It hasn't been this loud since they were all at Wammy's together. It fills Matt's chest with a strange sort of relief. He'd never been able to adjust to the silence.
Near and Mello are bickering about which way to slice the cake properly and Matt just lets them, knowing that he's just going to tear into it with a fork when he wakes up hungry at three a.m.
His lips curl into a smile around his cigarette. This was all that he had wanted for his birthday, the three of them together again like this.
He is whole.
