Summary
Benson squinted, eyes narrowing as the sobs wracked Randy’s body. He didn’t flinch. Didn’t smile. Didn’t move. He just stared, eyes burning into the zombie’s.
Something prickled in the back of his mind. Zombies didn’t…cry. At least, not ones he’d seen. Never once had he seen an infected shake and make that wet, choking sound that belonged to someone alive, somewhere in there.
He tilted his head down slightly, studying him. The grime, the blood, the way his lips trembled, the wetness clinging to his chin. He didn’t know why it mattered, but it did. The twitching, the sobs. It was almost human. And that made Benson laugh, low and dry, a sound that rattled off the tile.
“Fuckin’ hell…” he muttered, gruff, almost to himself. “Look at you…”
Randy’s body lurched, muscles jerking as he tried to push against the pull that dragged him forward. Another sob slipped out, wet and small, and Benson’s eyes flicked along the shaking form.
He didn’t move to kill him. Didn’t aim to. Didn’t even consider it. Not yet. Whatever this was, it was new.
