Asuka stared at the ceiling of her room. She didn’t know how early it was. It was probably before the sun rose.
The sun was something Asuka barely saw these days. Most of the time she was either training on The Wunder or she was inside Unit-02, which wasn’t the best place to get some natural light. It’s not like Asuka cared however, the sun was bright, annoying, and always made her skin feel uncomfortably warm.
The Wunder’s automatic light system hadn’t come on yet for the day so it was probably before even Misato was awake. Now that Asuka thought about it she wasn’t sure if Misato slept. Asuka rolled over on her side trying to fall back asleep but there was something that kept bugging her. She was cold, very cold, no matter how many times she adjusted her blanket she was still cold. Asuka contemplated what she should do for a moment before getting up from her bed. She walked over to the bed next to hers, the bed of the “Four eyed crony”, she stared at Mari sleeping.
Mari was something Asuka had seen all the time now. Mari was also bright, annoying and always got very touchy with the Second Child. That did make Asuka feel warm.
Mari was sleeping with her hair undone, glasses off, and her signature smug face. Even in sleep she was a pompous shit. But god was she cute. Asuka caught herself before she stared for too long and moved Mari ever so gently and moved next to her. Asuka was warm again.
Mari turned and wrapped her arms around Asuka before she could react, pulling her close.
“Oh, Princesses~ what put you in my arms tonight?” Mari sang as if this had happened before (it has).
“You’re warm” Asuka bluntly said.
“Am I really? Or do you feel warm with me?”
“It doesn’t matter”
Asuka buried her face into Mari’s chest and tried to sleep. She couldn’t. Neither could Mari.
“Hey you wanna see something?” Mari whispered suddenly as she sat up.
Asuka knew that at this point she probably wouldn’t go back to sleep so she just went along.
“Fine. Make this quick”
The two got up from the bed, Mari put her glasses on, the two put on their coats and Mari held Asuka’s hand, Asuka actually didn’t protest this time, and led her through the back half of The Wunder before they finally made it to the top of the air craft, which was landed, and the two sat on the right wing of the ship.
Mari excitedly pointed to the horizon where the sun was finally rising, though very slowly.
“It’s a sun rise…I’ve seen plenty of these before.” Asuka was preparing to leave back to the inside of the ship.
“Can’t you just appreciate the smaller things for a second and sit with me” Mari grabbed Asuka’s sleeve and smiled.
Asuka looked into Mari’s eyes and the sunrise. She felt warm again but not like the uncomfortable heat from the sun, the pleasant warmth like from Mari’s blankets. Maybe it was Mari.
For one moment maybe Asuka could like the sun.
