Mercy of An Angel

Summary:

Jeon Jeongguk was raised to believe monsters deserved mercy only in death.
Lui Ai Hua has spent decades carrying the guilt of a family she couldn’t save.

When a hunt meant to end in blood instead becomes a reunion neither of them is prepared for, truth turns dangerous, mercy becomes a weapon, and love—misplaced or remembered—threatens to destroy them both.

Notes:

Hi! It’s me again. I decided to try the angst genre to see if I could carry it. This is a work that was written for a creative arts scholarship that somehow branded from a simple concept to a huge fanfic. It’s rather angst heavy so please be warned if that’s not your cup of tea.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Back Stories -

Jeon Jeongguk is a dhampir who was raised to believe that his vampire father killed his mother out of cold blood. He came to the agency at 15 after he killed his own father. This was his first vampire killing. One of the best vampire assassins in the Black Accord. Very closed off to other humans who are a part of the organization. Revenge driven and very loyal to the organization but very strong willed.

Lui Ai Hua is a vampire who was turned in the 1960s and was best friends with Jeongguk’s mother. Ran away from her home Shanghai after her parents died during the war. Has been looking for Jeongguk since she was turned. She moved from Shanghai to South Korea in the 1950s at age 17 (1957), became a vampire at 26 (1966). Was turned by Jeongguk’s father. She resents herself for what happened to Hyejin and blames herself for Jeongguk growing up how he did.

The Black Accord was founded and is run by Kim Hwiseong who found Jeongguk and brought him in. He is the only person alive (besides Ai Hua) who knows about Jeongguk’s half vampire blood. Only makes decisions that benefit him and his organization. Was working for the government under orders but has since gone rogue and is his own boss.

Liam Lee is one of Hwiseong’s bodyguards, practically raised Jeongguk and was his primary trainer. Not a part of Black Accord by choice, under the thumb of Hwiseong. Hates his boss.

Wang Xi Yu is a mage under the Black Accord, there because his lover was murdered by a den of vampires, revenge driven. One of Hwiseong’s best, second to only Jeongguk. Hates Jeongguk from jealousy. He deliberately makes his assassinations painful for his victims.

Kim Namjoon is a navy veteran who was recruited to the organization at 25. Jeongguk looks up to him. His family was killed in an orchestrated terrorist attack by vampires. Him and his brother Taehyung were the only survivors. He’s very intelligent, not revenge driven. He’s only part of the organization to take care of his little brother.

Kim Taehyung, Namjoon's little brother. Family died in an orchestrated terrorist attack. He blames all his misfortune on vampires’ existence and is very prejudiced against them. Very strong willed so he and Jimin are the only humans Jeongguk is close with. Best friends with Park Jimin since they were teenagers.

Park Jimin is an orphan from Busan. His parents abandoned him because they dreamed of being bitten and living an immortal life and didn’t want a kid ruining that. Rather than blaming his parents he blames vampires for his misfortune just like Taehyung. Friends with Jeongguk, strong willed but not revenge driven.

Kim Seokjin is from a military family and was forced to enlist to honor his family wishes. He was placed under the Black Accord as an assassin. Follows orders because he has too, not because he wants to. Close to Namjoon, Jimin, Taehyung, Yoongi, and Hoseok, and stays with the Black Accord to protect them.

Jung Hoseok is an orphan who was always sick growing up so his parents abandoned him. The Black Accord took him in. He’s loyal to the organization because they raised him and taught him how to defend himself. Is one of the only members of the organization that is hesitant about killing vampires.

Min Yoongi is another one of Hwiseong’s bodyguards. He was a SEAL in the American military before being stationed in Korea. Doesn’t like Hwiseong because of the killings. Doesn’t believe all vampires are bad. Only still a part of the organization because of Jeongguk. He was one of Jeongguk’s gun instructors and they naturally grew close, until Jeongguk found out his dhampir origin and cut communication.

Jeon Jungwon is Jeongguk’s father and a vampire. He was turned by a man involved in the mafia to serve as an obedient servant. Met Hyejin in 1960 after he saved her from her abusive father. Killed by Jeongguk’s hand. His wife, Hyejin was killed by himself in a mercy killing. His sire gave her an incantation that inflicted never ending pain so he killed her to stop the pain. Raised Jeongguk by himself for 25 years (aging is different) before he was murdered.

Park Hyejin is Jeongguk’s mother who died in the 1970s. She was killed by her husband to grant her mercy. Very close to Ai Hua. Met Jungwon in the 1960s after he saved her from her abusive dad. Her mother died when she was young and left her stuck with an alcoholic and abusive father. Ran away from home and found a place with Ai Hua and then married Jungwon when they fell in love.

Notes: Jeon Jeongguk was born in 1964. Though chronologically 33 in 1999, his dhampir physiology slowed his physical development after early childhood. At this stage, he appears no older than fifteen — an age considered dangerously young for a dhampir, whose full maturation does not occur until a century has passed.
