Work Text:
Amane glared with contempt at the lunch of the day. A hamburger. How inconsiderate. Didn’t the warden—or whoever made the food—know she couldn’t eat that?
She sighed, pulled the top bun off, and carefully scraped the patty off with a knife to avoid staining her hand with the forbidden food as much as she could help it.
“Huh? You’re just leaving out the meat? That’s strange for a kid.”
She turned towards the voice to find a certain Kajiyama Fuuta, who was clearly in the midst of pulling the lettuce out of his own burger. “Really, Fuuta-san? Are you going to judge me when you are doing the same?”
His grumbly expression cracked for a split second. “H-huh? No! This is nothing like what you’re doing!”
Amane smirked. “Could it be… Are you unable to eat vegetables, even though you are an adult?”
Embarrassment crept up on Fuuta’s face as he stammered. “What- What do you think I am, a rabbit?” He stood up and jabbed a finger at her. “You should eat meat, or else you won’t grow bigger.”
Just then, Shidou passed them by, towering over Fuuta by a head. Amane couldn’t help but snicker.
“Oh, don’t give me that!” Fuuta complained.
Once Shidou made his way around the table, he placed another plate in front of Amane.
A plate of fluffy pancakes.
“Shidou-san, what is this?” Amane asked.
He smiled placidly. “A pancake.”
In turn, she narrowed her eyes and glared at him. “I know that."
"It's a treat for you since you're always eating so well.”
"I meant, what are you doing?”
“My job.”
“Whatever this is, it can’t be your job.”
“It is my duty to spoil children just the right amount.” Shidou added a scoop of ice cream on top of the confection.
Amane recoiled.
Spoil. Spoil.
Is it okay if I spoil myself?
No! I'm sorry for breaking the rules!
I swear I won't-
"Amane, are you okay?" Shidou asked, giving her a pitying gaze.
"No!" she screamed, flipping the plate of pancakes into his face.
As she stomped out of the room, she heard the two men talking about what a weird child she was. Ugh, they were gossiping about her.
Why did the doctor have to ruin the day?
"Kajiyama-kun, if I may ask…"
Fuuta turned to find Shidou standing over him awkwardly, meal plate in hand. "What is it? Here to make sure I'm not tossing out my vegetables?"
Shidou shook his head. "I was just wondering… Do you eat natto?"
"Huh?" Fuuta blinked. "Yeah. I mean, I don't have any strong feelings about it either way."
"Then, would you mind…" Without finishing the question, Shidou took a seat next to him. Was it really such a hard question to ask? Ridiculous.
"I'll take it. Here, you can have my spinach instead." Fuuta scraped the natto and spinach between the plates. While he did, he could have sworn he saw some movement out of the corner of his eye.
Oh no. This was terrible timing.
With a sigh, he turned to face the little figure on the other side. "It's not what you're thinking, okay?"
Amane stared back at him with wide, curious eyes. "You're not tossing out your vegetables, are you?" she asked.
"Of course not! Didn't you just hear me?"
"Then… are you taking Shidou-san's food? Gluttony is a sin, you know."
"That's not it either!" Fuuta stood up and pointed at Shidou. "This pathetic sap can't stomach natto, so he asked for a trade." The insult elicited some narrow eyes from the unfortunate target, but he didn't argue back.
Amane was quick to scold him. "Fuuta-san, it's not nice to call other people names."
He responded with a huff.
Then she turned around to Shidou. "And you… You constantly push pancakes under my nose, no matter how many times I refuse, but even you have food you cannot eat. You're such a pathetic hypocrite, you old sap."
