“Was it worth it, do you wager?” Bruno asks wryly, eyes tracing the thin edge where the moonlight cuts across Mista’s mid-thigh, hundreds of curly hairs camouflaging at least a dozen flaky scars underneath. It’s an early interruption. A quarter past five, the fleeting fragment of the hour where Mista’s gun is stowed away, meaning there is nothing to impede his focus as she draws his attention. “Abandoning whatever life you led before to spend all of your time watching nothing over my shoulder? Any regrets?”
“Working for you, or the circumstances?” Mista kicks back against the wall, staging a performance of taking his chin between index and thumb, gazing off into the distance at the curtains above her head. Deceptively contemplative, humming idly to the tune of a bygone conclusion. “Neither. I don’t regret a thing.”
