Rebirth of Battra: The Destructive Adversary (バトラ:破壊魔獣復活)

Summary:

A standalone spin-off story taking place in the universe of Rebirth of Mothra. In the Reiwa era, Japan's prosperity is threatened by Earth's awakening. Decades of peace maintained by the Elias sisters, Moll and Lora, and Mothra Leo, the child and heir of the late Mothra, end as the planet triggers a total reboot. Battra returns from the Arctic to judge the modern world, accompanied by the Vespers, a miniature trio of armoured priests executing the planet's will. The eldest, Vane, and youngest, Kael, telepathically link with Battra to dismantle industrial society.

However, the middle brother, Mordun, is denied the link and descends into a state of radicalised fury. Viewing his brothers as weak, he seeks to bypass the Vesper's code to unleash Battra's full, genocidal wrath. A group of local children—led by Kenjiro Akizuki and Filipino foreigner Mateo De Leon, who recognises the Vesper's ancient tribal patterns—become unlikely diplomats. Realising the Vespers' "divine language" shares roots with his ancestors' chants, Mateo and the children must unite the Elias and the Vespers before Battra's judgment leads to extinction.

Notes:

Ever since the canonical lore that Mothra and Leo have twin fairy priestesses to communicate telepathically on their behalf, I mused what if Battra has his own fairies, depicted as twin (or triplet for the Elias) brother priests who mediate Moth Kaiju to bring destruction and conquer the land, thus serving as the genderbend counterparts to the Shobijin. The fairy brothers can also sing in Austronesian languages to command their tyrannical God.

Chapter 1: Introduction: Cast of Characters

Chapter Text

Cast of Characters

The Wardens of Judgment (The Vespers/ヴェスパース)
The ancient male fairy priests of Battra were born from obsidian cocoons. They serve as the “Dark Counterparts” to the Elias (Shobijin/小美人). They stand 15cm taller than the Elias, emphasising their imposing, warrior-like stance in service to Battra.

  • Vane (ヴェイン): The oldest, stoic leader and “Voice of Law.” He wears matte-black chitin armour etched with Kalasag (Shield) patterns. Unlike the jagged energy lines of his brother Mordun, Vane’s markings are geometric and solid, symbolising his role as the unmovable object and the protector of the Code. He seeks balance, not necessarily extinction.
  • Mordun (モルドン): The middle and radicalised mutineer. Denied the telepathic bond, his resentment has turned into zealotry. His armour is etched with jagged Kidlat (lightning) lines. He plots to hijack Battra’s will, ensuring no human survives. Unlike his brothers, who ride a dragonfly, Mordun rides a miniature rhino beetle-like Kaiju named Tsunokage.
  • Kael (ケイル): The youngest and “Heart of the Swarm.” He is sensitive to the Earth’s physical pain. His armour features Pako (fern) motifs. He is the most likely to bridge the gap between the Vesper and the human children.

The Guardians of Mercy (The Elias/エリアス)
The legendary sisters who have protected the Earth through the Heisei and Reiwa eras, serving as priestesses (excluding Belvera) to Mothra and then to her offspring, Leo. They are also the incarnations of the Shobijin (小美人, Small Beauties).

  • Moll (モル): The middle and wisest Elias. She recognises that Battra’s return is a symptom of a dying planet. She attempts to mentor Vane in the ways of mercy before Mordun’s mutiny consumes them all. Moll and Lora ride their miniature moth, Fairy Mothra, for travel.
  • Lora (ロラ): The youngest and emotional anchor of the sisters. She works closely with the children, specifically Mateo, to translate the Earth’s ancient feelings into something humanity can understand. Lora and Moll ride their transport, Fairy Mothra.
  • Belvera (ベルベラ): The oldest but rogue sister. Riding her mechanical dragon Garugaru, she initially sides with Mordun, attracted to his strength, but eventually realises his path leads to a world where even she has no place.

The Divine Beasts (The Kaiju/怪獣)

  • Battra (バトラ, The Black Moth): The Earth’s Immune System. A massive, jagged insectoid god that fires purple Prism Beams. In the Reiwa era, he views high-tech cities as digital rot to be purged.
  • Mothra Leo (モスラ・レオ, Eternal Form): The peak evolution of the Mothra lineage. As the only child and successor of the late Mothra, he is a multi-coloured, divine protector. While he loves humanity, he is physically weakened by the “Project Gaea” energy spikes, making him dependent on the Elias’s songs.
  • Godzilla (新生ゴジラ): A brief, terrifying cameo. However, this Godzilla isn’t the original but an adoptive offspring, initially named Godzilla Junior (ゴジラ・ジュニア), who is revived using his deceased father’s irradiated cells. He is an ancient predator that belongs to neither the Elias nor the Vespers. His presence represents a force that even the gods of the Earth cannot control.

The Supporting Human Characters

  • Mateo De Leon (マテオ・デ・レオン, 11): A Filipino foreigner in Japan. He is the “Linguistic Bridge.” He is the first to recognise the Mandarigma warrior marks on the Vesper’s armour and realises their “ancient tongue” is a primal root of Tagalog.
  • Kenjiro Akizuki (秋月健次郎, 12): A tech-savvy Japanese boy and insect enthusiast. He uses his drone-flying skills to help the Vesper navigate the “dead zones” of the city where their dragonflies cannot fly.
  • Yumi Akizuki (秋月由実, 14): Kenjiro’s older sister. She works as a student intern for “Project Gaea,” providing the group with the technical data needed to find the facility’s “kill switch.
  • Aiko Takashima (高島あい子, 10): A highly sensitive and observant child who lives near the area affected by the toxic runoff of Project Gaea. Unlike the others who focus on technology or language, Aiko is an empath—she feels the Earth’s physical pain. She is the first to directly sense the inner conflict of Vane and Kael, providing the non-verbal, emotional intelligence the group needs to navigate the Vesper’s fractured judgment.
  • Hiroshi Sato (佐藤 浩史, 13): A highly intellectual, teenage boy with a passion for forgotten history, urban legends, and the minutiae of the Heisei-era kaiju battles. He is the group’s researcher, capable of quickly cross-referencing obscure local legends and ancient Japanese texts (found in temple archives or forgotten museums) with current events.
  • Doctor Ren Ishida (石田 蓮博士): The lead Researcher at the Special G-Unit (SGU) and the Last Listener. He is a former protégé of the retired psychic researcher, Miki Saegusa (三枝 未希), since childhood, having studied at the Psychic institution during the Heisei period. Unlike Miki, who was often used as a tool by the military, Ren is a scientist first. He operates out of a mobile command centre called the Psychic-Telemetry Lab.
