Work Text:
The moon shines brightly upon the city streets. You glance up at it as you rest in your bus seat after work. You've had a very tiring day, running data analysis tests for your next big research project for hours. You gently rest your head against the window and sigh.
After a short while, the bus slows to a stop. You yawn as you stand up to get off. You step out into the cool autumn air and feel the wind blow through your hair. It's late and you really just want to go home. You walk the short distance from the bus stop to your apartment and dig out your keys.
To your surprise, before you can get the key into the lock, the door opens for you and you're greeted by Volo. "I've been waiting for you, my dear," he says with a sweet smile on his face.
You hadn't been expecting him to be home, though it's a lovely surprise. Usually he's home much later than you with the way his job as a historian is. He's always staying over, too engrossed in his work to check the time and travel home. It's always a treat to see him as you return from the lab.
You smile and step inside. Volo locks the door behind you and envelopes you in a tight embrace. “I missed you today,” he says, muffled by your hair as he buries himself into your head. You tell him you missed him too and he squeezes you harder. His embrace always feels like a pillow. “Come with me,” he asks. “I’ve just finished cooking dinner and they’re playing re-runs on Boomerang.”
Dinner? A home-cooked meal with your nostalgic cartoons? Now this is something you wouldn’t expect. You follow him into the kitchen, excited to see what he’s made. You look towards the stove and see a whole pot of alfredo. Your favorite! You inhale deeply and tell Volo how good it smells. “Go ahead and dig in,” he says while pushing you toward the counter.
You waste no time as you grab an empty bowl and add the pasta to it. You share a few quick stolen glances and light kisses in between filling your bowls. The two of you make your way to the living room and sit closely together on the loveseat. Codename: Kids Next Door plays quietly on the TV in front of you. With no hesitation you start to eat the alfredo, which seems to melt in your mouth.
“Tasty?” Volo chuckles and asks as he watches you devour the pasta. He moves his hand to gently rub your back. It feels so soothing. “I thought you’d like it. I know you’ve been hard at work with your new project. Care to tell me about it, love?”
You excitedly gush to him about the work you’ve been doing today. Data gathering, analysis, researching sources… It’s hard work. Volo can tell as you explain it that it weighs on you and that you really are quite tired tonight. He rests a hand on your shoulder and pulls you in closer. “My dear, I think it’s due time for you to rest.”
At first you protest, saying you’re not that tired. You can stay up a little longer. You just want to watch your childhood shows and talk to your partner! But your eyelids start to feel heavy, you can tell you’re getting a little sleepy and he can too. Volo lifts your chin up and looks into your eyes, telling you, “Come now. We can continue this in bed.”
He takes your dishes into the kitchen before leading you to your shared bedroom. You stretch and yawn as you’re about to get into bed, but Volo stops you. “Wait,” he whispers into your ear, “Let’s get more… comfortable, yes?”
Before you can say anything, he slips his hands under your shirt and helps you unclasp your bra. “I know this must be so uncomfortable for you to sleep in,” he chuckles to himself. Volo continues to undress you until you’re left in your shirt and underwear. He fishes you a pair of soft fleece pajama pants and turns on the bedroom TV. The lights turn off as you slip into the pants and sit down in bed. Volo slides into the other side and pulls you in by your waist.
You both get cozy under the covers as the soft light of the TV shines onto you. You let out a big yawn as he pulls you closer. You easily start to drift off, with the last thing you hear being Volo’s voice.
“Sweet dreams, my angel.”
