    Summary

Samuel is a priest in a small eighteenth-century village. His life was shaped by familiar gestures: prayers, confessions, care for his parishioners and for his beloved son. He had grown accustomed to being a support for others and rarely allowed himself doubt — faith had long ceased to be a choice for him, becoming instead a natural state of being.
One winter, a particular man appears in his village… Nathan is not one to keep his distance: he spoke to the priest simply, without reverent caution, laughed where others lowered their voices, and remained close not for instruction or counsel, but for the sake of simple conversation. In time, he became for Samuel someone beside whom he could be not a pastor, but an ordinary man, even as he resisted this change.
But one day Samuel begins to feel beside his friend a strange warmth, the like of which he had not known for many years… it was gentle, comforting, and too carefully enveloping, not allowing him at once to discern the sin within it… A sin destined to wholly alter the righteous life of the pastor.
