When Radon Maxwell, a quiet and kind-hearted wolf, moves into Apartment 117 of a small five-story building in downtown Seattle, he expects nothing more than a fresh start. What he finds instead is the Smiling Critters—a close-knit group of friends who live together on the fifth floor and quickly pull him into their daily lives.
As winter turns to spring, Radon becomes the emotional center of the group, unknowingly deepening the affections of Dogday, Catnap, Kickin Chicken, and Bubba Bubbaphant, all while believing their closeness is simply friendship. Between shared meals, late-night conversations, gym sessions, and quiet moments, the bonds between the Smiling Critters grow stronger—and more complicated.
But as summer approaches, the calm they’ve built is threatened when Dogday’s old nemesis, the wealthy red dragon Simon Smokes, arrives with his Nightmare Critters to challenge them in the Summer Games. With their home and unity at stake, the Smiling Critters must stand together, unaware that the greatest test of their bond is only just beginning.
