Nefarious Retake! How to Fall for a Supervillain

Summary:

Crow is the apex supervillain of Macro City, dealing in the traditional realm of kidnapping Princesses. His ultimate goal? To take over the world and have all kingdoms at his unrelenting mercy. However, things start to go ary as an unexpected guest infiltrates Crow's fleet in pursuit of riches. She is the Cunning Night-Brigand, a prolific thief with a drive for only the most valuable treasures, feared throughout Macro City for her effortless ability to slip in and out of homes like a phantom whilst purloining their goods.

Instead of kicking her to the curb, Crow decides to give her a place among his ranks - he ought to keep a close eye on his competition after all - yet as time passes, missions fly by, and Crow advances ever closer to his goal, things begin to unfold in a peculiar and unexpected way. Just who is the enigmatic Bel, and what are her true motivations? Will she be the villain's salvation, or his damnation?

Chapter 1: Foreword

The following is a creative reimagining of the world and characters of Nefarious, reframed and repaced to accommodate a slower, more interpersonal narrative, as well as introduce new characters and themes. Though it is probably not necessary, here are a few things to keep in mind before you begin reading.

First of all, all canon characters in this story have been modified in some fashion - be it through design, personality or lore - and are considered entirely separate to their original counterparts. The Crow depicted in this fic is not to be thought of as the same Crow that appears in the game or the comic. They are fundamentally different people from different ‘iterations’ of the series. This also applies to canon locations, story beats, and lore in general. So if something seems different to how it is canonically interpreted, there’s a good chance that’s on purpose. This also means that some minor characters have been written out or replaced by others in order to accommodate significant lore changes.

Secondly, this continuity loosely follows the plotline of - and takes creative cues almost exclusively from - the game. Next to nothing from external material was taken into consideration with this retake, with exactly one exception that will become apparent once you read ‘Intermission (Four Days Ago)’’. This means that continuity introduced within the confines of the comic, such as Crow’s extended family, any given character’s backstory, and the Condor are to be disregarded. None of it applies here.

Lastly, it should be said that this project was made with nothing but love, passion and endearment toward the original work. This retake is simply me reframing everything with character themes and tropes more relevant to me. This isn’t me attempting to one-up anybody or claim that I can write a story better, and I do not consider my work to be in any way a replacement for the official material. I wholeheartedly encourage supporting the original project in every capacity.
