Day 2: Baggage

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Mary watched from the shop window in Meryton as her younger sisters bothered some of the militia as they were carrying some baggage for a new officer.  It made no difference to her.  She knew they were jealous of her now; Lydia had told her as much herself. But their mother was now quite happy with her. She had, after all, accepted the proposal of her cousin, and now she would be the first of her sisters to marry.

Jane and Elizabeth arguably had higher prospects and might marry soon enough, but Mary was the sister who was only ever described as “accomplished,” and so she had exceeded her mother’s expectations. Mr. Collins had returned to his home for a few weeks, and now it was time to take care of all the preparations for the upcoming wedding.

“Mary, dear,” her mother called from the corner of the shop. “What do you think of this fabric?”

Mary had no particular opinion on the fabric, if she were being honest, but her mother was so happy for her.

“It is lovely, Mother,” she said. “Do you think it will do?”

“I think it will look lovely on you,” she said, then lowering her voice. “I’m sure when your older sisters are married they will have something even finer, but this will be quite lovely on you.”
