Reforming the Rotten

Summary:

A sequel to Rocket Catdets. Rose and Violet show their most merciful side.

Notes:

This is an optional sequel. I personally see it as canon to my AU but you can disagree.

Work Text:

In the jaguars’ ship, Rose and Violet were packing up their things.

“YAY-OK has been so sad lately.” Rose frowned as she loaded up some food.

“Of course he is, those monkeys were like family to him and now he can’t see them.” Violet reminded Rose. “The sooner we leave and come back the better.”

“Still, are you sure about this? Maybe they were just manipulating you.” Rose told her.

“I have a feeling in my heart that this isn’t the case. They seem lost, maybe still bitter, but I can tell they want to improve, they just don’t know how.” Violet explained. “And if I’m wrong, at least I can say I gave it a try.”

Far away, Gus sighed to himself as he slept on the bed inside of his new asteroid home.

“Hey Gus…” Wally yawned as he went to the fridge, picked up a bottle of juice and slowly sipped at it.

“Wally, I have something to say.” Gus looked at him.

“What?” Wally turned to his older brother.

“I feel like this is my fault. More than yours.” Gus admitted.

“How come?” Wally shook his head in confusion.

“You used to be a better person than me, willing to help others. Sure you were pretty selfish other times, but not as much as you would become… We both got worse.” Gus explained. “The point is… I may have influenced the worst side of you.”

“But you were the one who got me out of trouble in the end, even if you made fun of me before and after.” Wally tried to justify his brother's actions a little.

“No, Wally. Face it. If it wasn't for me, you wouldn't be imprisoned and isolated.” Gus looked away in shame. “The only thing keeping me from leaving… I don't want you to be alone.”

“Are we interrupting?” They heard a tomboyish female voice from above.

“It's the Rocket Cats.” Wally pointed above.

“Oh no, what did we do now?” Gus groaned.

“Nothing.” Violet said gently. “Can we come in?”

“Alright.” Gus and Wally gave in.

They opened the door and hopped inside.

“We debated this for a while.” Rose put her hand on her other arm. “But we want to make a deal with you.”

“We're listening.” The monkeys said in unison again.

“We have been given permission to help you choose a better path. You can stay with us for a month and try to be better.” Violet spoke.

“And believe me, it took a lot of convincing and I mean a lot, we even had to get a new license for this.” Rose added. Violet looked at her with slightly more annoyance. “The point is, we want to give you one more chance. One more.”

“Are you sure?” Wally asked tentatively.

“Why would you do that?” Gus questioned in a gloomy manner.

“Ever since what happened, YAY-OK has been feeling down.” Violet said honestly.

“Maybe this is a bad idea.” Gus shook his head quickly. “He may feel worse if he sees us.”

“Maybe, but it's only going to get worse if we don't at least try to fix it, together.” Rose told them bluntly.

“You'd really do that for us?” Wally asked.

“Honestly, like it or not, we're kind of family in some way.” Rose admitted. “You're like the brothers we never wanted, but will learn to accept.”

“You're really giving us a chance? This isn't some kind of trick for revenge?” Gus asked cautiously.

“Who hurt you?” Violet asked.

“Nobody… Unless you count my grandma, but she only hurt me and that's a long story.” Gus shuddered. Violet and Rose frowned and turned to each other.

YAY-OK looked at the picture on the wall, one of the monkeys making bunny ears with their fingers behind him.

“We're back.” Rose announced.

“You two were talking a while, is everything okay?” YAY-OK asked.

“When you say… Okay?” Violet sheepishly grinned.

“Oh boy, what happened?” YAY-OK groaned.

“We brought someone back to the ship, we got complete permission from GASI to do this, but I'm not sure if you want to see each other yet.” Violet continued. They stepped apart from each other revealing the monkeys. Both of them quickly hid behind the jaguars again.

“Monkeys?” YAY-OK's eyes widened.

“Yeah, we've been given permission to help reform them.” Rose told him.

“I tried to do that for years.” YAY-OK told them. “You don't know what you're trying to do.”

“I know, but I always believed we should give someone a chance when they truly need it.” Violet said.

“True, just be careful.” YAY-OK warned the girls.

Gus and Wally quickly made their own beds, something they probably never did in their lives. Then they just laid on top of them, not even bothering to get under the covers. Then they saw the jaguars walk into the room. They grabbed the nearest books and tried to read them.

“Wally, that's Deep Space Dave, you're supposed to be studying.” Gus reminded him.

“Oh yeah.” Wally grabbed a book that said “Physics.” “Pie sicks sounds like something good monkeys would read.”

“And I have this sky-ence fiction book.” Gus read his upside down. “Sky-ence is something good and smart monkeys need to learn.”

“Oh, you've taken interest in my books.” Violet pointed out.

“We didn't know these were your books! We should have asked permission!!!” Wally breathed heavily through a paper bag.

“Woah, woah.” Rose sat next to him. “Calm down, we're not going to do anything to you.”

“We just want to be good monkeys.” Gus forced a smile. “We failed at being bad so… Maybe if we try really hard to never make a single mistake again…”

“You don't have to go that far.” Violet corrected.

“But we want to. We can be nice.” Wally tugged her shirt a little.

“I think you two need to cool off.” Rose said.

“Yes mam.” The monkeys obeyed and sat on the beds again.

That night, Gus started to sweat and groan in his sleep.

In the nightmare, he was standing in the middle of a dark hall, a spotlight shining on him, he could vaguely see everyone he ever knew, glaring daggers at him, even Wally.

“It's your fault I'm irredeemable! If you were a better brother and person, I could have been somebody!” Wally shouted.

“The truth is, I hate you both, I always have!” YAY-OK taunted.

“And we regret feeling sorry for you!” Rose and Violet snarled.

Gus shot up from his pillow.

“Are you alright?” Rose and Violet rushed in.

Gus looked over at Wally, who was curled up and sniffling, frozen in fear.

“I'm so sorry.” Gus's heart sank.

“It's going to be alright.” Violet whispered. “Want us to stay with you for a while?”

“Um… alright.” Gus moved over to Wally's bed next to him. Rose and Violet got into Gus's bed together.

“Night, you crazy boys.” Rose turned off the lamp as the four finally drifted to sleep.
