Chapter 1: Chapter 1 – The Stranger

Chapter Text

That was the fifth book of magic he had tried, and nothing worked!

Sebastian Goetia was one of three adopted brothers, all princes of the Ice Kingdom. He put down the last book he had found on the subject and shook off the dust. The library was cold like people from ordinary places feel at dawn, at least the door is strong enough to withstand even a snowstorm let the snow enter. Looking at the candles, he thought about calling August to ask for help, but he was out of the house hunting, and the eldest was tired of always being with the beak in the books. He shakes his head and looks at the windows even considering Félix, the youngest between the three and more playful among the servants, but Félix would soon get distracted, and he didn't want a mess with the papers. It was already difficult enough to copy these from Spring Village. Then there was himself – the middle and most studious brother. He searched for ways to find other kingdoms, to find suitors for his brothers to marry (no, he was not interested himself), and, most importantly, a warmer place so he would not need to use a fireplace just to keep the plants alive. That damned place will kill them one day or another.

Why a magic book, then? Well, August had looked through maps pointing places as reference to Sebastian and ridden through the forests but found nothing. Then they need to ask for one of the Fragments, from what he had researched , they were a kind of goddess with connected minds. The fractal responsible for their health and wellbeing keeps herself distant in order to not bring her concept - Chaos – to torment them even more. But their food was getting less each time, each month the population gets weaker, and he needs help. But the books he found didn’t have what he needed.

“Any luck out there?”

Helena, one smart lady and August's girlfriend, often helped both of them with planning.
“Nothing yet, information about creation, powers, dynamic, but nothing about invocation, sorry.”

She walked closer and looked at the books put back in place, passing her greyfeathered fingers along the surface before cross her arms with a half-smile, well, the best a bird can do:

“Didn't find the sigil yet? I heard our Patron is not helping much due to her… condition.”

Sebastian exhaled and massaged his nose. Of course, most of the hopes and destiny is based on the little gambles and humor of the fractals, that's why people like to read about Greek mythology – you aren't there to suffer if a goddess gets pissed and sends an ice storm or makes the ground tremble.
Helena tilted her head in thought, as if considering how to console him, before snapping her fingers:

“Hey, did you know we have a new inhabitant in the castle? It is funny, because she is a bird but acts as our servant wolves.”

This made Sebastian frown in curiosity. Birds were generally goetias in the castle - nobility, unlike the wolves who worked out of the castle for their high resistance against weather and the moths inside for more delicate chores like cleaning. If she was a useful person, then she might be able to help their chances of survival. And another thing: most of the time, when a new inhabitant is sent, soon their Patron comes to check on them and help with their situation, and he would have a chance to actually talk about their difficulties without being played again. He leaned forward and asked:
“ What is her name?”

“She calls herself Lissa Trickster.”
