Chapter 1: Two Strangers

Chapter Text

Mira was dying.

At least, that's what she thought was happening.

Everything hurt, especially her throat. Her vision was blurry, and she couldn't seem to make much more than a few feeble choking noises.

How had this even happened? One moment she had been catching her breath after finishing off a couple of demons, and the next there was a stranger in front of her, pulling a strange and glowing thread-thing from her neck that dissolved as it  wound around their hand. The more they pulled out, the worse Mira felt.

She was sure this would be the end of her. Alone in an alleyway with a complete stranger and no way to call for help. What would this mean for Hunter/x? Who would protect the Honmoon if they disbanded? She wouldn't even get to say goodbye to her girls...

BOOM

The stranger was slammed into a wall by some sort of shockwave, and Mira vaguely registered that someone had stepped around the corner. There was some very angry shouting in a language she didn't recognize, and lots of bright light. Then the newcomer shoved the stranger backwards into something swirly and blue.

The next thing Mira knew, someone who she presumed to be her rescuer was knelt in front of her with a hand hovering just above her throat. The Honmoon pulsed faintly beneath the two of them, and little threads of it's light drifted up to her throat, gently guided by the person's hand.

"Wha... Huh..?" She muttered, and they smiled faintly. "Hey. How are you feeling?" Their voice was soft and reassuring. That, and something about the way the Honmoon seemed so willing to interact with them, made her relax a bit.

"Fine- ughh.." She tried to push herself up (When had she hit the ground?) but winced and fell back down as the world immediately started to spin around her. "Yeah, you might want to take it easy for a bit. Do you have somewhere to go? Do I like, need to call you an Uber or something?" "No, it's alright." Mira sighed. "I can just call my girls to come pick me up." They nodded. "Okay. Do you... Uh, do you want to try and move somewhere a little safer than a dark alleyway?"

Her rescuer helped her up (They were surprisingly strong for how short they seemed) and lead her over to a small stone wall by the side of the road. Now that they weren't so shrouded in shadows Mira realized how young they looked. The person couldn't have been more than 16. They had light brown eyes and curly, honey brown hair pulled back into a messy ponytail. Their grey striped T-shirt, and long baggy shorts reminded her of something Zoe might wear.

"So... What's your name?" They blinked a little and looked up. "Amber." "Cool." Mira smiled. "I'm Mira."

"Yeah." Amber smiled back. "Nice to meet you Mira."

They sat in comfortable silence for a while while Mira tried to recover from whatever that was, and Amber just looked up at the sky.

...

"Hey... what is this..?" Amber asked. They gently brushed the stone next to them, causing the Honmoon to ripple a little. Mira blinked in shock. "You can see it?" Now that she thought of it, she they had done something with it earlier to heal(?) her. They shrugged. "Yeah, but I don't know what it is. I'd like to."

She wasn't quite sure what to tell them. One the one hand, they were a complete stranger, and likely a kid. On the Other hand, they had saved her life, and the Honmoon itself didn't seem to have a problem with them. Plus, they were probably just a kid...

"It's a barrier. Meant to protect this world from the demon world. It's Called the Honmoon." Amber tilted their head at her with a weird look in their eyes. Like they were looking at her, and not at her at the same time somehow, and there was a strange sort of reflectiveness in their eyes that She couldn't quite place. Then it was gone. "Huh. I've never heard of that before." Mira chuckled. "It's not exactly common knowledge." They shrugged. "Fair enough. Can you.. tell me more about demons?"

After another few minutes, a sleek black car pulled up beside them, and Rumi got out of the passengers side. (Followed closely by Zoey from the drivers seat) "Mira! Are you okay?" Rumi asked as she made her way over. "Yeah, I'm fine. Promise." Mira nodded to the two of them, then turned to the teen at her side.

"Zoey, Rumi, this is Amber. She.." She looked at them. "She?" Amber shrugged. "She, they, either one is fine." Mira nodded again. "She helped me out." (Mira had elected not to mention the what, how, and why of it all just yet. She still needed time to figure that out for herself)

"Well, it's nice to meet you Amber." Rumi, ever the diplomat, was the first to respond, with Zoey chiming in shortly after. "Yeah, nice to meet you. Thanks for helping Mira." Amber just smiled. "Nice to meet you too."

On the car ride back to the penthouse (Mira was feeling well enough to make it to the car on her own, than god) she found herself stuck in a loop of thoughts about Amber. How old were they to be taking on such danger by themselves? How could they see the Honmoon? Why was it so willing to interact with them? Who was the person that attacked her, and why did she get the impression that Amber knew them? Why on earth was a teenager so strong? And did Mira really see something in their eyes, or was she just imagining it...?
