A Hazard of the Job

Summary:

Being a vigilante is no easy job, but you know the risks. Sometimes accidents happen. Sometimes you don't get to walk away from them.

Notes:

More of my crossposted works from tumblr, written when I was freshfaced and had no idea what I was doing. I was a really angsty kid for some reason jeez. Reader's hero name is Banshee, idk why just roll with it.

I do not give consent for my work to be reposted, translated, used for anything with AI, etc.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“Banshee, get out of there, it's a trap!” Tim shouted through the comms. You and the family had gotten an alert that there were hostages at a warehouse near the docks. It seemed simple at first. Get in, get the hostages safe, get out.

It was easier said than done.

As soon as you and the others had shown up, steel walls started rising to the ceiling, entrapping you in a maze. You were separated from the others but you could still hear the others. I hope Jason is alright. He probably is. Can’t say the same for anyone stupid enough to mess with him, though.

Tim had been trying to get an aerial map of the warehouse’s new design and you could hear him muttering. That wasn’t the only thing you heard. A scream rang through the maze, making you jump into action.

You ran as fast as you could towards the sound, but stopped when another scream joined it from a different part of the maze. It was familiar and then it hit you like a ton of bricks.

“JASON!!” You screamed, running towards the second voice. You had heard him scream from his nightmares almost every night, there was no mistaking that heartbreaking sound.

You reached the room where the noise was coming from. You opened it and walked inside, only to stop dead in your tracks. There were the people you had to rescue. Except that they weren’t in one piece.

Mutilated corpses filled the room and the stench made you sick. That’s when Tim started yelling for you to get out. Apparently, the rest of them had realized what was going on and left. You were the only one inside. That’s when you noticed the screen in the room and the door slammed shut.

“I need help. I’m locked in a room with all the dead hostages and there is a video playing. I can’t tell what it is yet but it can’t be good.” You said. The screen started to change and you watched closely.

The video depicted a man at a desk holding a folder. “Hello Banshee. Or should I say y/n?” He said. You gasped and started to panic. How did he know your identity? You actually did a pretty good job of hiding it unlike some.

“Yes, I know who you are. I also know about the others and that all of them are currently in my warehouse. I decided the least troublesome of them should receive a warning. There is a bomb beneath the building, which can only be delayed. Once the chemicals mix, it’s too late to stop it. Of course, I can’t have you running off and telling the others. So here’s a gift.” He said.

A click sounded in the room and a bullet hit you in the shoulder. You screamed and went down, while the others were yelling at one another over the coms. They had heard everything and were trying to figure out what to do.

There was a banging too. You couldn’t tell if it was your heart against your ribcage or the person at the door. After watching it bend a few times under someone’s weight, you decided it was the door.

Finally, it burst open and you flinched. Jason ran towards you and started putting pressure on your wounds. “Hood, get out of here. There’s a-”

“I know about the bomb, y/n. But I’m not leaving you behind, even if it kills me.” He said as he picked you up. You held on to him when you remembered something about the warehouse’s security system.

“We can’t. The system waits five minutes after there is only one person in the building, then it sets the defenses. I’ve been in here for three and there is no way we can hit the exit in time.” You said as he ran faster.

“Yes, we can. Dammit, I’m not letting you die. I can’t lose anymore people.” He said. You shook your head and looked at him. “I could try to stall the bomb so you could get out.”

“No. Y/n that’s not happening.” He muttered as the exit finally came into sight. You had been counting down in your head and knew that you wouldn’t make it. But despite all odds, Jason pushed himself harder than he ever had before.

You were safe.

But only for a few seconds before the bomb exploded and you and Jason got the brunt of the blast. He let go of you and you went flying. You landed about twenty feet away and struggled to get up.

That’s when you noticed the metal sticking out of your stomach. Your hands were painted red but you couldn’t feel much. You heard your name and turned to see Jason. Thankfully, he was alright.

“Y/n!” He yelled as he ran as fast as he could to you. You were in a pool of your own blood and he wanted to do nothing more than look at you and beg for help.

But he knew that would be no use. “No! Y/n, you’re going to be fine, okay? I’ll help you.” He said. It was more for himself than for you.

“Jason, we both know I’m not going to make it. I’ve lost too much blood and we can’t get to a hospital or the cave before I bleed out.”

“We can still try, y/n!” He shouted as he tried to pick you up, only to stop when you screamed. He set you back down as gently as he could and cradled your head in his lap. He leaned down and placed a shaky kiss to your lips.

“I’m sorry Jason. I’m sorry I’m leaving you. But I know you can make it. You’re so strong Jason and I love you so much. Don’t blame yourself and whatever you do Jay, move on. Don’t spend the rest of your life crying over me.”

“I’m sorry, y/n. I’m sorry I couldn’t protect you. No matter what you say, it’s my fault. I should’ve stayed with you and not taken so long to get to you. It’s! All! My! Fault!” He said and shouted the last bit.

“No it’s not Jason. Just remember that I lo-” you whispered as you finally drifted off to sleep forever. You closed your eyes, never to open them again to see his beautiful blue eyes.

“No! Y/n! Don’t do this to me! Please! You can’t leave me! I need you, y/n!” He begged as you slipped away. He put his head on your chest and screamed. He screamed at the world for taking you and he screamed from the pain of losing his other half.

His screams choked off into sobs as your uniform was soaked by his tears. He lifted his head to look at your face. You looked so peaceful and he couldn’t help but cup your cheeks, hoping that you were only asleep.

When he removed his hands, your face was streaked red from his bloodstained hands. He sobbed harder when he realized the cold truth of it all. You were gone. You were never coming back.

Never to hold him after a nightmare or to help him prank his brothers again. You wouldn’t be there to patch him up or keep him from losing it when the terrors became too much.

Strong arms wrapped around him and started to pull. He fought against them, screaming and clawing because they dared to take him away from you.

“No! No, Y/n! Let me go! Y/n!” He sobbed as he broke free. He ran to your body and held on as tight as he could. He felt a hand on his shoulder and looked over to see Dick.

“Jason, she’s gone. There’s nothing you can do to change that. We need to take her home before the authorities get here.” He said. Jason shook his head as he picked you up.

“We can bring her back. We can use the Lazarus pit and then I’ll track down the bastard who killed her.” Jason said.

“You’re going to put her through that? Jason, are you sure?” Dick asked.

“She was stronger than me in so many ways. She’ll make it out fine.” Jason said as he went on a new mission to resurrect his love.
