Work Text:
The nurses finish cleaning Tim and Lucy up and then look at the couple in front of them. “You two need to be observed before we let you go home.”
“Thank you.” Lucy’s voice is hoarse, but she doesn’t care about that right now. They’re alive, that’s what matters most. Tim pulls her down to lay in the bed with him. “For someone who hates firefighters, you certainly find yourself stuck in fires a lot.” Lucy teases Tim and he rolls his eyes.
She can feel his arms grip her a little tighter and she can sense the adrenaline wearing off. “Babe.”
Tim’s eyes move to look at hers. Their physical cuts will heal, but Lucy really thought she lost him and that scared the hell out of her. “Lucy, you saved me. No one else was coming for me. You always come.” She wipes some tears away that are rolling down his cheeks.
“I will always save you and I will always come for you.” The medicine given to them is wearing off, but she doesn’t care. “Lucy.” She hears the emotion in his voice. “I can’t ever lose you.”
Lucy cups his cheek. “I can’t lose you either and you can’t die on me. This is forever and you’re pretty much stuck with me.”
“That’s all I want, Luce.” He pulls her in for a kiss. It’s soft, yet messy and full of emotion. “God I love you so much.”
“I love you too, Tim.” Her head keeps thinking of what would have happened if she didn’t find him in time. She has to shake those thoughts out of her head because she did find him. He’s alive. Lucy moves her hand to his chest and feels his heart beating against it.
The door swings opens and they see Genny standing there, shaking. “Oh thank god. The station that was blown up is all over the news and I couldn’t find anything out. Then you don’t even answer your phones.” Lucy slides out of bed and pulls Genny in for a hug. “I was so scared.”
“We’re okay. We are both alive. You aren’t getting rid of us any time soon.” Lucy has become extremely close with Genny.
“I can’t lose either of you.” Lucy hates how Genny found out, but it was the last thing on her mind. Their phones are the last thing they thought about and she knows they are in a bag somewhere. Genny goes over to hug Tim. “You aren’t allowed to die on me. Neither of you are.”
Tim puts his hands up. “I’m not going anywhere and neither is Lucy. You can’t take us down that easily.”
“You’re an idiot.” She mutters and hugs him again. “I need you around and I need Lucy around for when you piss me off.”
Both women chuckle. The doctor finally comes back in. “You two can go home. You’re going to need to clean those cuts at least twice a day for the next few days. You’re also getting an inhaler.” They look at each other because they went through this exact thing not too long ago. “It sounds like you two are always in here for something. I take it you know how to use these.”
Lucy’s cheeks go red. “Yes, we do.” Genny grabs them. “We’ve left some scrubs for you to change into. I hope I don’t see you two for a while.” With that, he walks out the door in a hurry.
Genny crosses her arms and it’s scary how much she looks like Tim. “You two really need to stop getting injured and ending up here. I’ll tie you up and never let you go if I have to.”
Lucy giggles and grabs Tim's hand to go change. “We will try our best.” They help each other change because they’re both hurting and extremely sore. Genny grabs their things and they hold onto each other, hobbling out of the hospital together.
“Stay here and I’ll grab my car. You two don’t need to over exert yourselves.” She gives them the mom look and goes to grab her car.
“So I take it that we can’t have any naked times tonight?” Tim whispers in her ear. “Because that would really suck.”
“You almost just died. As much as I love naked times, I think we should relax, order takeout, and maybe you can read me that book.” Tim smiles softly remembering the incredibly thoughtful gift Lucy found. He still feels like his gift couldn’t compare, but she was so happy.
“I think that sounds perfect.” He turns to look at her. “I love that book. I still can’t believe you did that for me. No one has ever cared that much.”
Lucy’s hand cups his cheek. “You deserve all the good in this world, Tim. Plus, you always spoil me. I love seeing you smile and I love seeing you happy.”
“You make me happy.” He tears his forehead against hers. “I don’t think thank you will ever be enough.”
“You don’t need to thank me. I’ve told you I’m proud of you and we are here together. Now, let’s go home.” Lucy squeezes his hand. “You know what I could eat.”
“Veggie burger, fries, with extra pickles.” Tim says easily.
“You know me so well.”
“I know you too well.” Tim smirks just as Genny pulls the car around. Tim makes Lucy sit in the front. He is in the back, his eyes never leaving Lucy.
“Can I leave you two alone tonight?” Genny asks once they’re in the house.
Tim waves her off. “We will be fine and if we need anything, I promise that we will call.” Genny reluctantly leaves and Tim pulls Lucy to their room. They each get more comfortable, with Lucy putting on one of shirts and a pair of his sweatpants.
Dinner arrives shortly after and they eat quickly. Both of them are hungry and haven’t eaten much that day. “Come here.” He pulls Lucy into his lap and wraps her arms around her. They’re sitting on the couch now.
Lucy lays her head on Tim’s chest and lets herself breathe. They are both safe. She thought he died tonight and that terrified her. She would have done everything to save him, no matter the cost. “I was so scared today.”
“I was too.” Tim says honestly. “But we are both alive and everyone is safe. The station can be rebuilt.” Lucy can feel her emotions bubbling and Tim rubs her back as she cries. “Hey, we’re okay.” He reassures her.
“I’m sorry. Today sucked and I am blaming myself.” Tim stops her right there.
“He made a choice and that’s not on you Lucy.” Tim holds her just a little tighter.
“But if someone died, if you died, I’d never forgive myself.” He knows she’s beating herself up even though she did everything right.
“You did your job today, Luce. You saved more than just my life. You are a damn good cop and I’m proud of you.” Hearing that means everything to Lucy.
They lay in silence and it’s calming. These moments are what they both missed the most. “Do you remember after the wildfire when I said that my priorities were crystal clear?”
Tim’s voice startles Lucy and his words confuse her. “I do remember that. I thought you were going to work things out that night but then everything happened with James.”
Tim blows out a breath, coughing slightly. “Today my priorities are clearer than ever. Our jobs are dangerous, but also rewarding.”
“They are.” Lucy murmurs but Tim puts his finger over her mouth.
“I just need to get this out.” Lucy sits up and looks directly in his eyes. “Lucy, life is too short. You are absolutely everything good in this world and you’ve brought the light back to my life. Living with you makes me happier than I can put into words. You’re the last person I see before I go to sleep and the first person I see when I wake up. I want that forever. You are the love of my life. Maybe there are soul mates out there and no, it’s not something I ever believed in, but I know that you’re mine. I love you, Lucy Chen.”
Tim pulls her in for a long kiss. “You are my soulmate, Tim. I love you and you are my future.”
“I’ve had another jewelry box for a long time and it’s something I could never part with. I know things haven’t gone as planned with us, but we are exactly where we belong. This isn’t how I envisioned this happening but I can’t find a better moment than now.” Lucy has tears pooling in the corner of her eyes. “Will you make me even happier and marry me, Lucy Chen?”
Tim is nervous but this is the easiest answer for Lucy. “Yes, I will marry you.” She pulls him in for a kiss. They don’t do more than makeout.
“I promise the ring is in the house.” Tim tells her. They’re laying on the couch, Lucy curled into Tim.
“I believe you babe. It’s too hard to move right now.”
Tim chuckles. “I agree but I forgot where I hid it.” Lucy looks at him and sees the twinkle in his eyes knowing he’s teasing.
She slaps his chest gently. “You’re such a jerk.”
“And I’m all yours, forever baby.” Tim kisses her forehead.
Lucy is half asleep on Tim. “Damn right you are. Now I believe you promised you’d read to me.”
Tim grabs the book and Lucy’s asleep just a few pages in. He kisses her head and her heartbeat lulls him to sleep. They really are each other’s safe place.
