Chapter 1: Starting with Dad

Chapter Text

It was the morning, and Kai was standing in front of the bathroom mirror fixing up his hair. But he seemed to be nervous about something. He was nervous, because he was meeting up with his dad for brunch. He was finally going to tell his father that he was dating, and to tell him that he was gay too. But he was going to say the gay part first. He didn’t want to hide it from his parents anymore. So, he thought telling just one would be easier, but he couldn’t help the nerves.

“Come on, Kai. You’re the master of fire..” Kai spoke to himself in front of the mirror.

“You really need to tell yourself that?” Cole teased as he steps into the bathroom with an amused look on his face. Kai jumped a little at the sudden voice then he rolled his eyes playfully as he turned around to face him.

“Well.. No.. It’s just.. It’s nothing” Kai couldn’t find the words. “I’m just meeting up with my dad for breakfast or brunch or something”

“Why so nervous? You guys have known each other for like a year now” Cole was confused why Kai was acting all nervous.

“Is everything alright, Kai?” Cole asked him another question, but he was concern now. Kai sighed a little. He couldn’t hide things from his boyfriend.

“I’m telling my dad that I am gay” Kai said flat out to him. He watched Cole’s features soften.

Cole steps over to him and takes his hands into his own. He smiled at him.

“Well, I guess I don’t blame you for being nervous” Cole told him. Kai smiled a little in return as he held his hands.

“Yeah.. I just don’t know how he will react. I know we have known each other for a while now..” Kai shrugged his shoulders. “But.. Yeah..” He sighed.

“Do you want me to come? For support of course” Cole suggested with a smile still on his face. Kai was quiet for a moment then he shakes his head.

“No. I need to do this on my own” Kai told him seriously, but he smiled again at him “But thanks”

Cole nodded his head in understanding.

“I get it. I was nervous too about telling my dad. Like really nervous, but it turned out good. Your dad is a great guy. I’m sure it’s going to be fine. I’ve never seen the man angry or mad. Not once. Are you sure you guys are related?” Cole teased him about the last part. Kai just stared at him then he laughed softly.

“Yeah yeah” Kai responded as he rolled his eyes playfully. “I better get going now. Don’t want to be late”

Cole smiled at him then he kissed his cheek.

“It’s my turn to do the groceries today. Anything you want?” Cole asked him.

“Uhhh, oh. If they have any of those flaming hot chips, grab me those. They have been out of stock for a while now” Kai kissed Cole’s cheek in return then he quickly left to go meet up with his dad.

It didn’t take Kai too long to get to the cafe. Only a ten minute walk from the monastery. He had a look around to see where his father was then he spots him sitting at a two seated table. Ray noticed him and waved at him. Kai smiled as he made his way towards him and takes a seat on the empty seat.

“Kai! It’s great to see you! It has been a while” Ray smiled at him.

“Yeah, I guess it has, sort of. I did see you three days ago” Kai just chuckled at him.

“That is still a while. Anyway, how have you been?” Ray asked his only son.

“Not too bad. Just the same old stuff” Kai shrugged his shoulders “But Jay did get a new video game yesterday. He has been glued to the screen for hours”

“That boy sure loves his videos games. Anyway, you said there was a reason why you asked to meet up? What is it?” Ray stated to him.

“Oh.. Yeah. Well” Kai rubs the back of his neck. He wasn’t sure how to start this.

“Oh, let me guess. Is it about that Skylor girl? Have you finally asked her out?” Ray grinned at his son. Kai just smiled slightly.

“Uhh, no. I told you. We are just good friends. That’s all” Kai told him.

“Aww, come on son! Don’t gotta lie to me. There is defiantly something going on between the both of you” Ray told him with a smile on his face.

“No. Really dad. There isn’t going on between us” Kai tried to tell him more seriously.

“Then what is it?” Ray raised a brow. Kai didn’t have a chance to respond, because a waitress arrived at the table.

“Hey there! My name is Jill. Have you had time to decide what to order?” Jill smiled at the two. She was holding a pencil and notepad to take down their order.

“Oh. Sorry. We haven’t checked the menu yet” Ray looked at Jill. Jill just nodded her head.

“Okay. That’s fine. Just call me over when you guys are ready” Jill told them with a smile on her face again then she left.

“Anyway. What were you saying, son?” Ray looked back at Kai.

“Right.. Uh.. You see. There’s just something you don’t know about me. I wasn’t sure how to tell you.. I guess I’m just not sure how you will react.. but..” Kai was having trouble saying it. Why was it so hard? Ray noticed this, his face softens and smiled at him.

“I’m sure whatever it is. I will support you” Ray told him kindly. Hoping to ease Kai.

Kai relaxed a little as he stared at his father for a few seconds then he finally said it.

“Dad… I’m gay”
