doctor to get out? Even the students are doing the same, just because he's pregnant doesn't mean he's handicapped.
He tries pushing them but what ends up happening is a student bumps him, he falls onto the ground with an oof. Catching the attention of everyone.
Mostly Robby, who immediately ran to help him up.
"Dennis are you okay, we told you to get out!"
"But why! I'm trying to help and all of you guys are acting as if I hadn't spend years studying and working"
"Dennis we'll talk later, just get out"
Dennis huffed angrily before stomping away, he sits down in Robby's chair and starts charting patients. That's quite literally the only thing he can do now.
Dana must've seen everything because she rubbed a hand on his back.
"Tough right? Don't worry Dennis, he's worried and they're all worried. You're high risk, anything small can lead to a premature birth"
Dana said smoothly, her tone was so gently and soothing. But right now that didn't seem to calm Dennis.
"I get it, but why? I understand my body limits and all I want to do is help, what's wrong with that?!"
"Dennis sweetie, it's you and Robby's first time being parents. He's worried about every little thing and you too, he just wants the best. But if he tries to be a dickhead and won't let you actually check a patients vitals, I will slap the shit out of him"
Dennis chuckled at her statement, nodding before paying his attention back at his charting.
That night Dennis and Robby talked it out, Robby would still be monitoring him. But now Dennis was allowed to do anything, as long as it didn't involve an aggressive patient, running, or harming him or the baby.
6th Month.
If Dennis knew how bad Braxton hicks hurt, he would've never told his patients to just 'breath through them'
Every hour it would happen, and although it barely hurt. It made him have to sit down, it felt uncomfortable feeling everything tightened.
He's also stopped sleeping with Robby, Dennis has hot flashes during sleep.
And although it's only November he keep sweating as if it's July.
His face has swelled up badly, he can tell people are concerned.
He used to have a slim face, prominent cheekbones. Now his cheeks are puffy, and he knows it means he's eating well.
But it just feels like he's only gaining weight instead of actually giving his baby nutritions.
Robby has reassured him that everytime he eats the baby eats too, Dennis knows he himself too. But he can't help but doubt.
——————————————
He's been assigned to a patient who needs a new cast after it had gotten wet, the room is literally across the whole hospital. It takes him 10 minutes to get there, back then it only took him 5 minutes. But with his large bump he waddles slowly, the baby's must've taken Robby genetics because they're giant. Almost 5 pounds now, their kicks feel like they're trying to escape.
Once he gets to the room, he starts getting the cast and his patient arm ready.
By the time he finished he's huffing and sweating, his patient noticed and helps him stand up.
Dennis would've been embarrassed but right now that was the least of his concerns, his concern was how he wanted to just get bare naked right now from the heat.
He discharged the patient and leaves to the break room to sit down, he's in there for an hour. He doesn't realize it, but when you're pregnant time seems to pass by like lightning.
Mel storms in looking distraught.
"Dennis! Oh my god! We've been looking for you, Robby just assigned you to a patient who has pneumonia"
"Seriously? Gosh I am so sorry, I just needed a break. Give me the details of the patient and I'll get started"
Dennis stood up huffing, walking alongside Mel and she explained what was wrong with the patient.
"She's been recently diagnosed with pneumonia, but she thinks it's something worse because her breath sounds like a motorcycle?"
Dennis hums, he pulls the curtain to find his patient laying down.
Dennis introduces himself and leans over her body to connect her to an oxygen mask, she explained everything from the start.
Dennis tried paying attention but his bump was making everything difficult, everytime he leaned over her his belly bumped with her arm. He could tell he was making her uncomfortable.
Once everything was settled he let Mel and Javadi take over, he left the room to go chart.
He sat down to his computer, but instead of doing work he was on the Internet, he was looking through nursery's.
One specifically caught his eye, a room that was neutral, filled with cows.
Dennis favorite animal was a cow, he grew up watching them, feeding them, riding them.
He loved them, the idea of decorating his baby's nursery was just making him feel like sugar.
7th Month.
Dennis and Robby found out their baby's gender a week ago, a little girl.
Dennis could already vision Robby being a girl dad, it brought him so much joy.
They agreed to go shopping for the baby and for Dennis hospital bag, they decided to go a nursery boutique.
It was so calming, it smelled like rosemary, everything was organized.
They first started on the cribs, their baby's room wasn't particularly big but they've calculated that it was the perfect size.
They didn't want to get a giant crib, after a while they would probably leave it and use their own bed. So they bought a small bassinet that had a mobile with cows and stars, it was so beautiful.
They then decided in the rest of the furniture, a changing table with many drawers, a rocking chair, a dresser, a few hangers for clothes, a night lamp, sound machine, a diaper pail, blackout curtains, and a small side table.
They then headed to the baby's aisle, where Dennis raided the whole aisle.
Every single piece of clothing was adorable, he threw everything in the cart.
They also got wiped, large boxes of diapers, pacifiers, bottles, baby detergent, lotion, powder, and necessities for Dennis.
In the end Dennis has bought at least 30 pairs of dresses, 50 pairs of shirts, another 50 pairs of pants, and what seemed like a billion socks, mittens, and accessories.
Dennis knew they would probably get more at the hospital, he already had 3 people gift him gifts.
One was Dana, Trinity, and McKay.
Their last stop was at a warehouse, they needed to baby proof their house.
By the time they got home Robby was too exhausted, but he pushed himself to decorate the nursery.
With Dennis occasionally helping, but most of the time Dennis was asleep or eating.
By the time Dennis finished his third nap the nursery was finished, it was furnished lovely, everything matched what Dennis wanted.
"Thank you Robby, this is perfect! This is everything I've always wanted"
Dennis got on his tippy toes to kiss Robby, Robby bent down slightly to kiss him back. Rubbing his nose onto Dennis cheek.
"I'm glad you actually considered my name suggestion"
"I thought about it, and I think if it comes from you, then it'll be wonderful"
Robby nuzzles into Dennis neck.
They stood back gazing at the nursery, that would soon have their baby in 2 months now.
They stared at the letters that hung above the bassinet, her official name.
Matilda.
8th Month.
Dennis wanted it to be over, his baby had dropped to his pelvis and while it give him comfort for his organs. He now had to deal with his baby literally sitting on his bladder.
He was out of breathe a lot of times, he would be walking from the kitchen to their room and he would be puffing by the time he got into bed.
His heartburn and acid reflux worsened, as if that wasn't worse it kept happening at the same time he had to use the bathroom.
It embarrassed him how many times he's had to use the bathroom in an hour, it was normal but gosh how much pee did he have in him?
His stomach was practically ready to detach from his body, it was so large maternity clothes don't fit anymore.
He sticks to wearing extra large clothes now, even Robby's hoodies don't fit, how much bigger could his baby get?!
His baby also decided his belly needed some permanent decorations because he stared getting stretch marks, at first he tried rubbing oil and lotion and shrugged it off.
But now it won't go away, and he knows once they don't leave, they're there forever.
They're blotchy and angry red, engraved in him.
———————————————
Dennis was on the living room floor with Robby, they had the day off so they decided to get to packing their hospital bags.
They decided to do the baby's bag first, Dennis had washed all of their baby's clothes and carefully folded them inside their baby's bag, along with a few diapers, swaddles, blankets, wipes, a baby hat, mittens, and their pediatrician information.
Dennis and Robby has bought a costume going home outfit, a white long sleeve onesie with in the middle saying "New Robinavitch
Dennis decided he wanted the baby to take Robby name, they already had a last name for her and if they decided to add Whitaker to her last name it would just be too long to write. So they decided on one last name.
"Robby, you should install the car seat, we have no idea if she'll want to come out early"
Dennis added, patting his belly as his baby kicked, his OB told him since his baby was already 8 pounds they could come at any moment.
Dennis almost punched Robby for his stupid genetics, he would've preferred a small little baby instead of a giant baby that would be half of his size.
Dennis zipped up their baby's bag before setting it aside, he grabbed his and started packing it.
He first added his folder filled with documents, the hospital asked for too much so he needed to be prepared.
He folded his loose gown, loose pants and a sweater to go home.
He then added comfortable boxers, pads, nursing pads, and more postpartum care.
He then added his bag filled with toothpaste, toothbrush, a hair brush, hair care, skincare, and deodorant.
He added in his portable charger, his laptop, and headphones.
He shoved in a pillow, blanket, socks, slippers, and a cloth because he knows he's going to have trouble showering.
Dennis tossed his back into Robby hands as he left to go put it at the back of their car.
At last it was Robby's turn, he only had a small backpack.
Robby just three in whatever, a few shirts, pants, boxers, his toiletry bag, his camera that he insists he will use, snacks, his blanket and pillow, and extra documents and keys.
They both sighed once they were finished.
"Wanna order something to eat?"
"Please Robby, I have no motivation to get up or even cook"
Robby threw his head back to laugh, taking out his phone to order. Dennis took over and was in charge on what to order.
9th Month.
Dennis was officially a week and 3 days overdue, he was having more frequent Braxton hicks which were probably contractions.
And he probably was having contractions, considering the fact a few days ago his mucus plug left his body in the bathroom.
Dennis was on maternity leave with Robby, they spent most of their time in bed. The only time Dennis had to get up was to pee.
His first contractions had start at 10:45PM.
He was washing his hands when it happened, it didn't hurt but it surprised him.
He immediately told Robby who started to time them, his next one happened at 11:55PM.
An hour after his first one, it wasn't painful but it felt weird. Dennis couldn't sleep, all he could think of was his contractions.
In less than an hour they started to pace up and get painful, finally Dennis told Robby they should go to the hospital.
Robby immediately got up, shoving his phone, wallet, and charger in his pockets before helping Dennis into slippers.
Dennis shoved his charger and wallet in his bag, along with his phone before he walked out with Robby.
On the way Dennis has more painful contractions, they were 30 minutes away from the hospital they chose.
They wanted to choose The Pitt but they weren't allowed, unless they didn't have time they had to go to a better hospital.
Once they arrived Robby signed both of them in before they were accompanied by their nurse who led them to their labor and delivery room, Robby left to get all three bags before getting Dennis hospital bed comfortable.
Dennis laid down, thinking he would only be in here for at least 2 days.
He was so wrong.
The contractions came faster now, but he didn't dilate fast. After almost being in the hospital for 5 hours he's only dilated 2 centimeters.
Dennis would alternate between the yoga ball and walking around, but walking was impossible.
With all the monitors and IVs attached to him trampled him, because of his condition they wanted him hooked up to more monitors just to be safe.
———————————————
They've been in the hospital for 24 hours now, Dennis had only dilated to 5 centimeters.
At first he wanted an unmedicated labor and birth, but now he was considering a epidural.
Dennis didn't even try to eat breakfast, he knew he would just throw it up.
For the next hours it was a battle between Dennis crying from pain, hitting Robby, and nurses poking and prodding him.
By the time Dennis got his epidural it was nighttime, it was the best feeling.
Although it hurt at first, the relief made it worth it.
He felt calmed, he was able to finally text all his friends updated without spelling everything incorrectly from his trembling hands.
———————————————
Dennis managed to sleep all night until the next day in the afternoon, by that time he's been in the hospital for almost 48 hours.
The epidural relief faded and the pain finally came back, he was 8 centimeters dilated, almost near the end!
It took all the way till 50 hours of staying in the hospital to finally be able to push.
Dennis cursed out relief, doctors and nurse gathered around.
Dennis held Robby's hand, squeezing it through every contraction.
What pushed Robby to the edge was when Dennis pushed without the nurse permission, he tore up badly making Dennis let out a gut wrenching scream.
The doctor told Dennis to continue pushing lightly with pauses in between to not tear up anymore, Dennis followed and followed their instructions.
Finally after almost an hour of pushing their baby girl was born, Robby explicitly asked they do not cover her body or head with the hospital items and use their own. That's what they did.
Robby immediately snapped pictures of their daughter on Dennis bare chest, she was covered in vernix and bodily fluids but Dennis could care less.
The nurse draped a blanket over her and her hat, she settled and started falling asleep.
Dennis felt like his life was completed, until he felt lightheaded. He knew feeling dizzy was normal, but this didn't feel normal.
Not until nurse shouted hemorrhaging, and then everything went dark.
When Dennis finally woke up again, Robby was laying in the chair, with their daughter on his chest.
"Dennis! Oh my gosh I thought I almost lost you"
"Hmm—what happened?"
Dennis grunted in pain, he tried sitting up but Robby pushed him back down.
"You hermorrhaged, you lost a lot of blood, but not enough to need a blood transfusion"
Dennis frowned, he kept staring at their daughter.
"Did you sign the birth certificate yet?"
"I did, her name is officially Matilda Fauna-Melrose Robinavitch"
Dennis awed at the name, Dennis wanted Fauna as her middle name, but Robby wanted Melrose. So they both decided on using both names, what a beautiful combination.
"Trinity, Jack, and Dana are coming. Is that okay with you?"
"That's more than fine, I can't wait for them to meet her"
Robby nodded, he handed Matilda to Dennis and helped him get her into her outfit with the name New Robinavitch.
Before they arrived Robby took a picture of Dennis holding Matilda, with her shirt, white mittens and socks, and a white beanie.
When they finally arrived Trinity was fussing over the baby, they didn't want anyone holding her yet so she watched Matilda stare at Trinity.
Dana was being protective of Dennis, asking how he's done and that it gets better.
Jack patted Robby on his shoulder.
"Never would've thought you would stop smoking, until now. Congratulations Robby, you a dad now"
Robby wiped his tears, smiling and kissing Dennis.
This is their new journey, it won't be perfect, but they'll try.
Matilda Fauna-Melrose Robinavitch.
