“I love you too!” He felt his mouth dry, his stomach hurting with tight knots that made him want to throw up. “I’m sure I’ve loved you since I joined you in that swing set, Will.”
Warm tears ran down his cheeks, he didn’t even know when they had slipped out, he didn’t even care, not when Will was looking at him with such disbelieving eyes that it hurt. The beautiful hazel fogged by unshed and too much shedded tears.
“You don’t mean that.”

Or, Mike understands why Will avoiding him hurts much more than breaking up with El. He’s not sure what to do about it, he just knows that he needs his best friend back. And if to achieve that he has to bury his feelings in the depths of his heart, so be it.
