Work Text:

Getting a call from the school principal saying that his daughter got into a fight was not a call Shane had ever expected to get, he actually had to double check with the principal that he had called the right person. This wasn’t just Shane being cocky about Ilya’s and his good parenting, but never in his life did he expect Phoebe to get in a fight. Sure verbal fights maybe but a physical fight? Something was definitely up, this was very unlike her.

“Ilya!” Shane shouts from the kitchen once the phone hangs up.

“Yes?” Ilya responds from the living room.

“Put on some shoes. I just got a call from Phoebe’s principal, we need to defend her honor.” Shane tells him already putting on his own sneakers.

Ilya comes rushing into the kitchen and grabs the sneakers he left by the door earlier. “A call from the principal? What happened?” Ilya asks.

“Apparently something about her getting in a fight with another student.” Shane explains and grabs the keys to his car that were handed on the wall by the entrance.

“Our daughter got into a fight?” Ilya says shocked following Shane out the door.

“Apparently.”

“Ya no I don’t buy it, something is up.” Ilya tells him once they are both in the car.

“That’s what I was thinking.” Shane replies.

“Did the principal say anything about why they were fighting?”

“No, just that she punched another student.” Shane explained.

“Well she must have good reason.” Ilya says confidently.

“I guess we will see.”

The two men pull into the middle school parking a lot a few minutes later. They barge into the front office and are pointed in the direction of the principals office. When they walk in they see Phoebe sitting next to a boy that's probably double her size, he’s wearing a Montreal Voyagers jersey and has his mom and dad sitting behind him. This boy had an evident black eye and Phoebe, yikes Shane thought, Phoebe may have gotten one good hit on him, but if the bruised up face, bloody nose and cut cheek told Shane anything it's that this boy knew how to fight.

“Mr Hollander, Mr Rozanov please have a seat.” The principal, an older man probably in his late 60’s, gestures to the two seats behind Phoebe.

Both Shane and Ilya take a seat behind a very quietly angry looking Phoebe. It hurt Shane to see her like this, could they at least have given her some ice or something?

“Now that we have everyone here I’d like for our students to explain why they were fighting.” The principal says sternly.

Before Phoebe has a chance to speak the other boy starts his explanation, “ I told Phoebe I was a Voyagers fan and she said that her dad used to play for them but then he moved to the Centaurs and they were the better team. I told her that just because her dad stopped playing for the Voyagers doesn't mean they are a sucky team, and then she punched me!” The boy shouts.

Shane knew immediately that the boy's story was complete bs so he waited patiently for Phoebe to share the real story.

Finally Phoebe spoke up, “That’s not true!” She insisted. “Yes I did say my dad used to play for the voyageurs but moved to the centaurs, but then you said that Montreal was way better after they kicked the f-slur off the team, except you used the actual word!” Phoebe says angrily. “I punched you because when I asked what you had just said you called him it again!”

“That’s not true she’s lying!” The boy insists.

“I am not!” Phoebe shouts back at him.

“Children, children settle please.” The principal says finally.

“Sir, my son would never say such a thing.” The boy's mom says in a sickly sweet voice.

“Well since we have no way of knowing for sure who said what, I'll have to suspend the student who started the fight since technically the other student was just defending himself. ” The principal informs them.

Anger builds in Shane but Ilya is the first to burst.

“My daughter is no liar. She would not lie about the boy using slurs. It is not fair!” Ilya says loudly, his accent is thicker when he’s angry like this.

“Mr Rozanov, please settle down. Even if what she is saying was true, she did start the fight which is an automatic 3 day suspension.” The principal says calmly.

This time Shane’s the one to speak, “She was defending her family! Is it just okay now for your students to use homophobic slurs at your school?”

“Like I said Mr Hollander, she started the fight so really this is out of my hands, I just have to follow school rules.” The man tells him.

“Bullshit! We are leaving c’mon Phoebe.” Ilya says standing up and walking out of the office.

Shane and Phoebe stand up as well and he puts an arm around her as they follow Ilya out. They make it out to the parking lot and all get in the car to leave.

“I’m sorry.” Phoebe says quietly from the back seat.

“No, you have nothing to be sorry for Phoebe.” Ilya says confidently.

“Yes we appreciate you defending us, but fighting isn’t always the answer.” Shane tells her and wow Ilya is right he is boring.

“Interesting words coming from a hockey player.” Phoebe responds.

“She is right, the boy had it coming.” Ilya agrees.

Shane elbows Ilya who’s in the passenger seat next to him, “Ilya” he says through gritted teeth.

“What he did.” Ilya says.

Shane rolls his eyes, “Anyways, the point is we are proud of you for standing up for yourself, we aren’t mad at you, just next time maybe try not to get suspended.” Shane says.

“Yes, and your principal is asshole, we will get him fired.” Ilya adds on.

Shane hears a laugh come out of Phoebe.

When they get home Shane immediately grabs some ice for Phoebe to put on her face and sends Ilya to go get some medical supplies out of the cabinet. She's sitting on the counter of the breakfast bar and Shane was examining her face closely.

“You’re definitely going to be bruised up for a little bit but it could’ve been worse.” Shane tells her.

“Ya maybe not the smartest decision to punch a guy twice my size, but I stand by it. Also I did manage to give him a black eye so there's that.” Phoebe says wincing at the cold ice on her swollen cheek.

“Yes, a scar will look cool, and give you a good story for later.” Ilya says walking back into the kitchen. He uses some alcohol wipes to clean off the blood from Phoebe’s face, then carefully places a small strip of medical tape perpendicular to the cut on Phoebe’s cheek. “Okay you should be good.”

“Thanks.” Phoebe says. “You know the funniest part was that the boy was wearing a Hayden Pike jersey.”

Shane and Ilya promptly burst out laughing from this statement.

“ Man, I can’t wait to call Hayden and tell him about this.” Shane said happily.

“Oh yes, make sure you include the part about our daughter beating up his #1 fan.” Ilya says after.

“Trust me, I will.” Shane replies, already grabbing his phone and pulling up Hayden’s contact.

Notes:

I know this one is random but I thought it would be funny so I wrote it real quick, thats all.

*Also I like to imagine Hayden posting a picture in his Insta after the phone call saying something about how much he loved his dear friend Shane Hollander.
