Summary
Will’s father, a nobleman in 1810, is a compulsive gambler who wagers everything he owns and loses it all. In a desperate attempt to recover what he has lost, he stakes the last thing he has left: his son, William.
Unfortunately, he loses him as well, along with the remainder of his fortune. As he leaves the gambling house, another man arrives, one willing to wager everything in order to reclaim what Will’s father has lost and set things right. Michael Wheeler wins the bet and recovers Will, fully intending to return him to his father.
But at that very moment, a gunshot is heard.
Will’s father has taken his own life. Unaware of Michael’s wager, he dies without ever knowing that his son had been won back. Now, Will is legally bound to Michael.
