Measured in Heartbeats

Summary:

“Am I too heavy?” Harris asked nervously, Troy felt him shift his weight and lift his hips slightly as he spoke.

Troy didn’t say anything for a minute, instead he furrowed his brow and opened his eyes to look at him, confused by Harris’s question.

“What?”

Notes:

Discussions of weight gain and feeling insecure but nothing too in-depth or hateful.

Work Text:

Troy was sure that he’d never been happier in his life than in this moment.

Sat against the headboard of their bed, in his pyjamas with Harris curled up in his lap trading slow kisses and gentle conversation. Chiron sprawled out at the end of the bed, exhausted from the excitement of having Troy home.

Harris too happy to have Troy back after days apart. He whispered something incoherent against Troy’s mouth and laughed when Troy rolled his eyes before their lips met again and Harris melted into it.

There was no heat, no demand for more from either of them. Both content to sit comfortably and enjoy the warmth that had filled the room. Content to just kiss and hold one another until exhaustion really took over.

It had been almost a year, almost a year of Troy openly sharing his love and admiration for Harris. Of rushing home after away games to be with Harris and Chiron, almost a year of text chains and phone calls, memes and gifs and Harris’s silly Instagram posts.

Troy still wasn’t sure how he had managed to get this lucky.

All that anger and heartbreak that had come from the trade, from the fall out of Kent and Adrian. The anger and resentment from his farther and the pressure from the league. All swallowed by his love for Harris, soothed by the affection and care that Harris smothered him with.

Troy didn’t want it to end; he wanted to hold Harris in his arms for the rest of the night. The rest of his life if Harris allowed.

Feeling emotional Troy shifted slightly to bring Harris even closer, sighing softly into their kiss as he repositioned his hands on Harris’s hips to angle his body better before pressing against the small of his back to bring him even closer.

Troy expected him to melt into it, to make a teasing remark about Troy being needy but instead Troy felt him tense up and felt him break their kiss and take a shaky breath.

“Am I too heavy?” Harris asked nervously, Troy felt him shift his weight and lift his hips slightly as he spoke.

Troy didn’t say anything for a minute, instead he furrowed his brow and opened his eyes to look at him, confused by Harris’s question.

“What?”

“Am I too heavy, do you want me to move?” Harris asked, forcing a laugh.

Troy hated the way Harris sounded anxious as he asked again, hated that his usually loud and confident boyfriend looked so small and insecure all of a sudden.

How had they gone from exchanging sickly endearments to this? From Harris moaning and laughing into Troy’s mouth to him trying to pull away while looking unsure.

“No. Why would you say that?” Troy asked, wrapping his arms around Harris to bring him back down, forcing Harris to put all of his weight back onto Troy’s thighs.

Harris smiled shyly, setting his hands on Troy’s shoulders to steady himself when Troy held him tighter.

“Someone told me I looked good with the extra weight. I didn’t even realise that I’d— “

“Who said that?”

Harris shrugged and turned his head to the side to look away. “It was nothing, it was just some old colleague that I haven’t seen in a while. I think she meant it as a compliment, I didn’t take any offence, but I guess I have put a bit more on since we got together.”

“Harris.” Troy started slowly, reaching up to cup Harris’s cheek in his hand and bring his gaze back to Troy. “You are perfect.”

Harris snorted. “It’s just been a bit stressful with the new job and everything. Im sorry.”

“What are you sorry for? There is nothing to be sorry about. You could never be too heavy for me. Fuck, you’re the sexiest man I know. And I spend a lot of time with Rozanov and Hollander.”

Harris laughed, a genuine laugh this time that made Troy smile proudly.

Troy leaned forward to kiss the side of his mouth. “When my dad left my mum, she lost so much weight. I hardly recognised her; she had always been thin, but when he left, she just disappeared. It was horrible.” Troy started, keeping his eyes on Harris as he spoke.

Harris didn’t say anything, instead he reached up to thread his fingers through the hair at the nape of Troy’s neck comfortingly.

“And then she met Charlie and she became this new woman. She was so happy, I had never seen her that happy with my dad. She had this big smile on her face all the time and she seemed so much more relaxed and comfortable. She put the weight back on and a bit extra but she’s still beautiful. My mum called it nesting weight.  I think being in love is finding that level of comfort with someone, having someone who makes you better and takes care of you.”

Harris smiled softly at him. “That’s a nice way of looking at it.”

“I’m heavier too.”

“You’re heavier because of all that extra muscle. Mines because of cake pops.” Harris said playfully.

“It’s definitely not muscle.” Troy mocked. “Coach had us doing laps before the game yesterday and I was winded before we even started. I had to take a break, Hazy and Roz gave me shit about it all day.”

“It’s all that salmon.” Harris teased and Troy could see that familiar spark in his boyfriend’s eyes again.

Troy smiled as he felt the tension and insecurity seep out of Harris, he relaxed back into Troy’s lap, his hand still in Troy’s hair as they eased back into a comfortable rhythm of teasing. The room once again filled with warm intimacy.

“It’s all the hot chocolate and apple fritters. But I wouldn’t want it any other way. I am so lucky to have you and if we are being completely honest, I think you’re even sexier now.” Troy admitted grinning when Harris laughed. “You have that happy boyfriend glow about you.”

“You’re such a sap tonight.” Harris said tilting his head to kiss him. “I’m the lucky one.”

“We can both get fat and lazy together.”

“I’m sure coach Wiebe and Ilya would have something to say about that. The team needs you in peak physical form if we’re going to win the Stanley cup this year.”

“Hmm. I guess we will have to exercise more then.” Troy whispered across Harris’s mouth, curling his arm around Harris’s waist as he rolled them. Chiron huffed unhappily as Troy pressed Harris into the mattress and rolled his hips deliberately. “I can think of several high cardio exercises we could do together.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah.” Troy teased and then groaned. “You look so good right now and I would love to take you apart and show you just how hot you are, but I am so tired.” He added, chuckling when Harris smiled at him and blew out his cheeks, pretending to be disappointed.

“I guess it can wait until morning.” He said, leaning up to kiss him. “We have all day together tomorrow.”

Troy smiled deliberately putting his whole weight onto Harris as he closed his eyes and curled around him as best he could. Wanting to feel every inch of Harris under him as he drowsily nuzzled at his chest.

Harris kissed the top of his head and reached across to turn the bedside lamp off.

“After breakfast though.” Troy said tiredly. “I’ve been living off hotel food and protein bars for a week.”

Harris smiled at him. “Okay, after breakfast.”
