Chapter Text
In a completely normal day for student Chuuya Nakahara, one might want to say, but truly and certainly its wasn’t, although it is perhaps the most important day witch will make his life take a 360 degrees turn, changing his whole life forever.
Firstly, it was not his decision. This was completely unavoidable as his big sister, Kouyou, moved to this another university, Yokohama University, to study together with her long-distance girlfriend Yosano. He wasn’t excited to hear the news, but also had nothing to lose by moving. After his childhood best friend, Shuji, ran away from home abandoning him and his family, he couldn’t feel any real connection towards any other kid at school or “friend” he made.
Therefore he agreed to go, thinking that it wouldn’t change anything.
He was a kind and polite kid and always have been with anyone he ever met, except his childhood friend, that was a completely different story of course, and except the bratty kids he often picked fights with. He loved his sister so the moving wasn’t so bad, he thought he could also pursue his education.
He didn’t want to worry his sister, but the truth is he got into a heated fight not too long ago, some punches at a bully for harassing another student who helped Chuuya once with his literature homework and so he protected him, ending up almost breaking the bully’s jaw, and since then the teachers and other students weren’t behaving that nicely around him, mostly avoiding him, changing schools would be the best decision for the time being.
The actual moving and carrying boxes an all their stuff was the easy part, now he was in front of the university, witch was huge with a wide main building and two smaller ones attached, not that colourful but it looked kind of fancy, surely not meant for less intellectual kids. At the entrance the principal, Fukuzawa, an older looking man with whitish long hair, wearing a solemn expression but not in an intimidating way.
“Welcome to our University, you must be Nakahara Chuuya, pleased to meet you.” A warm greeting, not completely unexpected. “Good morning sir” Chuuya thought about being as polite as possible with everyone in this school, not making the same mistakes this time.
“No need to be so polite, I’ll show you to your classroom for the first class and also- he reached for his pockets and handed him a paper- this will be your schedule from now on, some of your classmates have the same classes so you can ask them to guide you.” Fukuzawa continued.
In a comfortable silence, Fukuzawa showed him the class, not full yet, but more than half the seats were looking taken, more students standing and walking around the class or staying more at a single desk some standing some brought extra chairs.
“If I could have some of your attention,” Fukuzawa started waiting for the noise to decrease and for the silence to make way and then he carried on “ This will be your new classmate, please welcome him accordingly and show him the school. Have a good day.” and with that being said he left.
And now chuuya was left in front of the class with no professors and new people of his age. This is the awkward part. He took his bag and chose one of the back desks, one that wasn’t taken nor had any people around.
Looking around he was mostly met with normal faces, except one group.
Weird bangs kid, white hair, another weirdo with a lot of bandages on his neck, reminded him of Shuji, and some others but they seemed normal...other two red heads, a blonde, and another one with darker hair. The one with bandages kept looking at him. That was weirder...
Suddenly, the class door flung open, making a lousy sound witch caught everyone’s attention. A girl with short blue hair and a butterfly hair clip appeared and sent straight to Chuuya’s desk. She looked excited “You must be Chuuya, right? I’m Yosano.” So she was Kouyou’s girlfriend... she extended her hand waiting for a shake. Chuuya shook her hand “Yea I am.” Even more awkwardness.
That was until the bandaged kid interfered “Yosano! I didn’t knew you were able to come to our class.” He said smirking. “Oh shut it. You just wanted to sabotage Ranpo.” The bandage kid looked offended at that, raising a hand placing it over his chest making a overly sad expression. “Me? Ah, how you wound me, Yosano!” And then he looked at Chuuya. “Why haven’t you presented me to this beauty?”
Now chuuya was weirded out ‘What the fuck’s wrong with this kid’ he thought. Yosano was now exasperated “Dazai this is Chuuya, Chuuya this is Dazai. Please try to ignore him.” She looked at the time “Oh shoot I better go. See ya’ later!” And she stormed put of the class.
Chuuya and Dazai looked at each other. Intensely. Very intensely. “Greetings and welcome to our university my fellow academic peer! I’m Dazai Osamu, if you Haven’t taken notice.”
“I did take notice Yosano-san just told me who you are , and also why do you talk like that?”
“Like what?” he asked looking confused, titling his head like a confused kitten.
“Like a Victorian child.” Chuuya deadpanned.
For a moment it was silence until Dazai started laughing. “Such comic fella that you are!” he continued laughing. Instantly he stopped laughing and said with a more serious tone “I can speak normally I just don’t want to. I chose to embrace my whimsy, not like you other peasants.” He announced proudly.
Now Chuuya was laughing too “peasants? What’s this? Before Christ? The 19th century?”
The bell rang. They exchanged looks. “Wanna sit together?” “Sure.”
First class, math. Hirotsu was the math teacher, stoic and strict but also calm, explaining the formulas crystal clear, Chuuya always appreciated when teachers were that way, much like everyone else. Even if Chuuya just transferred in the middle of the school year, lucky him he was a bit forward with the subject, especially at math. Despite being known for his strength and his fighting tendencies, he was also smart. Not the outstanding genius, but much above average.
In the end, Chuuya decided to observe this class after pretending to write on his notebook. He let his pen falling on his notebook and laid back on his chair. His eyes took a peak towards Dazai, surprised to find him staring at Chuuya.
“What’ ya looking at?” he asked confused and low-key weirded out for the who knows what time since meeting this guy. His whole body facing Chuuya, one hand on the desk and the other one using it to rest his head on, placed under his chin, his pinkie finger nearly reaching his lower lip. “At a short Chihuahua.” Dazai said with a smirk.
“...What did you just call me you bandage freak!?” he yelled, aggravated. His anger diluted in a split second recalling where he was, and that is: in the middle of the class. Anxiety caught him off guard, well knowing how it feels. His temper is very limited, and he worked on holding it under control. Although in moments like this, when he behaved like this anywhere but his home, or by himself, he was deeply responsible and the teachers were not nice about it.
He imagined this new place was no different, waiting for the teacher to strike. He knew his temper would show eventually, but its the first day, first class for fuck’s sake.
“ Dazai-san, please stop harassing Nakahara-kun.” And he just carried on with his lesson.
‘oh...that was unexpected...” Chuuya thought. Dazai sitting next to him pouted and his position was matching Chuuya. However that occurred rapidly but after a brief moment, Dazai turned to Chuuya and said “Your temper is as short as you are.” Witch infuriated Chuuya farther. “Shut it bandaged waste.”
All Chuuya’s words did was entertain Dazai “And your insults are plenty creative!” He was smiling again. That annoying smirk. Familiar to Chuuya, but no memory of why that is.
“Bastard.” “Slug.” “Mackerel.” “Slimy slug.” “Filthy fish.” “Ginger.”
“That’s not an insult you stupid buffoon!”
Both were giggling. “Dazai-san, Nakahara-kun, I will not repeat myself a third time.”
“Yes sir.” They said at the same time. They looked in each others eyes deeply, only for mere seconds, “Stop copying me!” at the same time once again. They were about to start bickering, until-
“As much as I’m glad Nakahara-kun found himself a friend, Dazai-kun come and resolve this exercise, right now.” Chuuya looked at Dazai sighing and raising from his chair. Hirotsu gave him the marker and he started resolving the equation. Now that Chuuya took a closer look at it, that equation was not easy. Glancing at Dazai’s notebook, empty, he couldn’t know how to solve it.
Thus, he could not explain how Dazai was still writing, fluently and constantly, not pausing even to think about what to write. He just kept on writing. Two minutes later the equation was solved flawlessly. Judging by Hirotsu’s eyes and the soft smile showing on his face, it was obvious the equation was correct.
Hirotsu moved forward to Dazai taking the marker back “If you know this subject, that does not mean others know it too. I let you attend my classes knowing you’ll keep quiet. Please stay and refrain from making noise.” and so Dazai went to his seat.
“How did you write that so quick?” Chuuya asked surprised. “Oh well the x is-“ Dazai started but that wasn’t what Chuuya wanted to know “you know what I mean. How did you know how to solve it. You weren’t even paying attention!” Chuuya said exasperated. Dazai sighed “They moved me in some higher classes. I’m such a genius!” He said accentuating the last part.
‘Drama queen and a genius prodigy... perfect...’ Chuuya thought.
“I’m studying mainly literature right now.” Dazai added “I didn’t ask you..?” chuuya said before he could stop himself. Normally he isn’t acting like this, not with other kids at least. This Dazai kid was weird.
“Great comebacks also! I proclaim you my best friend!” Dazai said excited “You can’t tell someone to be your best friend...” Chuuya said irritated. “I can. Wanna go to the arcade later?” Chuuya looked at him weirdly but agreed nonetheless.
The rest if the lesson flew by easily with useless talk between the two. Chuuya found out Dazai was living on campus, Chuuya told him he was living with his sister, but for some reason a wave of strange nostalgia washed over him.
“See you later.” Was all Dazai said before going in the opposite direction after guiding Chuuya to his next class, biology.
As he opened the door, the teacher sitting at the desk was different in some measure from Hirotsu. He appeared more intimidating, certainly not as kind as Hirotsu. He looked around the class and decided to go take a seat next to some other ginger. Piercings, darker shade of orange than he had, probably dyed, perfect. “Hey. This seat taken?”
The ginger looked at him, then smiled. “It’s all yours bro! You must be the new kid! Nice to meet you name’s Tachihara.” He extended his hand towards Chuuya waiting for a shake. Chuuya shacked his hand and took the seat.
The bell rand once again. “Good morning students. I see a nee face among us, hello to you Nakahara-san, starting today I will be your biology teacher, you may call me Mori sensei.” Without further ado he started his lesson.
“What’s with him?” Chuuya whispered to Tachihara “I don’t know dude he’s always been like this none of us know why. There are a lot of rumours about that guy.” Chuuya wasn’t the one for gossip but occasionally he needed to know certain information to fit in. “What rumours?”
“He has 3 children and one of them supposedly our age studying at this school, and it’s said they’re all adopted.” Tachihara continued. “So he’s weird.” Chuuya concluded “Yup.”
By the end of the class he met Tachihara’s friends witch were sitting in the desk before theirs, Gin Akutagawa and her girlfriend Higuchi. They were cool, Chuuya enjoyed their company. Maybe all this moving wasn’t so bad after all.
The rest of the day he tagged along with his new friends. At the end of the classes, on his way home he saw Dazai with some other kids. He recognized Yosano, and the weird bangs kid. There was another one, tall blonde with glasses and a brunette with glasses as well.
He planed to go by them unnoticed.
“CHU-CHUUUU!” Dazai ran towards him. That nickname sounded so familiar, but at the moment he was preoccupied by not falling off when Dazai jumped him.
“HEY-“
“This is my best friend my dear acquaintances!” Dazai proudly announced the group. “You know Yosano, This one’s Ranpo, the best genius, “-he pointed to the brunette with glasses-“this one is Kunikida, he’s the group mom”-he pointed to the blonde one-“and this one”- he pointed to the weird bangs kid-“ is our dear Atsushi!”
If he got dragged into this might as well go with it. “Hi. I’m Chuuya.” He said awkwardly.
Ranpo grinned mischievously “Welcome to the group! Wanna hang out?” “Actually- me and chibi will go home!” Dazai turned around and dragged Chuuya with him. “You’ll get to know them later. Where are you staying?” Chuuya showed him the way. They walked together for a bit, in silence.
“Gimme your phone” Dazai said out of nowhere. Chuuya took his phone out, unblocked it, planning to ask why did he needed it first, but Dazai simply took it swiftly and stopped in place. “Hey- for what was that-“ Chuuya started, “Here.” Dazai gave his phone back “Also I’m going this way.” He turned to some alley “Bye bye chibi! See you tomorrow!” soon he disappeared from sight, leaving Chuuya alone with his phone.
When he looked down, Chuuya saw that Dazai put his phone number in his phone as “My best friend💗💗💗”.
One hell of a first day.
