The notification pinged across Jake's phone screen at exactly 3:47 PM on a Tuesday afternoon, and he nearly dropped his iced coffee all over his gaming setup.
"Congratulations! You have been selected to participate in an exclusive Love and Deepspace live event..."
Jake read the email three times, his brown eyes growing wider with each pass. His hands trembled slightly as he scrolled through the details, his heart hammering against his ribs in a way that had nothing to do with his omega biology and everything to do with pure, unadulterated excitement.
Love and Deepspace was not just a game to Jake. It was his comfort, his escape, his happy place during long streaming sessions when the loneliness of his small apartment felt too heavy. And Sylus, the mysterious, flirtatious, danger-wrapped-in-silk character, was his absolute favorite. The way Sylus spoke, the way he moved through the story with that confident swagger, the way his voice dropped low during the intimate moments, Jake had spent more hours than he cared to admit getting flustered over pixelated dialogue options.
Now, apparently, he was going to meet Sylus. Well, a cosplayer playing Sylus. During a live event. On his channel. In front of thousands of viewers.
"Oh no," Jake whispered to his empty apartment, his accent thickening the way it always did when he was stressed. "Oh no, no, no."
His inner omega was already doing nervous backflips, and the event was still three days away.
The production company had rented out an elegant studio space in Gangnam, all exposed brick and atmospheric lighting that screamed expensive. Jake arrived twenty minutes early because he was always early, a nervous habit he had never managed to break. He clutched his water bottle like a lifeline and tried very hard not to think about the fact that he had changed his outfit four times that morning.
He had settled on black jeans and an oversized cream sweater that hung off one shoulder, showing just a hint of his collarbone. Casual. Comfortable. Definitely not because he wanted to look good. The staff had assured him the temperature would be controlled, but he had still packed a small bag with his suppressants, just in case. Events like this could be unpredictable, and the last thing he needed was his omega acting up on a live stream.
"Jake!" A cheerful producer named Minji waved him over to where they had set up the main filming area. "We are so excited to have you. Your reactions to the Sylus storyline have been iconic. The company specifically requested you for this event."
Jake felt his cheeks warm. "Really? I mean, I just... I really love the game."
"Trust me, we know." Minji grinned and gestured to the setup. They had recreated several iconic locations from the game, the N109 Zone's signature red lighting in one corner, the more intimate setting of Sylus's base in another. "Your partner for today should be arriving any minute. He is a professional cosplayer and model. He has been studying Sylus's character for weeks to make this as immersive as possible."
Immersive. That word sent a little thrill of nervousness down Jake's spine.
"Do I... do I get to meet him before we start?" Jake asked, his voice smaller than he intended.
"Of course! We will do introductions, go over the schedule, and then… Oh, perfect timing!"
The door to the studio opened, and Jake's entire world tilted on its axis.
The man who walked in was tall. In a way that made Jake feel every centimeter of his own modest height. Broad shoulders filled out a simple black t-shirt, and dark jeans hung perfectly on long legs. But it was not the height or the build that made Jake's breath catch in his throat.
It was the scent.
Alpha. Strong, confident, with notes of cedar and something darker, something that made Jake's omega instincts sit up and pay attention in a way they had not in months. Maybe years. The scent was not overwhelming, the man was clearly well-controlled, but it was there, undeniable and magnetic.
And then the man smiled, and Jake forgot how to breathe entirely.
"Hi," the alpha said, his voice a low rumble that seemed to resonate in Jake's chest. "I am Lee Heeseung. You must be Jake."
Heeseung extended a hand, and Jake stared at it for a beat too long before his brain reconnected with his body. He reached out, his own hand disappearing into Heeseung's larger one, and the warmth of the contact sent sparks racing up his arm.
"Y-yes. Jake. I am Jake. Obviously. You just... you just said that." Jake wanted to melt into the floor. "Sorry. Hi. Nice to meet you."
Heeseung's smile widened, and Jake noticed the way his eyes crinkled at the corners, warm and genuinely friendly. "I have been watching your streams to prepare. Your reactions to Sylus are really entertaining. I will try my best to live up to your expectations."
Jake made a sound that was somewhere between a laugh and a squeak. "I am sure you will be great. You already... I mean, you look... you are very tall."
You are very tall? Really, Jake? That is what you are going with?
But Heeseung just laughed, a sound that was far too pleasant for Jake's poor omega heart. "I will take that as a compliment. Shall we go over what we will be doing today?"
The event structure was simple enough in theory. Jake would play through several new story scenarios from the upcoming update, and Heeseung, dressed as Sylus, would act out the scenes in real time, responding to Jake's choices and reactions. There would be mini-games, photo opportunities, and fan questions throughout the three-hour stream.
In practice, Jake was fairly certain he was going to spontaneously combust.
Heeseung had disappeared into the dressing room to change into his Sylus costume, and Jake was left trying to do his usual pre-stream routine, checking camera angles, testing audio levels, reading through chat as early viewers began to trickle in. But his mind was not on the technical details. It was on the alpha who smelled like a forest at midnight and smiled like he knew exactly how flustered Jake was.
"Okay, everyone," Minji called out, clapping her hands together. "We are going live in five minutes. Jake, are you good with the intro?"
"Yes, I have got it," Jake said, forcing himself into streamer mode. He could do this. He had streamed for thousands of people before. This was just another event. Just anothe…
The dressing room door opened.
Heeseung stepped out, and Jake's prepared introduction fled from his mind like startled birds.
The Sylus costume was perfect. Too perfect. The black and red leather jacket, the high collar, the silver details catching the ligh, every element was exactly as it appeared in the game. Heeseung's dark hair had been styled to match Sylus's signature look, falling across his forehead in a way that was almost criminal. Red-tinted contacts made his gaze sharp and intense, and when he moved, he moved with Sylus's exact brand of predatory grace.
But worse, so much worse, was the way Heeseung looked at Jake.
It was not Heeseung's friendly smile anymore. It was Sylus's knowing smirk, that particular tilt of the head that said I know exactly what I am doing to you, and I am enjoying it.
"Ready to begin, kitten?" Heeseung asked, and his voice had dropped into Sylus's range, smooth and dangerous and laced with dark amusement.
Jake's inner omega did a full somersault.
"I... yes. Ready. Totally ready." Jake turned to his camera, desperately trying to find his professional composure. "Not flustered at all."
Behind the camera, Minji gave him a thumbs up. The countdown began. Three. Two. One.
"Hi everyone!" Jake's streaming voice was miraculously steady, bright and enthusiastic as his camera light turned green. "Welcome to a very special stream! As you can see, I am not in my usual setup today. We are doing something really exciting ! Love and Deepspace team has invited me to preview some content from their new update, and I will not be alone."
On cue, Heeseung stepped into frame, and Jake watched his chat explode into chaos.
"This is Sylus," Jake continued, trying very hard not to look directly at Heeseung because looking at him meant dealing with the full force of that character-perfect presence. "Well, a cosplayer playing Sylus. He will be acting out the scenes with me as we go through the new storylines."
"Pleasure to finally meet your viewers," Heeseung said, his Sylus voice sending a wave of comments flooding through the chat. "I have heard so much about them. Almost as much as I have heard about Jake's... enthusiastic reactions to our previous encounters."
Jake's face went hot. "Okay, so let us jump right into the first scenario!"
The first scene was set in the N109 Zone, the dangerous area where Sylus held power. In the game, it was a moment of tension, the player character had to negotiate with Sylus for information, and he was, as always, being deliberately difficult.
In person, with Heeseung leaning against the recreated set piece, his presence filling the space, with that scent wrapping around Jake like silk, it was so much more than tension.
"You came all this way to see me," Heeseung said, his eyes locked on Jake's face. "I am flattered. Or perhaps you simply missed me?"
The dialogue was straight from the game, but hearing it in real life, directed at him specifically, made Jake's heart stumble over itself.
"I need information," Jake read from his dialogue options, trying to sound firm. "Not your flirting."
Heeseung's smirk widened. He pushed off from the wall and crossed the distance between them in three smooth strides. Suddenly, he was close. Too close. Jake could feel the warmth radiating from him, could smell that cedar-and-night scent even stronger now.
"My flirting?" Heeseung reached out and caught a strand of Jake's hair between his fingers, exactly as Sylus did in one of the game's romance scenes. "I was not aware I was flirting. Perhaps you are simply too eager to read into my words, kitten."
Jake's brain short-circuited. His chat was going absolutely feral, comments flying past faster than he could track. But all he could focus on was Heeseung's hand, still playing with that strand of his hair, and the way those red-tinted eyes seemed to see right through him.
"I…you…that is not…" Jake stammered, and he knew his face must be bright red. "The dialogue option does not have a response for that!"
Heeseung laughed, and it was his own laugh this time, breaking character just enough to be kind. He stepped back, giving Jake space to breathe. "Sorry. Should I tone it down?"
"No!" Jake said too quickly, then realized how that sounded. "I mean, you are doing great. Perfect. Very... Very Sylus."
"I will take that as encouragement to continue, then."
Oh no.
The three hours that followed were a special kind of sweet torture.
Heeseung was a professional in every sense of the word. He knew exactly when to stay in character and when to break to let Jake catch his breath. He was attentive to the camera angles, made sure Jake was always the star of the stream, and handled every mini-game and fan question with charm and humor.
But he was also merciless in the way only someone fully committed to their role could be.
During a game where they had to stand close together to examine a clue, Heeseung had bracketed Jake against the desk, one hand planted on either side of him, caging him in. "Find anything interesting, kitten?" he had murmured, his breath warm against Jake's ear, and Jake had legitimately forgotten how to read for a solid ten seconds.
When they did the photo opportunity segment, Heeseung had wrapped an arm around Jake's waist and pulled him flush against his side. "Smile for your fans, sweetheart," he had said, and Jake's smile had been more of a dazed, flustered mess than anything camera-ready.
The fan questions were somehow even worse.
"This question is for Jake," Minji read from the submitted list. "What is your favorite thing about Sylus's character?"
Jake, who had just barely recovered from the last scene, tried to formulate a coherent answer. "I think... I really like how he is confident but not arrogant? He knows what he wants, and he is not afraid to go after it, but he is also really perceptive about other people's feelings. He pays attention."
"How interesting," Heeseung said, still in character. He tilted his head, studying Jake with those unnerving red contacts. "It sounds like you appreciate someone who notices the little things. The way you bite your lip when you are nervous, perhaps. Or how your hands shake when you are flustered."
Jake's hands were, in fact, shaking at that exact moment. "I did not say that!"
"You did not have to."
The chat loved every second of it. Jake's viewer count had tripled from his usual numbers, and the comments ranged from keysmash enthusiasm to detailed analyses of the chemistry between him and Heeseung. Several people kept commenting that this felt less like a promotional event and more like watching a real-life romance unfold.
Jake tried very hard not to think about that.
By the time they reached the final scene, a quieter, more intimate moment set in Sylus's private quarters, Jake's omega instincts were a confused tangle of want and overwhelm. His suppressants were holding, but he could feel the edges of his biology responding to Heeseung's presence, to that alpha scent that his instincts insisted was safe, protective, desirable.
The scene required them to sit together on a velvet couch that the production team had brought in. Heeseung settled into the corner, all leonine grace, and then patted his lap. "Come here, kitten."
"That is not… That is not in the dialogue!" Jake protested, even as he moved closer because the script did call for them to sit together.
"Improvising," Heeseung said with that Sylus smirk. "Unless you would rather sit on the cold couch than somewhere more comfortable?"
Jake's face burned hot enough to power a small city, but he knew his viewers would riot if he did not play along. He perched on the edge of Heeseung's lap, trying to keep some distance, but Heeseung's arm came around his waist, steadying him, pulling him back against his chest.
"There," Heeseung murmured, his voice low enough that Jake was not sure if the microphone would catch it. "Much better."
Jake could feel Heeseung's heartbeat against his back, steady and sure, and it did absolutely nothing to calm his own racing pulse. The scene's dialogue was about trust, about the growing bond between Sylus and the player character, and Jake had to read his lines while being hyper-aware of every point of contact between them.
"I never know if I can trust you," Jake read, his voice softer than usual.
"Trust is earned," Heeseung replied, and his hand came up to rest on Jake's shoulder, his thumb brushing against the exposed skin where his sweater had slipped. "But I have never lied to you, have I? I simply do not always tell you everything."
"That is basically the same thing."
"Is it?" Heeseung's thumb traced slow circles on Jake's shoulder, and Jake could feel goosebumps rising in its wake. "Or are you simply afraid of what it might mean if you trust me completely?"
The script called for a choice here, push Sylus away, or lean into the vulnerability. Jake's hand hovered over the dialogue options on his tablet.
Before he could select one, Heeseung spoke again, off-script. "You are shaking, kitten. Are you cold? Or is it something else?"
Jake's breath caught. The way Heeseung said it, the genuine concern woven through the character's teasing tone, made something in his chest tighten almost painfully.
"I am okay," Jake managed. "Just... a lot of people watching."
"Then let them watch," Heeseung said, and Jake felt him shift, adjusting so Jake was more securely settled against him. "You are doing beautifully."
It was Heeseung's real voice for just a moment, reassuring and kind, before he slipped back into Sylus's smooth confidence. "Now, make your choice. Will you trust me, or will you keep running?"
Jake selected the trust option with trembling fingers.
The scene played out with Heeseung's arms wrapped around him, their faces close enough that Jake could count the individual lashes behind those red contacts. When the scene finally ended, and Minji called for the stream to wrap up, Jake felt simultaneously relieved and disappointed.
"That was amazing!" Minji gushed as Jake signed off and the cameras stopped rolling. "The engagement numbers were incredible. The company is already talking about doing more events like this."
Jake nodded, trying to focus on her words, but his entire awareness was still centered on Heeseung, who had stepped away to remove the red contacts but was still in full Sylus costume.
"You did really well," Heeseung said, returning to Jake's side. His eyes were back to their natural dark brown, warm and sincere. "I know that was probably overwhelming. Thank you for being such a good sport about everything."
"You are a really good actor," Jake said, and then, because his brain-to-mouth filter had apparently gone on vacation, "And you smell really nice."
Heeseung's eyebrows rose, and Jake wanted to sink into the floor.
"I mean ! Sorry… I should not have…"
"Hey." Heeseung's hand landed gently on Jake's shoulder, grounding him. "It is okay. For what it is worth, you smell nice too. Like honey and vanilla."
Jake stared up at him, his heart doing acrobatics.
"Would you want to grab coffee sometime?" Heeseung asked, and his scent carried a note of nervousness that Jake would not have expected from someone who had just spent three hours being the epitome of confidence. "Not as Sylus and a streamer. Just... as us?"
Jake's omega practically purred in approval. His human brain was only slightly more composed.
"I would really like that," Jake said, and his smile was genuine, bright, and completely flustered. "But maybe somewhere with less cameras?"
Heeseung laughed, that wonderful sound that Jake was rapidly becoming addicted to. "I think I can arrange that, kitten."
"Heeseung!"
"Sorry, sorry. Old habits." But Heeseung did not look sorry at all, and when he handed Jake his phone to exchange numbers, his fingers lingered against Jake's palm just a moment longer than necessary.
As Jake left the studio that evening, his chat notifications were still exploding, and the event hashtag was trending. But all he could think about was the alpha who had made fiction feel like reality, and the coffee date that would hopefully show him what reality with Lee Heeseung might actually be like.
His inner omega was already counting down the hours.
