Chapter 1
“They’re so small.” gasps the man as he’s holding two tiny infants in each of his arms.
The redhead beside him is all up in his space so that she can get a closer look at the twins. As much as she wants to hold one, her boyfriend insisted on holding both first while she was in the bathroom. “Hurry up, Ash! I want to hold them!”
Chuckling, Ash is still mesmerized by the tiny beings. “Take my pic first, and then I’ll give you one.”
“I already did.” Of course she would. Mew. Seeing him holding the babies makes her ovaries tingle, so she obviously snapped many pictures already.
“Pi.” Pikachu sweatdrops at the pair. He’s sitting on the armrest next to his trainer so that he can get a good look at the new additions.
“Now it’s your turn to have one for them to play with.” grins the father of the babies, which causes his best friends to blush immensely.
“Uh. I just became the Monarch, Brock.” Ash stammers.
“Yeah, and I just became an Elite Four member.” his equally flushed girlfriend managers out as she takes a baby from Ash.
Rolling his eyes, Brock knowingly tells them, “Ash, that was 3 years ago.” He then faces the redhead. “And Misty, that was 2 years ago.”
After Ash became the Monarch, Misty felt compelled to rise up and do better too. Thus, she applied to Agatha’s vacant Elite Four position once Agatha retired. This happened to be the year after Ash became the Monarch. Ash came to support his first traveling companion. The man had no worries at all. He knew Misty would beat the other Elite Four members and earn her rightful place beside them.
Due to the celebrations that day, Ash stuck around to congratulate his friend. One thing led to another, and they ended up confessing their feelings for each other. Now, almost 2 years later, they are Kanto’s favorite celebrity couple. The two are still going strong and very much in love.
Because Misty is an Elite Four member, Daisy came back to manage the Cerulean City Gym full time alongside her husband Tracey Sketchit. The two were looking for a place to settle down. As much as Misty’s sisters do not enjoy battling, they would rather keep the gym in their family. Fortunately, Tracey helps out a lot to maintain the gym’s reputation and responsibilities. It’s still not up to the reputation that Misty left it at, but it’s at least much better than she got the gym at.
“Shouldn’t you be checking on Lucy.” Misty narrows her eyes at her oldest friend. She’s trying to redirect the attention away from her and Ash. At 23 years old, everyone constantly asks when the two will get married and settle down. The couple still feels like they have a lot more to accomplish before they put down roots, but they’re not against it.
“She’s fine.” Brock’s wife had a tough labor and has been recovering in their room. Ash and Misty did greet her.
Brock and Lucy got married a few years ago around the same time Ash and Misty started dating. Brock has been dating her for years though. Now, they have welcomed their twins to the world. The twins are about a month old. Ash and Misty didn’t visit for a while because the twins were still in the hospital due to being slightly premature. They were finally healthy enough to come home last week, which is when Brock gave his friends the okay to visit.
With his friends preoccupied with his newborns, Brock decides to listen to Misty’s words. Lucy has the Pokemon with her, but Brock is a doting husband too. Besides, there’s something he and Lucy need to talk to his best friends about. Brock assists his wife with standing and follows her closely as she walks to the living room. Lucy can still do a lot on her own because she’s recovered well. Brock, though, is always so careful with her.
They’re able to enter the living room and sit down unnoticed because Ash and Misty are still gushing over the babies. “It’s good to see that they like kids.” Lucy notes to her husband as she watches his friends.
“They’re great with them too!” Brock recalls watching his friends interact with kids, which is quite often because they’re famous and have many young fans.
Leaning on her husband, Lucy asks, “Should we interrupt them now?” Ash and Misty had just arrived an hour ago, but the twins were asleep. Thus, the young couple can finally hold them now that the babies are awake. Being from Kanto and Brock living in Hoenn, Ash and Misty plan to stay the weekend. Despite their busy schedules, they wouldn’t miss meeting Brock’s babies.
Brock nods and then clears his throat obnoxiously loud. It doesn’t work, so he does it again, and this does work in gaining his friends’ attention. The Kanto couple are surprised to see Lucy there. “Oh, hey, Lucy.” Ash smiles.
“How are you feeling?” Misty asks warmly.
“Much better. But don’t worry about me.” Lucy waves her hand to brush their concern away. “We actually wanted to ask you two something.”
Misty and Ash tense up because they’re preparing for the questions everyone asks: marriage, babies, future, etc. Why won’t people just stay out of their relationship and let them live it like how they want to? “Uh…” Misty would normally tell Brock off, but she won’t do that to Lucy. “Sure?” As annoying as those questions are, it’s not like Ash and Misty can’t thwart them off.
Brock’s warm smile alleviates some of Misty’s and Ash’s worries. “We wanted to ask if you two would be Jade’s and Aspen’s godparents.”
Oh. That was it? The young couple blink in silence as they process their older friend’s request. So it’s nothing to do with them getting married and having kids of their own. That’s refreshing. Ash, though, inquires, “What does that mean?” What is a godparent?
Sighing, Misty explains to her oblivious boyfriend, “It means we’re basically the twins’ guardians if anything were to happen to Lucy and Brock.”
“Is something happening to you guys?” Ash panics.
Now, Brock and Misty facepalm, which causes Lucy to speak, “No. Brock and I are fine.”
“It’s just a what if, Ash.” Misty can’t believe she loves this man.
“And it’s also an excuse for you two to visit them more often.” Brock admits with a sly grin now that he’s done being embarrassed for his friend. He was ecstatic when he found out his best friends were finally dating. About damn time. Thus, it’s a dream of his to have them be his children’s godparents. “So?” Brock and Lucy expectantly watch the young couple.
Ash glances down at small Jade in his arms. Her dark brown hair with red strands is a perfect blend of her parents. He meets her innocent brown eyes where he returns her little pure toothless smile. Beside him, Misty is too gazing down at the baby boy in her arms. He dons Brock’s spiky hair and darker skin, but he has Lucy’s deep red eyes and black hair. There is an equally deep red streak of hair in his head.
“Yeah.” The Kanto couple speak at the same time, surprising even them. Thus, it causes them to look at each other. Brown meets blue where they give each other one of their many loving looks.
“We’ll do it.” Ash states. Misty’s fierce gaze tells him all he needs to know. Although they’re not ready for children of their own right now, the two will love these twins like their own. Ash could already feel how much he loves them as soon as he held them. It’s much different than when he’s held other babies in the past. Plus, Ash cannot see him doing this with anyone else except for the woman he can’t tear his eyes away from.
“It’ll be an honor.” Misty too feels the same as Ash. They’re going to love these babies so much. Well, that was already a given, but knowing that they’ll be the godparents means even more to her. She’s happy to get to do this beside Ash.
Seeing as how they’ve been forgotten again, Lucy and Brock can only smile at each other. Their friends are too infatuated with one another, which Brock is happy for. After all of these years, Ash and Misty are still very much in love. Despite only seeing each other monthly, the young couple has made it work. Brock will enjoy watching his family grow alongside his best friends.
4 Years Later
“Mama Misty, look!” exclaims the 4 year old as she thrusts a drawing on screen.
“Wait your turn, Jade!” Huffs her brother in annoyance because he was just talking to Misty.
Giggling, Misty watches the twins bicker while looking at Jade’s drawing. There are 6 stick figures and a yellow ball with some spikes coming out of it. Two of the stick figures are small, which Misty knows represents the twins. She can make out two taller stick figures as the twins’ parents, Brock and Lucy. Then Misty spots her orange hair on another taller fiure. The last figure has the yellow spiky ball by him, so Misty fights her frown. She knows who those two figures are supposed to be. “That’s a nice drawing, Jade.”
“See! Mama Misty likes it, Aspen!” Jade sticks her tongue out at her brother.
“Jade, it’s not nice to do that.” Misty sweatdrops at the bickering siblings.
“Yeah. Stop being mean, Jade!” Aspen narrows his eyes at her.
“Okay.” Jade listens to her godmother.
Aspen now looks at Jade’s drawing where he excitedly asks Misty, “Where’s Papa Ash?”
Misty’s lips purse; though, this is not a new question for her. The twins ask about their estranged godfather all the time.According to Brock, they see Ash maybe once per year, and he never sticks around too long. It’s as if he just drops by for an hour or two out of obligation. Brock has to force Ash to stay for a meal.
Is Misty surprised that Ash doesn’t see his godchildren much? No. If anything, she’s surprised that he sees them yearly. That negligent man-child in his own selfish world. Misty sees the twins every few months, and she calls them often. No way will she be a deadbeat godmother to these adorable innocent children.
Thus, it pains her to have to speak nicely about him to the twins, “He’s off saving the world.” It’s how she always answers them.
And like usual, their eyes open wide in admiration at their superhero godfather. “Papa Ash is cool!” Aspen exclaims while his sister excitedly nods beside him.
“What about Mama Misty?” Misty feigns being offended that they’re not proud of her. On the contrary, she knows the twins are very proud of her too. She is an esteemed Elite Four member. It’s just they don’t see or hear from Ash enough, so they’re always amazed hearing about him.
“I think Mama Misty is the coolest!” Jade shouts.
“Yeah! Mama Misty is awesome!” Aspen agrees.
Misty can only smile at the sweet innocent children. How Ash can neglect them, Misty will never understand. It’s a good thing she hates that stupid Monarch. “Aw. Thanks, babies! I think you’re both so cute and amazing too!”
“I not baby!” Aspen furrows his brows, which further makes Misty giggle at how cute he is.
“Yeah! We no baby!” huffs the little girl.
Fortunately for Misty, the twins’ father comes to her rescue, “Aspen, Jade, go put your shoes on. We have to go to Uncle Forest’s now.”
“Okay!” the twins nod obediently. “Bye bye, Mama Misty!” they shout before running off.
Now, on screen, is Misty’s oldest friend who gives her a warm smile. “Sorry about that.” His twins can talk anyone’s ear off forever.
“I didn’t get to say bye to them.” Misty sweatdrops. Those twins are a bundle of energy.
“It’s fine.” Brock chuckles. “I overheard them interrogating you, so I had to help out my best friend.”
Misty rolls her eyes because she knows where this is leading. “I can handle a pair of 4 year olds.”
“They miss you both. You and Ash.”
“Brock-”
“I know.” The man defensively puts his hands up. “You guys broke up on bad terms and don’t talk anymore so to stop asking about him.”
No one knows why Ash and Misty broke up 3 years ago when they were so in love the year prior. The twins only got to spend their first birthday with both of their godparents together before the breakup. Since then, Ash and Misty have made it a point to not see one another. Ash is off doing Monarch stuff all over the world while Misty is still at the Indigo Plateau.
“The twins just ask about him all the time.” Brock sighs.
“That’s not my problem, Brock. We broke up. I don’t know where he is anymore, and I don’t care.” She’s sick of people bringing up her ex. It’s been 3 years for Mew’s sake!
“I know. I just hate that my kids are hurting.”
“That’s a conversation between you and Ash. Not me.”
“I know.” Brock gives her an apologetic smile. “I guess I just needed to vent a little.” When Brock asked his best friends to be the godparents for his children, he expected them both to be present. Ash’s yearly visit isn’t enough. He doesn’t need to visit as much as Misty, but at least call the twins more. Ash never calls. The twins barely recognize him or remember him when he does visit. Fortunately, they do know him as the man with the cute cuddly Pikachu.
“Sorry, Brock, but you know I hate talking about that idiot. Enjoy your trip. I’ll be sure to help Forest and Joy watch the twins.” Misty can’t be mad at her friend, but she is annoyed about this constant conversation.
“Thanks, Misty.” Brock is grateful that Misty is his friend and the godmother to her kids.
Lucy’s sister, Barbara, is taking Brock and Lucy on a cruise in Alola for the next two weeks. Thus, Brock’s brother Forest offered to watch his niece and nephew. Misty cannot commit to a full two weeks due to the Indigo Plateau responsibilities, but at least the Pewter City Gym is close enough for her to help Forest.
Forest is married to Pewter’s Nurse Joy. They’re expecting their first child in a few months. The rest of Brock’s siblings are traveling all over the world, so Forest and Misty are the only stable people to watch the twins overnight. Nevertheless, Forest and Misty are too busy for a constant two week stint, so the two will be coordinating alongside Forest’s wife on caring for the twins. If stupid Ash Ketchum was still involved, Delia’s would be the best place for the twins. Delia has ample free time.
A Few Days Later
The redhead returns from one of the many league missions. Usually, the Elite Four alternate the smaller missions. Rarely do they all need to go out for a mission together. This last mission was Misty’s turn. It had to do with the water anyway, so it was fitting that she went. Even if it wasn’t her turn, she’s sure she would’ve been asked to go. Misty doesn’t mind it though because it’s much better than doing paperwork.
Her life feels a lot more fulfilling now that she’s an Elite Four member. As much as she enjoyed being the Cerulean City Gym Leader, it was just constant battling of trainers of all levels and then constant paperwork. As an Elite Four member, however, she battles less challengers. The ones she does battle are very tough. The battles are not boring, like some could be as a gym leader. And she has less paperwork, and she gets to travel to areas for missions. It’s a very fulfilling career.
This current mission was around the rough wild waves around the Seafoam Islands. Team Rocket was up to no good by stirring up the environment with their cruel Pokemon testing there while they were also trying to capture Articuno again. Fortunately, Misty arrived just in time to stop them. She’s also grown a lot stronger since joining the Elite Four. Misty truly feels like a water Pokemon master now.
Due to being on a mission, she left her personal pokenav at home in her Indigo Plateau apartment. Each Elite Four member and the champion have a business pokenav for missions. The Elite Four consists of Lorelei, Bruno, Lance, and Misty. The Champion is Red Aka. Misty is still the newest member despite being there for 5 years now.
Because she arrived back rather early in the day, Misty opts to finish her paperwork on the mission. She had spent the journey back working on it. Sitting at her desk, the woman prepares to open her laptop again when she spots her personal pokenav. She has a lot of missed calls and messages, but these are usually her sisters. Misty does want to check in case Brock’s twins called her because she is an active godmother.
Like Misty expected, there are a decent amount of texts and calls from her sisters. Mainly Daisy who is still learning more on how to run the gym properly. However, Misty has a lot of missed calls from the Pewter City Gym and Forest. The Pewter gym has its own landline. There are a lot of unread texts on her pokenav, but rather than going through those, she decides to call the Pewter Gym first. The twins must be wanting to talk to her, and she feels bad she was too busy to talk to them the past few days. Nevertheless, she plans to go visit them this weekend, which is only a few days away.
The call goes to voicemail, so Misty assumes that Forest must be busy with the twins or in a battle. Brock usually leaves Croagunk and Sudowoodo to help babysit. Misty then calls Forest’s cell, and she is also sent to voicemail. Well, they’ll most likely call her later, so she chooses to work on filing the rest of this form.
Less than an hour later, her pokenav rings to break her out of her focus. Seeing that it’s Forest calling, Misty figures the twins want to ask her to hop on a video call with her. She answers the call, “Hey, Forest.”
“Misty, thank Mew you’re okay!” comes the relieved voice on the other end.
“Uh. Yeah. These missions are nothing.” If the mission is more dangerous, then the League would’ve sent more help and not just her. She figures Forest knew she was on a mission due to her lack of a response to his texts and calls.
“You were at the Seafoam Islands.” Forest tells her, which makes Misty nod.
“How do you know that?”
“When I couldn’t reach you, I called the League, and they told me.” Why would Forest care where she is? Yeah, the twins may be asking, but Forest would normally just tell them that Misty is on a mission. They don’t need to know where she’s going.
“Uh. Well, I’m back. I was going to stop by in a few d-”
“Misty.” Forest interrupts her. Why does he sound so hesitant?
“Yeah, Forest?”
“Do you not know?”
“Not know what?” Why is her heart racing at Forest’s words. What could she not know about?
Forest takes a deep steady breath. Or at least, as steady as he can make it. “There was an attack…” Then Misty hears it. The croak in Forest’s voice. No. What could it be?
“Are the twins okay?” An attack? Where? At the gym? Why hadn’t she heard about it?
Shaking his head, Forest finds his voice again; though, it is small, “In ocean near Alola.”
“No!” Misty shouts as she immediately stands up from her seat. “No, Forest, don’t you fucking tell me any more!” There’s only one reason why Forest would speak to her about this in this tone. There’s only one reason, and Misty does not want to hear it. “No!”
“Misty.” croaks out the man again, and Misty can hear his sniffles, which confirms everything she doesn’t want to believe. “I can’t do this alone.” His pregnant wife. His twin niece and nephew. His brother and sister-in-law. Forest is falling apart.
Taking in a very deep breath, Misty feels a few tears slip down her face. As much as she wants to cry and scream some more, she understands what Forest is saying. Someone else needs them more right now. Well, some two little innocent children need them right now. “I’m on my way, Forest. Hang in there.”
