Sua was having a bad day.
That was what she had been thinking since she got that text message from her older sister.
’Hey Sua!!! Sorry, but I had to go and see Nigeh!’ With a teary emoji after.
In other words: “I won’t come until very, very late”
She wandered around the school halls aimlessly, thinking what she could do while her sister was out.
The school was mostly empty, with only a few people talking, probably planning about plans they’ll do after school.
Well, except one.
A pink haired girl was sitting hunched over while looking at a magazine whose title Sua wasn’t capable of reading from where she was standing, but she was however able to see the shape of what seemed like a big eyed alien. The girl’s hair fell in messy and short curls over her face due to her posture, and her eyes were such a radiant yellow she might have mistaken them for jewelry if it weren’t for the thick and round glasses making them look somewhat foggy.
The thing that made her stop her wandering was the bright hair color the girl possessed. But the thing that made her stop was the uncomfortable looks she was giving a blonde and curly haired guy.
Guy, who by the way, was staring at her like she was some sort of show.
And Sua doesn’t know why she did it, considering she was usually indifferent to the strangers around her.
But the moment the boy moved his chair back and stood up, eyes still fixated on the girl, she entered the classroom with something almost similar to hurry.
“You’re here”, she exclaimed, “I thought you had already left school”
She really hoped the lack of name didn’t make her act less believable as she quickly looked at the guy through the corner of her eye, who now looked taken back. She also hoped he didn’t notice the awkward tone that seeped through her voice.
The girl nodded, although she seemed surprised, but Sua couldn’t quite tell with the way the light reflected on her glasses, making it almost impossible to see her eyes.
“I thought we would meet up later, sorry”, the girl ducked her head, grabbed her magazines and quickly left the classroom with Sua.
And the moment they were out of the guy’s line of vision, she was enveloped in one of the tightest hugs Sua had ever experienced.
“Thank you! Thank you so much!”, half-whispered half-yelled the girl, “That guy was so creepy! He— Oh, I’m Mizi, by the way!”
“No problem, I’m Sua”, she responded, even though it was a little hard considering the strength Mizi was hugging her with, “…May I ask what the magazine’s about…?”
She could feel that asking that was a bad decision, but the way Mizi’s eyes shined the moment the words left her mouth made it worth it.
“Oh well, it’s about the occult! Did you know Obama himself has already been on Mars? I was reading about the complete story of Plan Pegasus— You don’t believe that, right?”,Mizi inquired, stopping her rambling.
She thought she did a good job at hiding it, or maybe Mizi was just that perceptive.
“…I don’t really believe in the occult, I’m more into spirits, you know?”
“…Really?”
“Yeah, my sister’s a medium”
“You know what, we should bet”
She looked at the pink haired girl with raised eyebrows, and either Sua was seeing things or Mizi was blushing.
“You go to a place with aliens, I go to a place with ‘ghosts’”, she didn’t miss the way Mizi said ghosts,“And if one of us finds one of those, she has to take the other for dinner”
Okay, the bet’s objective probably wasn’t related to proving the existence of aliens. But
“Where do I have to go?”
Sua was starting to regret this.
“Where do I have to go to see the UFOs?”,she held the phone close to her as she stepped through the abandoned halls of the hospital.
“Nagi Hospital is one of the most famous places for looking for UFOs! It is said that they’ll abduct you if you call them from the roof!”
“…You haven’t seen a UFO in real life, have you?”
“Wherever I’ve seen one before or not isn’t important! The important stuff is the base of the theory!
“How is it going over there, though?”
“I have arrived at the tunnel”, gosh Mizi wished her legs weren’t trembling from fear.
“By the way, this was one of the most popular places on the internet where people saw spirits”
“…On the internet? Have you never seen a spirit?”
“What? No”
“How can you believe in spirits if you have never seen one?”
“Why is it weird? I’ve already told you, my sister’s a medium, she was the on that raised me”
“…Really?”
“Yeah, my… family was always a bit weird. When I was a child, whenever I went out, I had to do some sort of spell with my hands. That included whenever I went to school. The other kids laughed at me, but if I didn’t do it my sister would get mad. But I think the worst part was when my closest friend started to get bothered by the other kids because of it too.
And I think I told my sister some… unnecessary things
We didn’t make up until a little while ago, and I don’t do that spell anymore.
But seeing others making fun of my family, it gets me really mad.
I have never seen an actual spirit, but it was my sister who raised me alone, and I love her. So even if I haven’t seen a spirit, I still believe in her. That’s why I believe in spirits.”
Mizi blinked.
“And you? Why do you believe in aliens?”
“Well… I really don’t have a big reason like you do… It’s just something I like you kno—”
The wind changed directions.
The temperature lowered.
A woman was standing in front of her.
She had messy white hair covering her face, a sobok that seemed to fade into the air in small tendrils. Her hair and clothing were moving unnaturally, almost as if they were blending together.
Mizi stopped breathing.
“A GHOST! THEY ARE REA—”
The call ended.
“Shit!”,Sua whispered, grabbing the phone anxiously, “Mizi, wait, I’ll go right now!”
But when she turned around, she didn’t see the hall. She saw three figures.
They didn’t resemble a human, no. She would compare them more to big insects rather than humans.
The lights flickered.
She turned around.
Tried to run.
But before she could reach the door, she blacked out as she felt her head being hit.
