Thankfully, kind reader, Charlie was not yet familiar with Raphael's subdued style of body language, and thus could not hear the screams he was emitting with his eyebrows.
Isabelle, what are you doing? They said. First you reveal the Clan to him, and now the best lie you can think of is that my reason for staying in the jewelry business is my otherworldly attachment to a clam?? Why don't you just kill me with hammers????
Wow, Charlie thought, I've never seen a bodyguard look so bored.
Charlie tactfully asked, "so, how does that work?"
"Well," Raphael replied, his eyebrows now mostly screaming things like AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA and OUUGHHHHHHHHHHH, "she sits in an aquarium and keeps me company while I make jewelry." As he said this, he tried to spontaneously develop telepathy to ask Maia if clams ate or had eyes or what. It didn't work, per se, but Maia could still sense that he needed her help because they were kindred souls with a beautiful connection that understood each other intrinsecally and all of that. And also because she loved to infodump. So she said the first clam fact that came to her mind, which was:
"Did you know that clams can get leukemia?"
Heavy silence followed.
"I worry about that every day," Raphael offered, drily.
