Work Text:
Link yawned as he stirred from his sleep. His eyes glanced at the blue early morning sky, hints of gold, scarlet, and indigo peaking at the horizon. Years of farm work and travel had conditioned him to wake with the sun. His beloved princess however rose with her alarm which wasn't set to go off for another few hours. He would get up and make breakfast but like most mornings he woke up with Zelda laying directly on top of him. He smiled as he looked at her sleeping face. Her long brown hair ruffled from sleep. He always thought she looked the most beautiful when she'd just woken up. Her poise was replaced by sleepy grumbles and bedhead. She wasn't the queen of Hyrule in these moments, she was just Zelda. He loved his queen but Zelda was who truly held his heart.
He pressed his face against her hair, despite being human his time as a wolf left him with sharper senses. He could still smell the scent of her lilac and mint shampoo mixing with her lavender soap, as well as something that was uniquely her. He pulled her closer to place a kiss on her forehead. “I love you.” He whispered softly then smiled when he heard a grumble.
“Itsearly.” She huffed in his chest as she snuggled even more against him, “lemme sleep.”
Link bit his lip as one of the most well respected, powerful and well spoken queens in Hyrule muttered half asleep complaints with a little bit drool on the side of her mouth. How are you this damn cute?! He thought as he hugged her tighter against him. He snorted as she buried her face in his neck. He closed his eyes just listening to her slow even breaths. I mean she does have an alarm, and it's not like I'm going to be able to get up anyways. He gave her one last kiss on the head before he let himself drift back off to sleep.

Zelda yawned as she woke, cursing her alarm. She stretched as she sat up only to hear an oof noise below her. She rubbed her eyes as she looked down at her husband whom she was currently sitting on. “Good morning.”
“Hi.” He groaned slightly, “Darlin. You're on my ribcage.”
“Oh.” She scooted down so she'd be sitting on his lap. She smirked, “Better?”
Link grinned, “You wanna play games, you're gonna lose.”
“hmmm I really don't think I wILLL” She yelped as Link pulled her tighter to his chest with one arm and flipped them over with the other. He gave her a cocky smile as he laid on top of her, his arms folded underneath his head.
“Told ya.”
Zelda rolled her eyes, “You're absolutely ridiculous.”
“And you married me anyways.” He gave her a chaste kiss. “I love you.”
“I love you too.”
“So what's on the docket today, boss?” He asked as he rolled off her.
“Ashei, wants you to come by and help run guard drills. Shad has a list we need to go over before the holidays. Including a few meetings with dignitaries. Auru found a few construction companies that I'm interested in hiring to help repair and reinforcement some buildings in Castle Town and he's been planning free meals for the poor over the holidays with the church.”
“Sounds like a full day. You sure you got the energy for all that darlin?” He asked gently, “You've been gettin real tired lately. I don't want you to over extend yourself.”
“A queen’s job is -”
“Never done. I know. But I'm worried about ya. Your health is important.” He kissed her knuckles as he gave her his best puppy eyes.
“Love, the holidays are only a week away, then we have a whole two weeks off. I'll be fine.” She reassured, “In a few days we'll leave for Ordon and I can rest every day.”
“Mmmhmm.”
“Mmmhmm what?” She huffed slightly.
“Nothin Darlin.”
“Don't ‘nothing darling’ me. Out with it.”
“How much are you going to over extend yourself til then to get everything done before we take a break?”
She grumbled, “I’m perfectly capable of relaxing when I want to.”
He gave her a wolfish grin as he kissed her neck, “I certainly know your favorite way to relax~”
“Yes you do, but if we start that then we'll be late and it will take me even longer to finish everything we need to do before we leave.”
“boo.”
Zelda snorted, “You'll get your treat later, wolfie.” She patted him on the cheek, “Now be a good boy and let's start our day.”
“Yes Ma'am.”
“Again.” Ashei ordered as the guard picked himself up off the ground.
Link stood, waiting for the trainee to get into position. He respected Ashei, and was deeply grateful she'd taken over training the knights. However he couldn't help but feel a bit bad when she had him spar with them, especially the new recruits. Let's see if he makes it past a minute this time.
The young guard growled as he charged, swinging full force. Link side stepped and watched him run face first into the topiaries. Thank the goddesses that's a wooden sword. I think the groundskeeper’d kill me, ashei and half the recruits if we managed to kill a third one. I still don't know how that one idiot managed to set it on fire during archery training.
“Again.” Ashei responded as the guard pulled himself out of the bush.
The young man seethed as he picked up the wooden sword. “You stupid piece of shit! Stay still!” He once again threw his whole weight behind his swing. Link just shrugged. He parried the attack easily, then swiped at his feet once again knocking him flat on his ass. The young guard yanked himself back up, “Will you stop tripping me?!” He turned to Ashei as he fumed, “The hell is the point of this?! He's not even actually fighting me!”
“And why do you think that is?” Ashei asked pointedly.
“He's a coward!”
Ashei walked toward the young recruit like a tiger staring down its next meal. “Because you're not worth the energy. Your attacks are slow, your stances are off and you're clearly too angry to actually think. You're lucky these are wooden swords and the prince is nice. Now are you ready to put your ego aside and learn or do you want to keep falling into the bushes?”
The recruit huffed as he pulled himself up, then bowed his head, “I'm sorry. I'm ready to learn.”
Ashei smiled, patting him on the shoulder, “Alright everyone, fifteen minute break.” She waited for the recruits to disperse then turned to Link. “Nice work.”
“Why exactly do I always have to fight the cocky little shitheads?” He sighed, “I know the point is that it's not a fair fight but you're the sergeant.”
“Yes and you're the general.”
“Technically, yes but that's more cause of the whole Prince consort thing.” He dismissed, “I just feel bad.”
“That's why.” She said simply.
“Explain?”
“You don't train them every day. You help but you have other duties to attend to. I deal with them every day. Do you know how many grating cocksure stupid wanna-be heroes sign up to be knights?! A lot. If I was sparing with them they'd end up in the infirmary not the topiaries. I know you won't hurt them. You're used to dealing with annoying children.”
“They're teenagers.”
Ashei waved her hand, “same thing.”
“I’ll let Shad know you're not the maternal type.”
“Bold of you to assume he doesn't already know that.” She smirked, “Speaking of. How's Zelda doing?”
Link pressed his palm against his eye then dragged it down his face, “Stubborn as always. She's been gettin tired real quick lately.”
“The chronic workaholic who constantly falls asleep at her desk is getting tired more quickly....wow.” She said dryly.
“Okay well that's her normal tired, this is different tired.”
“If you're really that concerned, see if you can get her to the royal physician.”
“Golden goddesses above, it's easier wranglin an ornery goat than gettin that woman to admit she's sick enough to need a doctor. Especially if it's a cold. Last time she had a cold I had to lay on top of her to keep her from tryin to get to her study.”
“pffffffffffffft.” Ashei snickered, “I mean you already carry her to bed most nights.”
“mmmhmm.” Link crossed his arms, “Like I haven't seen you princess carry Shad to your room.”
“Alright then your ‘grace’, I have a question for you then?”
“What?”
She grabbed a sparing sword, “Think you can avoid getting sent to the infirmary?”
“Only if you don't mind takin the heat from the groundskeeper when you end up in the topiaries.” He grinned as he picked up his own.
Zelda nodded along with the visiting dignitaries, glancing at Shad who was taking notes and would let her know if something they said was important or inflammatory. She cared about all her people, regardless of species, however listening to Gorons explain flavor differences in different types of sedimentary rocks was a droll even for her. It didn't help that despite only being half way through the day she felt exhausted. Uh I just want to be in my bedroom with my husband. Drinking hot cocoa while watching the snow fall. I still need to figure out what to get him for Hylia's light. He's so hard to shop for. He never wanted much before he became a prince let alone now. Maybe a few picture frames for some of the trunk full of drawings the children from Ordon have given him over the years? Or some sort of folder for them? ugh why am I getting a headache?
“Your Highness?” One of the Goron's asked gently.
“Oh I'm sorry. Could you repeat that?”
“I was wondering if you would be interested in visiting our hot springs? We have a few in Kakariko but the best ones are by death mountain.”
“That would actually be wonderful. I'll consider adding it when we break again in spring. I know my husband has spoken quite highly of them when he was there.”
“He’s quite a warrior! Not many Hylians can wrestle Gorons, let alone win.”
“He is remarkable.” She smiled then glanced at Shad who nodded. “Well it was an absolute delight meeting with you Gor Coron and I do hope you enjoy the rest of your stay here at the palace.” She stood exiting the room with Shad following after. She yawned, covering her mouth with a gloved hand. Why am I so tired?? I slept a full seven hours- wait what's that smell? She froze, as she sniffed, Ugh , that smells absolutely delicious. Without a second thought she followed it carefully opening rooms trying to figure out where exactly it was coming from.
After about fifteen minutes she found herself in the kitchens. The large building was warm and busy. The head chef sat in her chair ordering the cooks and bakers with the skill of a practiced conductor. However even she wasn't able to keep control as the entire staff seemed to freeze as the queen of Hyrule walked in. Granted it was hard not to as no one ever recalled any queen entering the kitchens. She walked quickly, Violet and gold silks contrasting against the stained cotton of the kitchen staff like a peacock in a hen house.
Either unaware or unbothered by the stares of complete shock, Zelda moved towards a large pot that was simmering in the back. She looked over at the young lady holding a large spoon in shock. The queen, her senses somewhat coming back to her, cleared her throat, “What is it that you're cooking here miss?”
“Umm this is stew, your Highness. It's dinner for the staff.” She spoke softly, her voice shaking as if she expected to be fired on the spot.
“Can I have some?” The queen asked almost as nervously, “I don't want to take food out of your mouths- I appreciate your hard work. It just smells amazing.”
“O-of course your majesty.” The girl hurried to grab the nearest serving bowl, filling it and placing a spoon in it.
“Thank you.” Zelda graciously took the bowl placing the spoon to her lips immediately, nearly groaning in happiness. Then just as fast as she arrived the queen left the kitchens, leaving a sea of staff absolutely baffled.
Link stretched as he made his way toward the stables. He knew they had staff, however the idea of someone else taking care of his horse felt strange. Ilia had done that in the past but she was his best friend and had done it because she loved Epona. He knew that the stable master was a good man and the stable hands took excellent care of the horses. It was the idea that he suddenly had people who were paid to take care of his horse that he didn't really know how to process.
In truth, he was well liked by the staff however they didn't seem to recognize him in normal clothes. Which meant that he was actually able to get to know them on a more personal level. When he was in his prince or hero attire they kept a respectful distance. Shad, Auru and the head of staff also wouldn't exactly be thrilled to see the prince consort mucking out the horse stalls. Not to mention that the sight would spread like wildfire amongst the staff. Thankfully his simple Ordon clothes and a thick brown cloak were enough to allow him the freedom to tend to his horse during his breaks. He nodded to the old stable master as he walked toward Epona's stall.
“Afternoon Mr. Gotherd." The stable master said with a lazy smile.
“Afternoon, Mr. Marshall.” Link nodded as he grabbed the shovel. He didn't normally go by his last name. Granted he'd rarely had a reason, but Link would be a dead giveaway. Technically now it was his second last name or middle name. He wasn't exactly sure how it worked. Zelda had explained something about houses but that the royal family always had the last name Hyrule to denote status. So she had her ‘house’ family name and the royal Hyrule added at the end. He still didn't fully understand the difference but so long as he still got to keep his adoptive family’s name he really didn't care.
“You hear about what happened in the kitchens?” Mr. Marshall asked casually as he began to clean out another stall nearby.
“No?” Link’s ear twitched in the direction of the stable master. I wonder if Patty and Molly are at it again?
“Get this.” The man’s grin could be heard in his voice, “The queen.” he paused for dramatic effect, “Walked into the kitchens and asked for a bowl of stew! Peasant stew! Said it smelled delicious.” He shook his head, “I tell you what, I don't know what that farm boy she married did but she figured out where the real good food is. All the geese and duck got nothing on a stew made with scraps and had a long simmer.” He laughed warmly.
Well that's odd... She's not normally one to deviate from her schedule. But she did eat a pretty light breakfast. And I did tell her to try to be friendlier to the staff. However, with how she's been actin lately. He grumbled as he fought with his concern for his wife and his tight schedule. I already planned on meeting with Telma later about Zelda's present. Shad is with her most of the day anyways. He can keep an eye on her for a bit while I'm out.
Something is definitely off. Just ask her if she's okay, there’s no harm in asking. Shad walked just beside the queen, his ears keenly aware of the clink of the spoon against the bowl, “Umm your majesty, are you feeling alright?”
“Obviously.” She shot back with a surprising amount of heat.
The advisor bit his lip, “Forgive me, your majesty, I was just concerned about-”
“Shad. You're my assistant and advisor, not my physician. If I wasn't feeling alright, I would have told you already.” She snapped then froze as she watched him flinch, “Oh sweet Hylia. I'm sorry.” She felt tears sting her eyes, “I didn't mean to be so curt, I’ve just been so overwhelmed lately. We only have a few more days until we leave for Ordon and we still have so much left to do. And I haven't even gotten Link something yet.” She sniffled trying desperately not to cry.
Oh goddesses, she's crying. The queen is crying. What should I do? Ugh this was not in my orientation! “Well we could take a brea-” He immediately stopped as he saw the anger flash in her eyes, “Ooooor we can get a jump start on paperwork?” He offered tentatively.
“Ye-yes. I think moving onto the paperwork would be a good idea.”
Shad smiled happily escorting her to her study where he'd thankfully already laid out the rest of the paperwork for the next few days. He watched her shut the large oak door, walked a few paces away then let out a full body sigh. Link, I hope to Hylia you have better luck talking to her than me.
Link pulled his cloak tighter against him as he made his way down the streets of Castle Town. Normally he'd wave at people he knew but between the cold air and the secrecy of his mission, he kept his head down.
Hylia it's cold out here. If Zelda's sick might not be a good idea to travel. Granted I'll have to get her to admit she's sick first. That woman's gonna give me grey hairs before I'm thirty. He stopped on the mat outside the door before pushing it open. He smiled as he heard a familiar meow from one of the tables. He bent down to pet Louise giving her some chin rubs. “Hey sweet girl.”
“Well if it isn't Mr. Hero himself, how's your queen? Getting suspicious about you leaving the palace so much?” Telma teased then cackled as he rolled his eyes.
He sighed, “She’s worryin herself sick tryin to do a week's worth of work in three days. And I'm tryin my best to help her but she's stubborn.”
Telma patted his shoulder, “This time of year is always stressful just be patient with her. It's only been almost a year and a half since the invasion, you haven't even been married six months yet. Besides, I think her gift will definitely help her relax.”
“Thanks again for watchin her. Hope she hasn't been givin Louise too much trouble.”
“Well I do have a habit of taking in strays.” Telma smiled, “And this isn't Louise’s first time playing Mama.” She led him off to a side room and opened the door. As soon as she did a very loud high pitched meow was heard. “Oh someone's awake.”
A tiny fluffy tortoiseshell kitten immediately ran at Link and began scaling his pant leg. She hissed as he grabbed her by the scruff before plopping her in his hand. He leaned down to kiss her head and she growled but didn't stop him. “Hey now miss missy you came runnin up to me.” He chuckled as he petted under her chin which immediately made her start purring, “Oh you like that don't ya? See I'm not so bad.” He cooed before giving her another kiss in between her ears then held her up so he could look at her face, “Now listen, you can hiss, nip and swat at me all you want but you better not do that to your mama, ya hear?” The kitten responded by biting his nose. “Now that was just plain rude.” he snorted, “Ilia come by yet?”
“No, but she should be here sometime tonight. At least according to the letter she planned on leaving early yesterday morning. Although it might get a bit delayed with the snow.”
“Not with the horse she has. That thing is a force of nature on its own. I don't understand her.” Link rubs his eyebrows, “The Zora Prince offers to buy her any horse she wants as a thank you and she picks the draft horse a farmer was desperate to get rid of because it wouldn't listen to a soul.”
“Are you still mad that he embarrassed you in front of Zelda?”
“What? You mean when I tried to ride him and he refused to move? Or how after I used the same call as Ilia does to get him to move and I fell off because he decided that meant sit down?!”
“So I'll take that as a yes.” Telma chuckled, “According to her letter Ilia has a whole travel plan to make sure that little lady will be comfy and cozy the whole ride. She's absolutely thrilled about helping with the surprise.”
“I'm not shocked.” Link grinned, “She tries to act like she's above it but she's just as much of a romantic as Beth. Although I'm gettin nervous, she and my wife are starting to relax around each other.”
“I thought you wanted her to make friends outside of Castle Town?”
“I do. However, Ilia knows all the dumb shit I've done since I was a kid.”
“And your wife knows all the dumb shit you've done as an adult.” Telma shrugged then patted his cheek, “You're already screwed might as well accept it.”
Link let out a soft chuckle, “Yeah, a man and his dignity are soon parted. I just hope my wife feels well enough to travel. She's not gonna have to do a whole lot of walkin but travelin is still takes a lot out of ya. Especially with how quick she's been gettin worn out.”
“Well if she's been working like hell to close out the session I'm not shocked. With how many times you'd told me about carrying her to bed cause she fell asleep at her desk. Probably just needs a break.”
“I hope you're right. I'd hate for her to be too sick to travel or be miserable the whole break.” He said as the kitten was now loafed on his shoulder.
“Well, do what you can. I'll send a guard by to let you know when Ilia arrives. Now come here missy.” Telma cooed as the kitten complained about being removed from her spot, “Oh you're fine.”
Link smiled as he gave the kitten one last chin rub before heading out.
The surprisingly organized study’s single occupant had her head resting against the desk. Inkwell closed and papers pushed aside as the queen had decided to take a *very* short rest in hopes to help with being absolutely exhausted. Her intentions were destroyed as her fifteen minute rest turned into a two hour nap. Ugh why does my neck hurt so much? Wait, why is it so dark outside..... Oh no. Ugh I was supposed to be getting ahead on paperwork. I never take naps. Maybe I am sick? The stew thing was weird but I was nauseous all morning so obviously I'd be more inclined to eat later.
She groaned as she heard the bell tower ring. And now it's too late for me to go out to look for a gift for Link. And he's always so thoughtful with his gifts. She blinked as she felt tears drip onto her hand. I'm crying? Again? Ugh I'm such a mess.
“Zel?” Link's voice came through the other side of the door.
Shit. Get a hold of yourself. She willed the tears away and dabbed at her eyes with her handkerchief. Dammit why don't I have a mirror in here. Just act normal. “Come in.” She said as she grabbed the papers and opened the inkwell.
“Hey love.” He smiled at her like she hung the moon and stars herself. “You alright? Shad said you made a bit of a detour for an early lunch?”
“I was hungry.” She said calmly as she grabbed her quill.
He grabbed a chair and sat on it backwards resting his arms on the back, “I know you didn't eat much for breakfast.”
“I'm fine.”
“Darlin, I love you more than life itself, you are the most beautiful, caring and intelligent woman I have ever met. What did I say in my wedding vows?”
Zelda smiled despite herself, “That you'd be my confidant, lover, and friend. That you would be my partner in life so long as we lived.” Dammit, he's just trying to care for me and I'm making it hard on him.
“And after that.” He added, smiling as he took her hand, “Partners mean we're on the same team, and whatever is going on I just want to help.”
Don't cry. Don't cry. He's going to be even more concerned for nothing if I start crying. She swallowed back her tears, her voice barely above a whisper, “I know.” She heard him get up then felt his strong arms wrap around her in a tight embrace. She buried her face in his neck as she began to sob.
Link immediately lifted her up bridal style and carried her to their room. He sat down on their sofa and laid her on his lap. He felt her bury her face in his neck as she continued to cry. He rubbed her back gently as he recalled one of the old howling stones and began to hum a tune. He didn't know how long he held her, he just pressed kisses to the top of her head. Huh... She smells a little different. meh probably some new soap they used in the laundry. He couldn't help but smile when she finally looked at him. “Hylia's grace, you're beautiful.”
“Shut up. I'm puffy and snotty from crying. I'm an absolute mess.” She sniffled.
“Darlin, you're the most beautiful when you allow yourself to just be a person. You're a magnificent queen and I'm so proud of all the hard work you do. But you don't have to be strong all the time. Now tell me what's been goin on in that pretty head?”
“I don't know. I don't feel all that different? Aside from the fatigue, the only thing I've felt is a little nauseous but it passed.”
“We have a couple more days until we leave for Ordon. If you still don't feel well, I'll handle finishing up the paperwork with Shad and you can go see the physician. Does that sound fair?”
She sighed as she snuggled up against him, “Fine. But if it's not serious and she says it's okay, we're still going to Ordon. I want to snuggle with you in our tree house, drink hot cocoa, and watch the snow fall.”
“If she says it's okay. Then we'll go.” He smiled, “Besides I'm sure the other kids can't wait to spend the day with ‘Marin’.”
Zelda giggled despite herself, “It is nice to be able to put the title down for a while. Although I'm fairly certain Malo knows....”
“Yeah well with how much money and free labor that kid got out of me. He'll keep his mouth shut.” Link grumbled, “I still don't know how he roped the goron Elders into his schemes.”
“You didn't have to give him the money.”
“He had Gor Ebizo holdin the donation box. I can't say no to him, he's adorable.”
“And you can say no to Malo?” She smirked knowing his soft spot for children.
“Hey, I remember when that little varmint was born. Out of all the kids I watched, I swear none of them went out of their way to cause more trouble than him.” Link huffed as he crossed his arms, “That little shit charged me almost 600 rupees for magic armor I couldn't even move in, after I ran across Hyrule field carrying five gallons of hot spring water while dodgin kargaroks. If I had told his Mama half of what he got up to, he'd have been in more trouble than a fat goose near a butcher shop.”
Zelda couldn't help but laugh having heard this rant many times in the past year and a half, while Malo’s parents remained none the wiser of how their son managed to own successful shops.”I love you.” She looked at him with her soft blue eyes as she pulled him into a kiss.
“I love you too.” He smiled, “How about I run you a nice hot bath with those bath salts you like?”
She smirked against his neck then nibbled his ear, “Only if you join me~”
His hands were already on the hem of his tunic when there was a knock at the door. I swear to Hylia this better be important. He growled as he walked to the door of their quarters where he cracked the door open just enough to pop his head out, “Can I help you?” He smiled sharply at the young guard.
“S-sorry to disturb you, your grace. I was um told to send word to you by miss Telma.” The guard shook.
OF FUCKING COURSE SHE'D SHOW UP NOW. UGGGGHH I need to talk to her and have her wait another day or so til we know Zelda's alright. Murrrrrrr. Stupid past me. “Thank you. Tell her I'll be on my way in a bit.”
“What was that?” Zelda asked, confused at his grumblings.
“Oh Ashei needs me to help handle some recruits that got out of hand. But I can draw your bath before I leave.”
“Can't she handle it?” Zelda ran her across his chest.
Do not. I'm doing this for her. I need to get this handled. The timing is bad but this is important. “She wouldn't have asked for my help if she didn't need it.” He reasoned as he kissed her softly. “I'll be back as soon as I can.” Please don't be sad. Please don't be sad.
“Fine.” She crossed her arms, her voice sharp.
Link winced. Shit, well she isn't sad. “I promise I wouldn't leave if it weren't important.”
“I said it was fine.” She huffed as she grabbed a book off the counter. “Go do whatever it is you need to do that our sergeant can't seem to manage on her own.”
Ilia you really couldn't have picked a worse fuckin time. He sighed as he grabbed his heavy brown cloak.
“Hey idiot! Took you long enough to get here.” Ilia laughed then noticed his grumpy face. “Oh no what did you do?”
“I did nothin. That's part of the problem.” He grumbled. Ilia snorted, nearly falling off the bar stool as she wheezed. “It's not funny.” He huffed as he crossed his arms. However all it did was cause her to cackle harder. “If she makes me sleep on the couch it's your fault.”
“Fair.” Ilia choked out as she caught her breath, “It's good to see you! How ya been? How's ‘Marin’ aside from pissed off?” She grinned doing air quotes around the name fully aware of the woman's true identity.
“uggh” He rubbed his temples, “That's part of why I wanted to talk to you. Ya might have to wait a minute to leave with the kitten. I'm worried my darlin wife is sick and I want to make sure she gets the go ahead from the doctor before we leave.”
“Oh no. She have a cold or somethin?”
“I don't know. She's just been gettin real tired and moody. It might be just cause she's stressin herself out but I just want to make sure she gets a check up before we head out.”
“Well if I interrupted what I think I did then she's at least frustrated.” Ilia grinned.
“Hey now, Hena’s comin to visit with her family for the holidays. I could tell a few stories from our childhood or remind your dad of them. I'm sure he has plenty of stories he’d love to tell his daughter's girlfriend and her family about.”
Ilia just rolled her eyes, “Please dad’s gonna do that without prompting. Now let me see the baby!!” She squeaked with delight as Telma returned holding the tiny kitten who yawned and glared at the humans who dared wake her from her nap. “She's so cute, where did you find her?”
“Louise walked into the bar and started screaming at me til I followed her. We found a mama kitty with her babies outside in the cold. Link helped me bring them inside and we got them all warmed up and feeling better. We found the other kittens' homes once they were older and Jovani took in the mama cat, saying something about not wanting another thing to be abandoned and she gets along well with Gengle. But Link specially requested I keep this lil one for his wife. Which is honestly a gift from Hylia herself because this little lady is a spitfire.” She held up the kitten toward Ilia who responded by hissing.
“Aww she's just a little nervous. It's okay sweet baby.” Ilia petting her cheek softly, “See I'm not so - Ow! I was pettin you ya little shit.”
Link snorted, “Yeah she does that. She's a fuzzy lil terror.” He scooped her up from Telma, “Yeah you're a tiny lil menace who likes to bite her Papa’s fingers.” The kitten seemed to agree as she proceeded to chomp his fingers and bunny kick his hand.
“Are you sure this is a gift for your wife and not for yourself?” Ilia chuckled, “Cause bestowing a furry lil terror isn't exactly what I'd call a gift even if she is cute.”
Link smiled but his eyes looked almost wistful, “Trust me, this little kitten is absolutely perfect.” He kissed the kitten on the head who purred while growling. Telma and Ilia exchange a confused look then shrugged. He did know the queen better than anyone. “Thanks again for all this Ilia, I'll keep you posted on ‘Marin's’ health.”
“No problem.” Ilia smiled, “Besides it's probably just stress. I'm sure she'll be better in no time.”
She did not in fact feel better in no time. As over the next few days her symptoms only grew worse.
Zelda groaned as her stomach twisted, she bolted from their bed as she ran to the bathroom to puke. The hell is wrong with me?! Even when I do get sick I rarely puke.
“Zel?” Her husband called from the other side of the door, his voice thick from sleep, “Can I come in?”
“Yes.” She croaked before another wave of nausea hit. Despite everything she did relax as she felt him sit down behind her and gather up her hair. She leaned back against him as tears ran down her eyes, “I hate this. We're supposed to leave tomorrow!”
“I know, Darlin. We'll get it figured out. I've already told the staff to send for the physician. She should be here in a bit.”
“But-”
“Shad and I can handle the rest of the paperwork. Your job is to lay down and relax.” He kissed her head as he held her. He took a deep breath in smelling her soap, shampoo and something else. He still couldn't place it. It wasn't a bad smell, honestly it was slightly relaxing. Her normal floral notes almost seemed sweeter somehow. Although he'd never admit it as he had a will to live, he’d actually enjoyed how extra clingy she's been toward him the past few days.
She'd always been very cuddly with him when they were in the privacy of their own quarters. He had always been the one who was more publicly affectionate. Soft chaste kisses on her lips, cheeks and hands. He always tried to keep it respectful even though it apparently caused quite the stir amongst the entire city. He remembered how she'd turned scarlet the first time after the wedding that he'd kissed her in front of some of the noble women. Yet lately she was the one who initiated public displays of affection. He absolutely loved it, he received plenty of extra kisses and he also got to watch all the stuffy old nobles have a collective stroke. That bit he would happily watch forever.
Whatever affections he received wasn't worth watching her suffer. The fatigue had him worried but the vomiting scared him terribly, especially when it left her sobbing. She wasn't always composed and she was far from the ice queen many had assumed. In fact she actually loved her citizens quite a bit and worked tirelessly to help improve the kingdom. He'd asked once if she hadn't been born a princess what she'd do with her life and she had said she'd have probably gone into some sort of public service even if it was something as small as mayor. She wanted to help people improve their lives.
He realized quickly as they'd grown closer that her often interpreted icy demeanor was an unfortunate combination of her title, a lack of socialization outside of the palace and a resting face that made her look as Midna once put it ‘stabby’. Yet in truth she was actually very sweet and endlessly curious. She especially enjoyed her time in Ordon, not only as a break from work but because she was allowed to just be a person.
No one aside from Ilia and Malo knew her true identity. Rusl, despite having been a knight, had served when Zelda was just a girl and hadn't really interacted with her. She could exist for just a brief moment without the weight of her crown. She could be messy, loud, ask questions without expecting judgement. Even if she didn't go by her own name, she was at those moments the most herself she'd ever been. He loved seeing her like that more than anything. “Promise me you'll try to get some rest til the doctor comes?”
“I promise.” She sighed as she buried her face in his neck.
Shad was only slightly surprised by Link’s arrival. The prince was by all means quite responsible and he had his own duties than he tended to. He was also famously adoring of his wife, which somehow the older nobles had made it seem almost scandalous. This meant he not only convinced her to let him handle this but that she was concerned enough to comply. “I take it she's not doing better.”
“No. I just hope she's okay. I know how excited she gets for our trips back to Ordon. She loves workin to make Hyrule better. However these are the few moments she gets to relax.”
“Huh, I was unaware the queen knew how to do that.” Shad joked lightly.
“She does and she doesn't. I don't know much of what she was like before the invasion but I know it scared her a lot. She holds herself responsible for a lot of what happened even if she really didn't have much of a choice. She did the best she could. We both did. I know Aura talked about that plague that killed her mother and sister. Her father survived but between the grief and the illness he never fully recovered.”
“I didn't know that. As far as I remember the old King never appeared ill.”
“From what I've heard from the staff he rallied for two things. The first was for Zelda and the second was for his people. She was already devastated from that when the invasion hit. While I definitely think she's always been a workaholic. I think all the other shit just made it worse.”
The steward stared at the prince with a baffled expression. “That was insightful, your grace.”
“Hey I might be some goat herd from the middle of nowhere but you don't need no fancy book learnin to understand people. You just need to interact with em.” He smiled smugly as he read over the paper on the desk, “Lord Richards wants funding to add a moat around his house in the city? Sweet Hylia above, give me strength to deal with bullshit I'mma have to sift through and the patience not to choke half the jackasses who wrote them.”
“pffffffffffffft, I see now why the nobles don't like you.” Shad laughed, “Granted the queen isn't that much better. I've heard what she mutters under her breath at times.”
The prince smirked, “Trust me, she's worse than Ashei when she's mad. Apparently her father was a knight before he married into the royal family and gave his daughter a soldier’s tongue and his resting face.”
“Wait, if he was a knight, then why the hell was half the nobility up in arms when you married the queen?”
“I said he was a knight, didn't say he was common. He was from a noble background...kinda.”
“Kinda?”
“Acknowledged bastard. His mother was the maid. He grew up watching his half siblings treated like gold while treating him and his mother like shit. He became a knight and eventually became one of the personal guards of the royal family. He'd help his future wife sneak out of the castle and let her see what life was like for the everyday people.”
“Was he acknowledged then?”
“No. His dear old dad didn't acknowledge him til he found out that he was close with the princess. He was hoping for political leverage, he didn't get any because his son hated him. But it did allow him to marry the love of his life.” Link smiled then let out a tired sigh, “The invasion hurt and killed a lot of people in both realms. But I like to think that meetin new friends, meetin Zelda and Midna. Gettin to help rebuild, make sure everyone in our kingdom can have food in their bellies and a warm place to sleep. That's the good that came out of the shit.”
Shad’s brow furrowed slightly. Midna? Who's Midna? I'm pretty sure I heard the Queen whispering that name once or twice when she fell asleep at her desk. He smiled softly, “That’s a nice way to look at it, your grace.”
The prince snorted, “Your grace? Shad you knew me before all this. You've more than earned the right to call me Link.”
Shad's whole body seemed to crinkle at the suggestion, “I mean yes you're right. But to say that in front of the staff or the court?”
“I've given all the staff permission to call me by my first name. Most of them do.”
Shad's eyebrows disappeared in his hairline as his mouth once again went slack, “No wonder everyone looked at me so strangely when I refer to you by your title.”
Link grinned so brightly his prominent canine teeth were visible for a moment. Then the two men returned to the stack of paperwork, with the prince occasionally grumbling under his breath when he read something he particularly didn't like.
Fuck,Those teeth are scary, no wonder everyone thinks he's a werewolf. Wait did he growl at that document? I know Ashei thinks he's one.... But that's impossible right? Shad watched as the prince adjusted the oil lamp nearby, as a bit of eyeshine reflected back in the light. Does the queen know? No. She has to know. He's practicing glued to her side when they're together. Oh fuck I owe my girlfriend a giant apology and soo many rupees.
“Shad?”
“Yes, your werewo- grace, Link.”
Link raised an eyebrow, “I wanted you to go over this line, I don't quite know what it means.”
“Yes sir, I mean Link.” Shad moved to the document.
“So your highness, what seems to be troubling you?” The doctor, a middle aged woman with dark hair with just a few hints of grey and glasses smiled.
“I've been getting tired easily, I've been nauseous randomly while also being able to smell food from across the castle. Half the food I normally eat makes me want to gag. I've been snapping at everything then bursting into tears. I just want to go on my vacation with my husband.” She whined as she laid down on the examination table.
The doctor bit her lip, “My queen, when was your last period?”
Zelda furrowed her brow as she counted back weeks in her head. She bolted upright as she stared at the doctor wide eyed, “It should have happened two weeks ago. It's sometimes a few days late but it's usually fairly consistent. This is longer than normal.” The queen who was often called icy and unshakable processed the information with absolute wild eyes.
“We can do some testing to verify. But your symptoms match early pregnancy symptoms.” The doctor patted the young woman's shoulder, “Now how do you feel about all this? I know an heir is important but if you don't feel ready, you're more than young enough to get pregnant again.”
The young queen blinked in a daze as the words hit her. I'm pregnant. I mean it makes sense we weren't exactly trying to prevent it. I already know he's great with children. I'm going to be a mother. I'm going to have a family. She placed her hand on her stomach as tears ran down her cheeks.
“Your highness? Are you alright?” The doctor asked gently.
“Yes. More than alright.” She smiled so brightly as more tears fell, “I'm so happy. Wait, will I be okay to travel? I planned to visit my husband's family for the holidays.”
“So long as you're riding in the carriage and it's not too long of a trip it shouldn't be too much for you. If being there helps you relax all the better. I know for some people extended family is more stressful than fun.”
“No, they're great.” Zelda was sobbing now, “This is amazing.” She took a deep breath as she calmed herself down. “Can you tell Link I'm well enough to travel but not mention the pregnancy? I'm afraid I'll say something if I try to tell him now and I want to surprise him.”
“I'll run a urine test to know for sure, it should be ready in the evening.” The doctor smiled and nodded, “Of course. Now if you need anything let me know.”
Zelda nodded as she got up and changed back into her normal clothes. Her mind swam as she thought about the future. She smiled so much her cheeks began to hurt. I know exactly what to get him for Hylia's light.
Once she changed back she quickly made her way back to her quarters as she dug through one of her old chests. She found her mom's old box of crochet supplies. She smiled as she touched a soft ball of yarn. The feel reminded her of old memories and a blanket she had in a small chest in her room.
She dabbed at her eyes as she flipped through the old crochet patterns. She paused as she spotted one with her mother's hand writing. Mama, I miss you so much. I hope you and Papa are proud of me. Give Lizzie a hug from me. Tell her that her big sister loves her. Papa, help me keep this secret long enough to surprise him.
Link rubbed his eyes as he all but dragged himself to their quarters. His fingers moved to rub his temples. I get why she has so many headaches now. At least it's done. If I have to read one more ordinance I'm going to die. As he reached the door his ears twitched as he heard his wife humming. She must be feeling better, she only does that when she's happy. “Hey Darlin.” He said before his wife practically jumped into his arms. He caught her and his footing as she kissed him deeply. “Hmm you must be feelin much better then.” He smiled into the kiss.
“I am. And since the doctor said I was good to travel I figured we could celebrate~” She purred as she nibbled his ear.
Thank you Hylia that I found out early and was able to speak to Ilia before all this. He thought as he kicked open the door to the bedroom while she was leaving bruises on his neck.
The air was brisk, the snow gleamed in the sun as he double checked the hitch on the carriage, it was a plain one he'd bought off Telma, something that wouldn't stand out as royal. The young man smiled broadly as he patted Epona's neck before Storm, Zelda’s white stallion, nickered in complaint. “You'll get your attention, ya big baby.” He laughed as he patted the horse’s neck. “It's gonna be a long ride so be good. both of ya.” He did the I'm watching you gesture before he opened the door to the carriage, “How ya doin in here, Darlin?”
“Wonderful.” She yawned as she stretched out in the carriage, their bags tied and stacked inside next to her, “You'll be alright out there by yourself?”
“Hey doctor said you should stay in the carriage as a precaution. I'll be fine, love. Just rest. You need anythin just holler.”
“I will.” She waited as the door shut, staying perfectly still til she felt the carriage start to move. She let out a sigh as she opened the small basket she'd hidden under her cloak. The crochet hook was still attached to the small circle before glancing at the pattern that was pinned to the lid of the basket. Alright let's see where I left off.
As she moved the hook and yarn carefully, occasionally her hand stopped to rest on her stomach. I hope you have your Papa's smile and his laugh. I'll try to make sure you get a sibling or two. I don't want you to grow up alone. And I highly doubt your Papa would complain about it. She giggled to herself, remembering their honeymoon in the summer. Link with Colin sitting on his shoulders, his baby sister Fi firmly held against his hip, and Beth holding onto his leg. He'd laughed loudly, all three safe and secure in his care. She'd snorted as she watched him, enchanted by the sheer ridiculousness that was the man she married. You're definitely getting a sibling.
Meanwhile Link sat in the front of the carriage. Zel is gonna be so excited when she sees that lil fluffball. I can't wait to see everyone again. I hope Ma made her famous pumpkin pie. Colin’s gettin older, becomin a young man. Fi’s shootin up like a weed. She looks so much like Pa. Beth and Talo are getting bigger too. And Malo.....well he's Malo. I love livin in Castle town but it's nice to go back. Just to enjoy the quiet. Nice to get to chat with Pa and Ma a bit too. He smiled as he remembered the last time they were there had been for their wedding/honeymoon.
Technically they were already married when they arrived in Ordon. There was a big ceremony in the castle, a whole parade in town. The news had been so widespread even a few of his friends in Ordon had heard about the wedding. How the princess would be crowned and debated going into Castle town just to see it. Link was vaguely relieved when they realized that it would take place during peak planting season for pumpkins.
Zelda had agreed to go by her middle name. Well technically it was her second middle name or maybe it was her first and the other was her second first name. He wasn't sure. However it had been her favorite one and the one her family had called her, because as tradition both her mother and sister were also named Zelda, another naming thing he didn't understand. Marin was a common enough name due to old legends and stories that no one would really pick up anything. His own name was much the same which is why he didn't bother much about it.
He felt his eyes mist as he remembered seeing Zelda in that simple cream gown with a flower crown that the children had made special for her. He remembered standing next to Rusl, as his breath caught in his throat. Ilia walked Zelda down the aisle, as aside from him, she had become one of Zelda's close friends. Mayor Bo officiated as they exchanged their vows. The rings they traded were the same as the ones from the Castle. Zelda’s parents' wedding rings, which despite belonging to royalty were surprisingly plain. The only tell was the royal crest that was engraved on the inside. As far as he and his wife were concerned that had been their real wedding. The best thing that came out of that disaster.
The sky was dark by the time they reached the outskirts of Faron woods. This is far enough for tonight. We'll see how Zel’s doing. He opened the door and smiled as he saw her already asleep bundled under the thick blankets and furs. He yawned. Better join her before I fall over. He climbed in lifting up the blankets enough for him to snuggle next to her. “Good night, my love.” He whispered against her hair as he fell asleep.
Ilia groaned as she heard and felt the kitten bolt across her in a fit of zoomies. She waited for the terror to run past her and scooped her up. The kitten, as all tiny creatures do when thwarted in their chaos, screamed in indignation. “Oh did I foil your plans, you little menace?!” Ilia rolled her eyes as the kitten meowed, “I can't wait for your Papa to come get your annoying lil ass.”
“Please, you're gonna be so sad when she has to go.” Hena yawned as she leaned against her girlfriend to scratch the kitten’s chin, who immediately started purring. “Aww you're just a cutie.”
Ilia grumbled, “I don't understand you were so chill the whole ride here. Just the sweetest lil thing. Then the minute we get in here you lose your fucking mind?!”
“False sense of security.” Henna snickered, “Can't have you suspecting trouble. Then you'd stop her fun.”
“How did you sleep so well?!”
“Babe, I have two older siblings. One of which is insane and the other is Coro. You could blow a cannon next to the bed and I won't wake up.”
Ilia rolled her eyes, “Just help me keep the little creature contained. If she gets down stairs, Pa’s gonna start crying at how small and cute she is and it's gonna be a whole mess.”
“Would that mean he'd bring out photos?” Hena gave an evil grin and grabbed the little kitten, who was unbothered as she knew this was going to cause more chaos and was perfectly content snuggled safely against her chest, running down stairs to show the Bo while Ilia tailed her.
Tears were heard followed by the sound of the man cooing at the small kitten. Dammit. I should have kept my fucking mouth shut. Ilia sighed accepting her fate.
“Link! Link! Link!” Colin, Talo, and Beth cheered as they ran next to the carriage.
Link snorted, “I'm happy to see y’all too, now move aside I still have to park.”
“Okay.” All three pouted slightly as they backed over toward the path into town.
Link rolled his eyes but the smile never left his face as backed the carriage into the spot by his house, then hurried over to open the carriage, “We’re here. You alright, Darlin?” He asked softly as he gently placed his hand on her cheek. Despite the doctor's reassurances, she'd still been nauseous the past few days. He trusted the physician but he couldn't help but worry.
“I'm okay, Love.” She leaned into his palm, “Just a small stomach bug.”
“I know. I know. I just hate seeing you sick s’all”
She smiled as she gave him a soft kiss, “I love you.”
“Ewwww.” Talo groaned from somewhere behind Link.
“Ugh you're so immature Talo! They're married!” Beth chided as she squished past Link, “Marin!”
The young woman laughed, “Hi Beth.” She looked over at Link, “Move Darling, the children haven't greeted me yet.”
“Yes Ma'am.” He chuckled as he helped her out of the carriage.
“Marin! Link!” The kids cheer as they hug both adults.
“Hello, my dears! Oh you've all gotten so big!”
“You saw us in the spring for your wedding!” Colin snickered as she placed a kiss on the top of his head.
“And it's winter! That's a long time!” She countered.
“Hey Ma taught you better than to talk back to a lady.” Link laughed as he pulled his little brother in for a hug.
Zelda couldn't stop smiling as she hugged Talo and Beth. This is going to be our everyday, little ones running around causing chaos. I can't wait.
“Alright, Alright.” The young man smirked as he hugged all the kids, “Since you three decided to come here, why don't you help me bring the bags inside?”
“Nooo.” They whined collectively.
“Now darlings, the sooner we get our things put away the sooner we can visit with you all. And I brought some cocoa mix from castle town that I'm sure my dear husband would be happy to make for you al-.” She didn't finish her sentence before all three bolted to the back of the carriage grabbing as many bags as they could carry while still having an arm free for the ladder.
Link barely contained his amusement as he kissed his wife, “Golden Goddesses above, I love you.”
“I learned from the master.” She bumped her hip into his.
He beamed then turned as he saw Talo miss a rung and slip. Link bolted immediately, catching the boy. Unfortunately this caused the young man to lose balance making him fall into the snow with Talo and the bag on top of him. “ooof.”
“Oh sweet Hylia.” Zelda hurried over, “Are you two alright?”
“I'm okay, miss Marin.”
“S’fine, love.” Link grunted as Talo pushed off him to get up. “The only thing that hurts is my pride.”
The young woman giggled as she offered him a hand out of the snow, “I don't know. It was very sweet.” She dusted some snow off his jacket.
“Ugh are you two gonna kiss again- hey!” Talo yelped as a snowball hit him in the back of the head. The boy quickly grabbed the snow below him, forming his own weapon.
Colin, who had thrown the snowball, smirked already with another snowball in his hand, “Eat this!” He threw it with a winding pitch sailing past Talo toward Zelda, who blinked in surprise.
Link, ever the dutiful husband, shifted the bag Talo had dropped in front of his wife, shielding her from the attack. He kissed her hand only to dodge an incoming attack, “My lady, I must get you to safety!” He said his voice carried all the seriousness he used when training cadets, however the twinkle in his eyes gave him away.
Zelda snorted, “Oh please save me!” She threw a hand across her face for dramatic effect. She squeaked when she suddenly found herself draped around his shoulders, he held the bag in his teeth as he climbed up the ladder to their front porch as the kids threw snowballs at him. She however deeply regretted not eating the candied ginger the doctor had given her as she covered her mouth with her hand. Don't throw up on your husband. Don't throw up on your husband. Don't throw up on your husband.
Thankfully Link noticed her distress and quickly set her on her feet. “Sorry, Darlin.”
“It's okay. It's normally very sweet. Could you get the ginger?”
He pulled a wrapped one from his pocket and handed it to her, “Way ahead of you.”
“You're so thoughtful.” She bit back her tears as she popped it in her mouth. Zelda saw an incoming snowball and this time acted immediately moving her husband in front of her. She snorted as she watched the look of betrayal on his face as he felt the cold snow run down his neck.
“That's cold hearted.” He pouted then turned on his heels, “Alright, go tell your folks we arrived in one piece. We're gonna get settled then join y'all later.” He shook his head as he smiled.
“awwwww”
“We promise we won't be long, darlings.” Zelda reassured before entering their little treehouse. “Oh it's warm in here.”
“mmmhmm, I had Ilia throw a couple logs in the fire before we got here to warm the place up.”
“I love you.” She sniffled as she pulled him into a tight embrace.
“I love you. Now how about I carry my queen to bed so she can rest for a bit while I unpack?”
“I can climb on my own.” She pecked his cheek, “but a rest sounds lovely.”
“When did you wanna swing by Pa and Ma’s?”
“Probably around Dinner, did you want to go visit friends for a bit while I rest?”
“Are you sure?” He looked at her with soft blue eyes, “I don't want to leave you alone if you're not feeling well.”
She smiled, “I'll be fine, my love.”
He sighed, “Fine. But I'm putting a pot by the bed in case you get nauseous again. And I'll place the candied ginger on the nightstand.”
She gave him one last tender kiss then yelped in surprise as he pinched her butt. “Such rude behavior and from a prince no less.”
“Yeah well this prince was used as a human shield from a vicious snowball attack.”
“Oh you carry me up the ladder it's noble but I gently nudge you in front of me and suddenly it's a crime?” She snorted.
“Darlin, you pulled me.”
“only a little.”
“mmmhmm.”
“You're ridiculous.” She shook her head, biting back a smiled.
“And yet you married me anyways.”
“temporary insanity.”
“Now who's bein rude?”
“I'm a queen. A queen is allowed to be rude.”
“I wonder who made that rule.” He rolled his eyes.
“A very smart and capable woman.”
“With a great ass to boot.”
Zelda immediately broke into a fit of giggles, “Go visit. You can compliment my ass later tonight. When you remind me of why I have a favorite way to relax.”
“Alright, alright. I love you. I'll try to come by and check on ya in an hour and if I can't I'll send someone to check on ya at least.”
“I love you too.” She waited as he turned before she slapped his ass.
“Ornery.”
“I learned from the best.”
“You need to fucking take this cat. I cannot deal with this another day.” Ilia complained as soon as he walked in.
“She's not that bad.” Hena countered as she patted the sleeping kitten.
“Your Pa was gonna bust out those photos eventually. She just helped get it over faster.” Link rolled his eyes as he dodged an incoming pillow.
“Yeah yeah. Your wife has already seen all your embarrassing pictures.” Ilia huffed.
“And I've seen all of hers.” He grinned as he watched Ilia’s jaw drop.
“Wait really?!”
“mmmhmm.”
“Where did she hide them?”
“Back of the closet.”
“How mad was she?” Ilia snickered.
“She was upset but it quickly turned into tears and grateful kisses.”
“And other things I assume.”
“Hylia, have you always had such a dirty mind?” Link rolled his eyes, “Or did this come about because of the head injury?”
Ilia smacked him lightly on the arm, “Well before that, thank you very much.”
“It was the gay panic.” Bo called from the other room, laughing.
“PA!”
Hena and Link both wheezed, nearly falling over laughing. The kitten, annoyed that her bed was shaking stretched before padding over to Link and nuzzling his leg. He picked her up, placing a few kisses on her little head.
“You miss your Pa? huh?” He cooed, “I missed you too, sweetie.”
“That thing is not sweet.” Ilia grumbled, “She kept attacking my toes!”
“Hey, that's your fault for having attackable toes.” Hena smirked as she hugged Ilia from behind.
“She's just a sweet lil baby? Aren't you? Aren't you my sweet lil girl?” Link rubbed his cheeks against the kitten who purred happily.
Bo nodded as he walked into the room, “With the way you're talkin surprised you and Marin don't have a little one on the way.”
Link shook his head, “We haven't even been married a year. Give it some time. It’ll happen when it happens. I just want her to feel prepared. Things have changed a lot over the past year and a half.” He sighed, “I don't want her to feel obligated to anythin. I want her to want a baby on her own. I mean she's gonna be doin all the work.”
Bo nodded as he patted Link firmly on the back, “Glad Rusl and I taught you well. You want to keep a good relationship. You need to respect them. Especially when it comes to this. Granted for me I was the one tellin her to wait because I was just elected mayor. Besides, I was also helpin Rus with this little fella!” He ruffled Link's hair, before pulling him into a tight bear hug, “Oh we're all so proud of you. Now set the lil kitty down and go visit your parents.”
“You just want more kitten snuggles.” Link grinned.
“Guilty.” He chuckled before practically melting as Link handed him the kitten, “You're so precious and small. Do you know? Do you know how cute you are?”
Ilia rolled her eyes, “it's to hide the fact that she's an absolute brat.”
“Hey I did warn you.” He laughed as he walked out the door. Ugh I haven't seen Ma and Pa in ages. And I get to see Fifi!! She's always gotten so big every time I see her. Ugh I hope our kid is as sweet as her. He blinked a little as he realized what he thought. Am I really thinking about kids? I mean it's not like I don't have experience, I've changed the diapers of every kid in this village. He felt his chest tighten as he pictured a small child with Zelda’s smile and his nose. Fuck I need to talk to Zelda. And my parents.” He opened the door to the small house.
Uli immediately pulled him into a tight hug, “Oh my goodness! It's wonderful to see you!”
“big bwoder!!” Fi cheered as she toddled over to him immediately putting her arms up.
“Hey Fifi!” He lifted her up with one strong arm while the other was still wrapped around Uli. “Ugh you're gettin big. I might need to start using two hands to carry ya.’ He made an exaggerated grunting noise as he did which made her giggle. “Where's Colin?”
“He's still out throwing snowballs with his friends.” Rusl laughed as he patted his eldest’s back, “Where's Marin?”
“Shi-taki mushroom” He coughed then glanced at the clock, “She hasn't been feelin great. Gettin tired real easy, nauseous. I must have lost track of time with Ilia. I was gonna check on her-”
Uli patted his shoulder with a knowing smile on her face, “I'll check on her, love. You spent some time with your Pa and Fifi.”
“Ma are you sure-” He shut his mouth immediately when she raised her finger.
“I wouldn't have offered, if I wasn't sure. Now sit down. Dinner’s on the fire. One of you check it and stir it every so often.”
“Yes Ma'am.” Link and Rusl said at the same time.
Zelda moved the hook through the yarn, almost ready to tie it off when she heard a knock at the door. Shit. Hide it. She quickly shoved her project in the basket then placed it behind her pillow. “Come in.”
Uli smiled as she opened the door, “Hi Marin, Link told me you've been feelin off, so I figured I'd make you some tea.”
“Oh, thank you.” She stretched before climbing down the latter and took a seat at a small table Link had built during their honeymoon. “I appreciate you coming to do this but it's really not necessary.”
The blonde woman just waved her hand dismissively, “We’re family. Least I can do.”
The young woman felt her heart clench at her words. I suppose I already had a family again. “Thanks.” She tried and failed to cover the way her voice broke with emotion. Don't cry. Don't cry. She repeated desperately trying to hold it together when the older woman thumbed away a stray tear.
“I know you and Link haven't been together that long but I see the way you look at each other. The way he talked about you, like you hung the moon and stars.”
“He changed my life. After everything. Losing my mom and sister, then my father, the invasion. After all of that he was one of the few people who was able to ground me, bring me hope after the dust settled. He always tells me he doesn't know how he managed to marry me but honestly I feel like I'm the one who got lucky.”
“He's always been a sweet boy.” Uli smiled, “Honestly one of the reasons I fell so hard for Rusl.”
“You weren't together when he was adopted?’
“Not at first. I mean I knew him. I grew up not far outside of Ordon. My Pa was a hunter and a tanner. We mostly lived out in Faron but we'd come into town to sell furs and other goods. I'd met Rusl on and off but we weren't close. He'd told me he planned on becoming a knight and I didn't want to get too close to someone whose line of work could be so dangerous. Also he was a little insufferable about it. It was about two or three years later that I actually got to know him. I was in the market selling my father's wares when a little boy couldn't be older than two came toddling over and immediately put his chubby little arms up. I acted immediately scooping him up.”
~Flashback~
Uli bit her lip as she scanned the village. It's not that big, his parents can't have gone that far.
“Link! LINK!” A young man’s voice called frantically as he ran through the village. “Link!”
“Papa!” The little boy in her arms clapped his hands.
“Link!” The young man bolted toward her, immediately retrieving his son from her arms, “Oh thank Hylia you're safe!” He all but sobbed as he held the small child in his arms. He looked at her, his mind seemingly catching up to him, “Thank you-”
“Uli.” She smiled, “Rusl, wasn't it.”
He nodded as he tried desperately to compose himself, but tears still ran down his cheeks. He blinked as he felt his son bury himself into his chest as if trying to reassure him that he was okay. “Yeah.”
“Surprised to see you back here.” She leaned against the cart, “Didn't you say somethin about joinin the guard and being a knight?”
The young man shrugged, “I did. But I left. Have my boy to take care of now.”
“Well, you better flag down his mama before she kills you.” Uli smiled immediately, glancing around for someone else. He’s a bit young to have a son, he's barely older than me if I remember.
“It's just me.”
Well way to put your foot in your mouth Uli. She thought, “Oh I'm so sorry, did she not-”
“I have no idea.”
“Wait, what? How?”
“I was out with my platoon. We found a small village that had burnt in a fire. I kept hearing a crying noise and found him under a blanket outside a house. No one else was around. I couldn't just leave him there so I took him with me. I thought about taking to the orphanage in Castle Town but he always calmed down when I held him. Trust me the others tried but he only seemed comfortable with me. So I left, took my last pay and came back home. Been raising him ever since. Although honestly I'm lucky, the entire village has pitched in to help me. Although now that he's figured out how to run I think I'm going to go bald before I'm seventeen.”
Uli giggled then blinked as she saw the boy stick his arms out toward her, “Sorry sweetie you gotta stay with your pa.”
“Huh, he must really like you. He normally doesn't like anyone else but me to hold him. My buddy Bo picked him up, poor thing cried his little eyes out. Although between the two of them I think Bo was sadder than he was. Never seen a man look so dejected.”
Uli laughed, then glanced at Rusl, who nodded, before she took the boy back in her arms, “You’re just particularly aren't you.” She cooed at him, “Yeah, it's okay. I'm picky too.”
~end of flashback~
“T-that’s so cute!” Zelda sobbed, surrendering fully to her tears.
The kettle whistled and Uli got up and poured the water into the teapot before bringing it and some cups to the little table.
“As soon as I saw Rusl, the man who’d spent most of his life wantin to be a knight, holdin that little boy without an ounce of regret in his face. I knew that was a man I wanted to get to know.” She poured the tea, scooting a cup toward Zelda who had calmed down enough that she wasn't in a full blown sob.
The young woman blew on the tea lightly before taking a sip, “mmm that's actually really nice.”
“It worked wonders for me when I was dealing with mornin sickness.” Uli said causally as if she was talking about the weather.
Zelda blanched looking at her mother in law with panicked eyes, “H-how did you-”
“Link mentioned you've been tired and nauseous lately. I connected the dots. Don't worry he's as clueless as his Pa.” She gave the young woman's hand a squeeze, “How are you?”
“Excited. Nervous. Scared.” She admitted shyly.
Uli laughed, “I'd be more worried if you weren't scared, but I know my son, he's gonna do everything he can to support you. And if you want, when it gets closer I'd be more than happy to stay with you both to help take care of the little one. I know it's rough those first few months.”
Zelda cleared her throat slightly, “About that, I have something to tell you, don't freak-”
“Honey, I already know you're the queen of Hyrule. The whole village knows.” Uli said calmly although she snorted at the young woman's baffled expression.
“When did you figure that out?!”
“Almost half the village went up for the coronation. You looked beautiful by the way. And imagine our surprise to see our son and his wife wearing crowns.” She giggled, “Honestly it's been a running joke since we've found out. We figured you'd tell us when you were ready.”
“Well.... I am deeply embarrassed.” She buried her head in her hands, “Sorry we didn't tell you, I... rarely get a chance to be a normal person. Coming here has always been a relief from the weight of everything.”
Uli gave her hand a squeeze, “Well I'm happy we can give you that, Marin.” She smiled, “Where did that name come from anyways?”
“It's one of my names actually. My full name is Zelda Alexandria Cassandra Elizabeth Marin Harkkin Tudor Churchill Hyrule. Every woman in the royal family is named Zelda, my mother's paternal side had a thing about carrying on names from elders for a few generations. I don't even remember honestly it's been so long. But my mother Zelda Alexandria Cassandra Delphine went by Alex with her family as she was the first with Alexandria in her name, I went by Marin as that was my paternal grandmother’s name and she had died not long after I was born. My little sister Zelda Alexandria Elizabeth Malon went by Lizzie as having another M name would have given us another headache. They passed when I was around ten so after that most people called me Zelda. My Pa always called me Marin so I guess it was my way of feeling more at home.”
“Well you're family to us so we're glad you feel that way.” She smiled, “And I wasn't kidding. If you need me to be there for when the baby comes, even to just hold your hand. I'll be there in a heartbeat.”
“Hylia dammit I just stopped crying.” Zelda dabbed at her eyes with her handkerchief.
“Sorry, dear.” Uli giggled sympathetically as she rubbed the younger woman's back.
Link bit his lip as he leaned back on the sofa, his little sister sleeping on his stomach. “Pa, can I ask you something?”
“Course. You can ask me anything, you know that.”
“W-when did you know that you wanted to be a father?” He asked, keeping his eyes on his sleeping sister, partly because of how cute she was and partly because he couldn't quite look him in the eye.
Rusl let out a gentle chuckle, “I can tell you but I don't know if my answer is gonna be any help.” He waited for his son to nod, “When I found you, you were just a little thing, crying and scared. I was scared myself, but I wasn't gonna leave you there so I picked you up and suddenly you stopped crying. You snuggled into me, like you knew that you were finally safe. I felt insane for even thinkin it, cause I was barely a man, but a part of me knew that you were my son.” Rusl wiped at his eyes as he smiled at the young man that boy had become.
“You're right.” Link let out a weepy laugh, “That wasn't helpful at all.”
Rusl snorted, “Told ya.” They both laughed for a bit before he spoke again, “You and Marin expecting?”
Link shook his head, “No, but Bo said something about it. And now I can't get it out of my head.”
“Well you're about four years and a marriage ahead of me.” Rusl grinned, “You talked to your wife about it?”
“No. I mean she's already not feeling the best and we literally just arrived here. I don't wanna overwhelm her.”
“You don't have to talk to her about it right this minute, but sooner the better for these things. Goddesses know that if your Ma finds out she'll be at your door before you can blink.”
“All the moms in the village would be there in a minute.” He countered.
“True, but your Ma’ll be there first.”
Link shook his head, “I think she'd have more trouble than you'd think.”
“Please she'd stare down the royal guard so bad they'd turn tail and run.”
The young man froze, staring up at his dad with a slightly panicked expression, “What would she have to scare off the royal guard for?” He desperately tried and failed to keep the worry out of his voice.
“I wouldn't imagine that we'd easily be able to waltz into the castle to see the queen, now would we?” Rusl ruffled his son’s hair, “We went to the coronation.”
“Who all knows-”
“Everyone ‘cept the kids, although Malo probably knows.”
“Well glad to know that's how you found out otherwise I'd have killed Ilia for nothing.”
“You told Ilia?!” Rusl asked, looking somewhere between crestfallen and annoyed.
“Not intentionally! She found out when Zel and I had just started dating. She was visiting Telma, we both had a couple drinks in us. It came out.”
“Of course Telma was involved somehow. Dammit, that's it. In my next life I'm running a bar. That woman knows more about the goings on in Hyrule than half the reporters and your wife and you combined.”
“Yeah you're probably right about that.” Link’s nose crinkled, “I think little miss needs changin.”
“Well you better get to changin her then. After all, it's been a bit since you had to change one and you're gonna need to get used to it if you wanna be a Pa.”
Link rolled his eyes as he carried his sister to the changing table, “You just don't wanna have to do it.”
“Hey I changed her twice earlier. Lil shit pissed on me as a thank you.” Rusl laughed, “Although she's not nearly as bad as you were. I swear for the first few months every time I went to change you, you peed on me. After the fourth time I started taking my shirt off beforehand just so I wouldn't have to wash it.”
Link groaned as he cleaned up the baby, “You tell that to my wife, you're dead, old man.”
“You realize she's alone with your Ma right now and she's so much worse about that than I am.”
“She is for Colin. Not for me.” He grumbled, “You already told my wife about the bath time incident.”
“Hey, that's a cute story.”
“Not when you tell it on my wedding day.”
“Hey, consider it a preview for when you two do have a kid.”
“Hylia save me if they're that rambunctious.”
Zelda yawned as she climbed up to their bed, “Remind me to tell Uli that her soup was delicious.”
“I’m sure I can make it for you when we get back to the Castle.” Link smiled as he settled next to her.
“Sorry I didn't go out much today.”
“Darlin’, it's okay. We just got here.” He tucked a strand of brown hair behind her ear, “Sides sounds like you and Ma had a nice visit.”
“We did.” She snuggled closer to rest her head on his chest, “Your family has always been very welcoming.”
“Hey, you're pretty easy to love.” He kissed her head as he wrapped his arm around her.
Zelda felt more tears coming, “I love you.”
Link thumbed her tears away, “I love you too.”
“So what did you and your Pa talk about?”
“Mostly trying to keep him from telling you all the embarrassin stories he likes to pull out whenever you're around.” He groaned.
She snorted, “Like the one where you ran naked through the village trying to escape bathtime?”
“Of course you remember that.” He said flatly.
“It's hard not to when it was part of his best man speech.”
“Don't remind me.”
Zelda kissed his chin, “How was Fifi?”
“Adorable. We had a very serious game of peek a boo. Fed her some mashed pumpkin, which she ate about half of. Changed her clothes because she was wearin the other half. She took a nap on my chest. I talked with Pa, she woke up and needed changin. I cleaned her up and gave her a nice bath. As soon as I finished gettin her cleaned she pooped all over herself. Pa and I both had to tag team to clean her up after that. Gave her another bath. Put her down for another nap.”
“Sounds like a full day.”
“It was but she's worth it. Besides, spent most of my life dealing with shit. At least she's cute and doesn’t try to kick me in the head.”
Zelda snorted, “Only you would compare a baby to a goat.”
“I mean they're both called kids, they both eat things they shouldn't, love getting into trouble. Only real difference is thumbs when ya think about it.”
“You're absolutely ridiculous.” She laughed so hard tears leaked from her eyes.
“And you married me anyways.”
“Well certainly wasn't my worst decision”
“I love you.” He snorted as he kissed her sweetly.
“I love you too.” She yawned, “What's the plan for tomorrow?”
“Well since it's Hylia's light, I figured we could start with breakfast, then we can do our gift exchange.”
“How about we start with the gift exchange?”
Link grinned, “Well I guess we can start with the presents, if that's what my darlin wife wants.”
“Only because I don't think I can keep your gift a secret any longer.”
He snorted, “Yeah I don't think I can either.” He gave her another tender kiss, “Good night, Darlin'.”
“Good night, my love.”
Link woke up early, however this time he had a reason. Although his plan started with a snag as his wife was once again laying on top of him. Must carefully extract self. Don't. Wake. Wife. He gently and slowly moved her off.
“hmm” She muttered in her sleep as she snuggled back against him.
Dammit. He bit back a sigh as he once again gently tried to lift her off. This time he managed to free one of his legs and slid it off the bed. Little further. He scooted himself right on the edge of the bed, and stood. SUCCESS!! He quickly climbed down the ladder and slid out the door.
Zelda woke earlier than normal, noticing immediately that their bed was missing an occupant. Well at least the sun is out, mostly. This gives me a chance to wrap his present. She carefully opened her crochet basket where she had hidden her project. She carefully lifted the purple booties, they weren't particularly fancy. She hadn't really done much in the way of crocheting in a long time and half of the project was spent relearning how to do it. The other half had been her restarting if something looked a bit too off. Uli had actually helped her finish them off and taught her how to correct small mistakes. She grabbed some tissue paper and carefully wrapped them up before placing them in the small box. She tied it shut with a ribbon
She carefully placed it back in her basket before she yawned. Well it's not daytime yet. A few more hours won't kill anyone. Zelda immediately fell back asleep with her arms wrapped around Link’s pillow.
Link smiled as he walked back to their house, the kitten was warm in her little carrier under his cloak. The sun was well and out now. I didn't think I'd talk to Ilia and them that long. He climbed up to his door and carefully opened it. He glanced around before he saw his wife asleep holding his pillow. Well I'll get breakfast started. Hopefully the little kitten stays sleepy for a little while longer. As if on cue the kitten let out a mew as if she knew it would annoy him.
“Shush. Don't go wakin your Mama or you'll ruin the surprise. I'll turn you loose once she gets up. I just need to get the kettle on.” He threw another log in the fire as he filled the tea kettle and set it on the hearth to boil. He grabbed his heavy cast iron skillet as he threw some bacon he'd gotten the day before into the pan. He smiled as the bacon sizzled before grabbing a few eggs from his pantry.
“Something smells good.” Zelda yawned.
“I know you said gift exchange first but you looked so cute I didn't wanna wake ya.” He moved away from the pan enough to give her a soft peck on the lips, “You want toast?”
“Sure, I'll slice the bread.”
They moved around each other comfortably, as she handed him the slices as he plated the bacon and eggs. Despite the strong smell of the bacon he could still smell that sweet scent from his wife that he couldn't quite place. He held her close before she could grab the kettle, pressing his nose against her neck.
“Are you sniffing me?” She guffawed.
“You smell good.”
“You're going to burn the toast!” She squeaked as he nibbled her ear, “Naughty.”
He let her go with a smack to her butt which she returned after making their tea. He smirked, grinned enough to show his fangs and snapped his teeth. He watched her roll her eyes as she blushed. He sniffed as he smelled a burning smell, “Shit!” He grumbled as he quickly pulled the slightly burnt bread from the pan. He grumbled as he set the plates down as he heard her smug little hum. “Hey it's only burnt a little.” He huffed.
“I told you~”
“Yes, yes.” He rolled his eyes as he pecked her lips, “Now how about that gift exchange?”
“You just set the food down.” She giggled, “You must be excited if you're willing to delay a meal.”
“Something like that.” He smiled, “Now close your eyes.” He watched making sure she didn't peek before he set the basket on the chair and scooped the sleepy kitten up. He walked over holding the kitten out for her to take. “Open your eyes, Darlin.”
Zelda immediately froze as she looked at the sleepy little kitten in her husband's hands. “Oh my Hylia she's adorable!” Tears immediately streamed down her cheeks as she carefully took the kitten from his hands. “Link. She's beautiful.”
“Yeah, her coat pattern reminded me of Midna. Apparently she's just as much of a little shit. Drove Ilia up a wall the past few days.”
Zelda laughed through her tears as she cuddled the kitten, “She's perfect.” The kitten having woken up to a downpour of tears let out a mildly irritated meow. “Dammit, I can't stop crying. She's so precious.” She placed gentle kisses on the kitten’s head til the little fuzzball wiggled toward the bacon. “No. Not for you, miss. It will upset your tummy.” She carefully placed the fussy kitten down on the floor. The tiny kitten immediately zoomed off, practically bouncing off the walls as she explored her new home. The young woman laughed as she dabbed at her eyes before looking at her husband, “I love you so much.”
“I love you too, princess.” He purred as he pulled her close, “So what did you get me?” He looked bemused as he watched her smile grow even larger. He tilted his head as he watched her dig through a small basket before pulling out an even smaller box. He can't help but chuckle as he sees her shaking with excitement.
“Here.”
He took the plain brown box from her, carefully pulling the ribbon off. The hell? He thought as he furrowed his brow, as he saw the absurd amount of tissue paper. “Ya didn't have to wrap it twice.” He teased, waiting for her to snip back at him. When she didn't he immediately looked at her. She was smiling but it didn't quite meet her eyes, still shaking. Why does she look scared? The hell she get me? He opened his mouth then shut it as she pointed at the box. Carefully he dug through the tissue paper, his hands trying to feel whatever was wrapped within. As he finally reached the item within his breath caught in his throat. His vision blurred as tears filled his eyes as he picked up the purple booties like they were made of glass. He looked at her, “Darlin, Zelda. Love, are you?”
“Yes, I'm pregnant. You're going to be a father, my love.”
Link wobbled on his feet like a newborn foal, “We’re gonna have a baby?” He asked, voice fragile and shaking.
“Yes.” She answered, still shaking herself.
He moved immediately as he pulled her into a tight embrace, peppering her face with kisses as happy tears ran down his cheeks, “I love you so much.” He scooped her and spun her around.
“Link! Link! I'm going to puke on you if you don't stop!”
“Shit. Sorry.” He set her down then collapsed in his chair, “Holy shit.” He beamed as he ran a hand through his hair, “I'm gonna be a Papa.”
Zelda giggled, “Your Ma was a bit surprised it took this long.”
“SHE KNEW?!” He stared, his jaw slack opening and closing like a fish.
“She figured it out yesterday when she came by. Also the entire village knows I'm the queen.”
“I- but. Wait. You found that out too?”
“You knew?!”
“I found out yesterday from Pa.”
She shook her head, “Well, I suppose it was going to come out eventually.”
He laughed, “Well I think this has to be the best gift I've ever gotten.” His stomach growled, “How about we eat our breakfast?”
“Umm, darling.” Zelda bit her lip, as she pointed to the table where their food had been forgotten.
Well not completely forgotten, and unfortunately unguarded. The tiny kitten, whose little face was covered in egg yolk, had scarfed down the eggs and was about half way through a piece of bacon. She growled as he tried to take the bacon from her.
“For Hylia’s sake, let go ya little varmint!” He grumbled as he scooped her up, the bacon still in her mouth. He held her to his face, “Listen here miss missy, if you keep eating that you're gonna get an upset tummy and you're gonna poop all over yourself and then I'm gonna have to give you a bath. You hated it the first time I gave you one, you're sure as shit ain't gonna like it again. Now give me the bacon.” She swatted him in the nose. “Don't sass me, fuzzball.”
Zelda snorted at the interaction, placing a hand over her stomach. Little one, you're going to have your Papa wrapped around your finger. “Let me try.” She carefully took the kitten from him, scratching under her yolk covered chin. The little kitten purred instantly as she let go of her stolen treat to snuggle further into her hold.
“That's some bullshit.” He huffed although a smile still graced his lips, “Watcha gonna name her?”
Zelda looked down at the little tortoiseshell kitten who was currently trying and failing to lick the egg off her face, “Mischief.”
“Hey we weren't far off in name ideas.”
“Really what were you thinking of naming her?”
“Shithead.”
She let out a deep disappointed sigh, “That is not close.”
“Look me in the eyes and tell me Mischief isn't just a polite way to say shithead.” He grinned as she rolled her eyes at him.
“You're an idiot.”
“Maybe but can't be that dumb if you're smilin”
“I am and I hate it.”
“You love it~”
She snorted as he pulled her in for a kiss. “You're ridiculous.”
“Yup.” He smirked, “But you married me anyways.”
“Best decision I ever made.”
