Third-Party Memories

Summary:

Zane and Nya watch the sunrise and think about the past.

Ninjago 15th Anniversary Rewatch: Season 1 (Rise of the Snakes)

Notes:

I couldn't think of a title for this so I went with my sibling's suggestion 👍

Update: I have added to the title (original one was just 'Memories')

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Zane stood just inside of the main cabin of the Bounty, gazing out at the rocky formations surrounding where they'd chosen to rest the ship the previous night.

In the distance, he could see the sun beginning to rise. Waves of colour were soon to break up the dark sky. Although he didn't have a great view of them right now, he imagined that the natural rock formations they had landed close to gave it an even more beautiful look.

However, as he turned to make his way down and check, he spotted another person on the deck. Staring at the sunrise, just as he intended to do.

Zane debated returning inside and going back to sleep, but he didn't know if they'd come back to this location, and he did not want to miss the supposedly-amazing sunrise.

At the same time, he did not want to stay where he was, as he was certain it would be a more beautiful view if he watched it from the deck, with the rocks in his field of vision.

He stepped down, making up his mind, and moved closer to the person it seemed he would be sharing the deck with. He gave a pleasant greeting as he approached.

“Hello, Nya.”

Nya jolted. Something slipped from her fingers, but she grabbed it before it could go far from her. “Oh! Hi, Zane.”

Zane frowned slightly. He had not meant to surprise her. He must work on that. “My apologies for startling you.”

“It's fine,” Nya said, absent-mindedly running her fingers over the object in her hands. “What are you doing awake this early?”

“I wished to see the sunrise. The people in the village I used to live in spoke highly of the view found in this area.”

Nya nodded. “Yeah, I've heard that as well. Wu said my parents loved this place. I didn't wanna miss it.”

Zane knew that he and Nya were in some ways similar, with the lack of memory of their parents being the most obvious reason.

He did not, however, know what he should say to her about this.

He ended up nodding in what he hoped was a sincere way. “I see.”

He suddenly wished one of the others were here. They were all much better at emotion than he was.

However, he did not dwell on this train of thought long, as he heard Nya let out a gasp beside him.

The sun had begun making its appearance.

The sky was alight with watercolour.

He and Nya stood in silence (aside from the tapping of feet on the deck or the fidgeting of hands against the railing) as they both stared at the scenery.

After the sun had risen, Zane continued to gaze at where the sunrise had been. He knew that he would have to move soon, as Master Wu would expect them to begin training, but the sky had transfixed him.

Perhaps luckily, though, it seemed Nya had the same thought about the time. She straightened up and tapped Zane on the shoulder to draw his attention.

“Well, it's been fun, but I've got to go work on this some more.” She gestured to the object that she had been tinkering with while viewing the sunset.

Zane stared at it. He could now see that it was an object that resembled a camera. However, with Nya, you could never be too sure.

He tilted his head. “What are you making?”

“Oh, this? It's an old family camera. I'm modifying it.” Nya pushed a few buttons to demonstrate.

Nothing happened.

Zane continued staring. Nya seemed to pick up on his interest in it, and, it seemed, was keen to discuss.

“We don't have any pictures,” she elaborated, still messing with it. “This thing's not exactly my field of expertise, but I really think we should have something like it. Memories are important.”

Zane nodded as Nya continued speaking. There was some emotion within him. He wasn't sure what it was. But he knew it agreed with Nya.

Memories were extremely important.

Nya suddenly seemed to realize something, and stopped her ramble about the inner mechanisms of the device. “-oh! Sorry, Zane. I didn't think about how that might sound.”

“I was not upset,” Zane said, shaking his head. “You were merely stating a fact. Memories are extremely important.”

He gazed at the camera in Nya's hands once more.

She would get it working soon. Zane knew she would. Then they all would always be able to recall their adventures together.

“I agree that a camera would be a good addition.”

He wondered if, somewhere, there was even a single photo of him and his parents.

Notes:

Do you think Nya has pictures of her parents or nah

Anyways I love Nya-Zane parallels
