Summary
A dangerous note has entered Valencina's voice, the same one Lucio hears every day. The very first lesson Lucio has ever learned has been to fear it. He recognizes it delirious, he recognizes it drugged; the sound of it jolts him from sleep better than any alarm. “You got a problem, Textbook? Going to stay here to grovel to the rats in this place?” She laughs, low and cruel. Her neck bends to regard him; her eye, wide and gleaming with mania, looms over him. ”Who's your master here: me, or them?”
Lucio swallows. Valencina’s eye sees all. To be the sole recipient of her attention is to be laid bare. He thinks, not for the first time, of jabbing his thumb through to the soft flesh inside. Eyeballs are so fragile, so delicate. It would tear out under his fingers like an egg, helpless to his single-minded violence.
How did Yoshihide do it, all those years ago? To turn her blade on her own mother?
“...You, Master,” he says, dipping his head in acquiescence. “I apologize.”
A sudden and inexplicable hysteria has struck Valencina. Provoked by some bizarre vision of death, she severs the threads between her and the House of Spiders.
And, of course, she takes Lucio with her.
