December, Interrupted

Summary:

A Modern AU I got the idea for after listening to The Night We Met by Lord Huron and The 30th by Billie Eilish at 1 am. I don't quite know where I'm going to go with this. Tags will update as needed, relationships aren't the 'focus' of this fic, but they are there. Please don't read if you get triggered by mentions/acts of self-injury and suicidality. Eating disorders might also crop up, I don't know yet. Have a lovely day <3

Chapter 1: December 9th, 2008, Konoha Part 1

Chapter Text

Konohagakure

 December 9th, 2008

Kakashi Hatake

The last thing Kakashi processed before the world tilted on its axis was the sound of brakes squealing and metal crunching.  His head was ringing as he tried to reorient himself to the world.

Was that sound coming from him?

No, surely not.

Kakashi pressed a hand to his forehead to see what had splattered wet across his face, and when he pulled it back, his hand had a distinctive red smear across the palm.

Wait, was he bleeding?

He tried to turn his head to look at Rin, who'd been in the back seat with Obito and that's when he felt a drip. Except, wasn't blood supposed to drip down his face instead of up?

That's when his brain started screaming at him, and he, at least mostly, understood what was happening. Kakashi fumbled for his seat-belt, now halfway jammed by the force of impact before managing to get it to come loose. Once it had released, Kakashi fell about 2 inches to the roof of the car-- or, more accurately, the temporary floor. As Kakashi met the hard metal, pain bloomed out against the right side of his head.

But wait, he'd forgotten about Obito and Rin again.

Kakashi turned his head, where were they again? He had to turn it further to the right than he liked. Now the blood was cooperating with gravity, and, he assumed that was why he couldn't see from his right eye.

Kakashi's gaze landed on the back-seat again, Obito was caught between two pieces of glinting metal, he wasn't awake. Rin on the other hand was awake, but stuck, her seat-belt had jammed all the way and the rear airbag had deployed, effectively keeping her, firmly, in her seat.

As Kakashi looked at Rin, a thought occurred.

Was she the one making that noise-- that wet, high pitched keening?

Her eyes were puffy and red, and her mouth was open after all.

It took a moment longer for Kakashi to glance away, but as he did, he finally saw Minato in the driver's seat. Minato was awake, moving, trying to speak to all of the young teens. Kakashi couldn't parse what he was attempting to say though. The words muddled together, twisting in on each other until they were indecipherable.

Kakashi didn't have the mental energy to try and decide on what Minato was saying.

When he looked back to Rin and Obito-- Obito still seemingly unresponsive and limbs twisted unnaturally, he decided what needed to happen.

But, Kakashi found as he fumbled for his dad's old Nokia 8810, that the impact had busted it apart.

Dammit. The faint ringing that he'd been hearing since the car rolled suddenly swelled, drowning out even Rin's cries and Minato's desperate attempts to get a response from Obito and Kakashi. Absently, Kakashi noticed his fingers had started cooling, but before he could even finish the thought, the grey of the car's roof, now red-stained, came rushing towards his face. Kakashi vaguely wondered if this was what it felt like to die before the world went dark.

When Kakashi woke next, sensation didn't return all at once. His head still hurt, and now, apparently, so did his eye. When did that happen? Oh yeah, nevermind. Kakashi vaguely registered a pressure, steadily being held over his legs and wrists alike. There was something in his--

"Hey, the kid's awake!" Was suddenly half shouted in the small space Kakashi found himself in as he opened his eyes-- or, rather, eye. Though, he couldn't exactly parse out any specific shapes yet, just the vague, blurry outline and colors of two people and objects.
One of the people, he had brown hair, leaned forward, "Can you hear us? Can you tell us your name? The date?" he asked, laying a cool hand on Kakashi's arm.

Kakashi heard the words, yes, but it took him a moment longer for his brain to catch up enough to reply, and when he went to? At first all he did was work his throat dryly.
"......Ka...Kakashi....Hatake..." He finally managed, swallowing against the grit in his throat, "....D..M.....2008...?" Kakashi's thoughts felt muddied as he answered, sure he knew his name, but, he couldn't figure out if it was May or December. Part of that, to be fair, was because his body couldn't decide if it wanted to be cold or hot.

The other person, a lady who seemed to have platinum blonde, box-dyed hair, 'tsked' under her breath at Kakashi's answer before grabbing a radio and making it buzz to life.
"This is team 2, en route to Konoha Memorial with an adolescent male, possible TBI, left eye caught shrapnel, possible fractures and internal bleeding, BP is 100 over 85, resp rate is 24, heart rate is 115, copy," She spoke into the radio before it buzzed back to life, Kakashi didn't catch the reply, he vaguely heard her reply to the radio again with the words, "car accident" threaded in....

Wait.

Where are Obito? And Rin? And Minato?

Kakashi almost felt his heart drop, well, he actually might've if the beeping noise to his left meant anything.
The brown haired EMT frowned, but quickly hid it, resting a hand on Kakashi's hair, "Hey hey- You're alright, breathe Kakashi..." He muttered, just loud enough for Kakashi to hear, just quiet enough to not let his tone read as urgent.

"...Wh... Where are.....they....?" Kakashi managed to get out, his breathing trying to run away from him at the same time he spoke, he registered, faintly, that his vision had blurred out again.
"You're friends? They're in separate ambulances, they're still alive," The EMT replied, scanning Kakashi's vitals again before turning his attention back to the teen, "Hey, I'm gonna need you to try and take some deep breaths, can you do that for me?"
