Chapter 1: Dragons Keep Secrets

Chapter Text

In the stories, the revolutionaries are dragonets. Starry-eyed young who realise things could be different.

Resin was in her mid twenties, secretly a murder, and the sister to one of the Queen’s favorite guards.

In short, not the recipe for a dragon who would overthrow her queen.

But she was idyllic. At least she had that.

Resin didn’t overthrow any governments when she was seven. She wasted all her time being terrible.

Because Resin, she was very talented at reading people. Not so much as other Dragons she’d meet in the future, of course, not nearly as much.

But the set of a dragon’s shoulders or the droop of their wings can tell you a lot about a dragon, what they are feeling in the moment. What they are carrying.

And Resin’s mother kept secrets.

She wanted to know those secrets.

Resin could have spent her time in academic pursuits. Or she could set herself to a career. Being a well off family, they could afford to put her to whatever she liked.

They could afford to keep her away from the war, at least.

And that was another thing. Child revolutionaries in stories don’t overthrow in the middle of a war. By then the wars are over. They start a whole new one to get rid of the dictator and then everything is fine.

But war was raging that wasn’t even really the business of SkyWings so it wouldn’t be the right time even if she was a child revolutionary.

The dragonets whose job it is to end the war, it shouldn’t be their problem either.

Resin’s mother, she kept secrets.

Resin liked to read dragons, it felt almost like it could be displayed on their scales.

Resin wasn’t innocent either, she worked for the queen. Resin knew a lot about how to tell a dragon’s thoughts

Before she worked for Scarlet, resin killed her mother.

It wasn't her fault…

Or so she liked to say.

But she never told anyone.

Matricide is the worst crime. She wasn’t a princess, the murder didn’t make her a queen. All she did was kill her mother, over a secret.

Resin kept her own secrets, so as to atone.
