Blood hits the pavement

Two shadows holster their guns

Night exhales softly

 

One learns loss by war

Bought and sold and bought again

No grief left unfelt

 

One learns loss through life

A child, a soldier, a grave

With no rage unearned

 

Eyes hidden in masks

Underneath, matching bruises

Earned together, now




Love, practiced like aim

Finger steady on the heart

Do not hesitate

 

Our heroes draw lines

Living in shadows’ colors

Hands already stained

 

Who watches our backs?

Only we have each other.

This has always worked.
