Chapter 1: welcome back fish sticks

Chapter Text

The first thing Y/N noticed on her way into camp was how bright the sky was. Jason’s the only person who believes her when she claims the sky changes. It’s hard not to notice the dull sky back in Los Angeles, but up here in Long Island, it's much more inviting.

She’s been gone for months, all the way since January. It was June now, the beginning of the summer. She wanted to try school again, because well, it hadn’t really worked out all that well the other three times. But nonetheless, her mom wanted her to try again, to attempt to be a normal sixteen year old girl. Normal and daughter of Poseidon really didn’t go together.

So she was so very grateful to be back after months and miles away from high school. Because even if she singlehandedly slayed a fleet of monsters with a tsunami, homework and social gatherings were still pretty scary.

Her bags were already whisked somewhere to her cabin, following Chiron up to the big house. The familiar scent of strawberries and the lake meeting her as she climbed the stairs. Y/N hadn't seen her friends, especially Jason since she left. Her stomach churned, she wondered if they would recognize her, if he would.

“We missed you here, Y/N, truly. Jason would beg to use the computer. I think he and Leo are waiting for you, actually.” Chiron speaks, his eyes crinkling with his smile. His hooves thumped against the wooden steps.

“Thank you, I really missed it here too.” It was hard not to forget every email he would send. Twice a week, every Tuesday and Thursday. It was nice to read his words. She would rush home and just stare at her mothers computer, waiting for any message at all.

And there he was, at the top of the steps, cracking his fingers like he always did when he was nervous, a gold coin still in his hand. His thick, blonde hair had gotten longer, shaggy, but purposeful. And his glasses hung low on his nose, only for him to push them back up. The small scar on his upper lip looks darker against bronzed lips. His stormy, bright blue eyes flicked up, to catch hers.

“Oh wow….er- hey y/n” He rushes forward, eyes wide with a stunned grin on his face.

Jason was not expecting her to come back prettier than when she left. The setting sun behind her only hairs her glow more, her y/h/c curls flowing in the breeze perfectly, with her eyes having flecks of a deep blue, matching the sea. They were hiding behind her glasses, but he didn’t care, it was like the wind was knocked out of him when she smiled at the sight of him.

Even more so when she ran up to and wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him into a hug. He nearly forgot his name, his glasses jumping up. She smelled like sea salt and vanilla. And he didn’t know where to put his hands, how to be polite. So he rested them just above her waist, timid but firm. He really didn’t want her to leave again.

“Jason oh my gods! Its been so so so so long! I have so much to tell you, and Leo” She pulls back, realizing how dazed Jason looks. “Its.. its great to see you.”

“You too, y/n/n.” He watches her, voice unwavering. “I missed you so much.” He spoke without thinking, but it felt like the right thing to say, voice soft. Jason found it hard to stop himself from saying too much.

Y/N tried to not feel affected by his words. That he really missed her, anticipated for this moment. Especially because of how unexpectedly she left for school, without telling him. She prayed that her face wasn't burning.

“I did too..” Her voice got smaller, still as appreciative. She forgot how blunt Jason was, but was too happy to have it back. They didn’t look away from each other, eyes searching in one another for the months they’d been apart. Jason’s mouth went dry, and suddenly he was stuck in his spot.

Thank Jupiter for Leo, he thought as Leo himself bursts through the doors, shit-eating grin on his face as he pulled her into a hug.

“Fish Sticks, my goodness you're finally here!” he jumped into her arms for a hug and she laughed, rolling her eyes at another stupidly themed nickname.

“Yes, I missed you too Leo.” She drops him and he stumbles dramatically, grinning. He glances back at Jason, he’s finally getting himself together. Of course Leo just had to notice.

“Sparky over here would not stop talking to you. I’m surprised he survived without his very best friend in the whole world.” He glances back at Jason, who may or may not want to strangle him.

Jason didn’t talk about her that much, it's just that he and Leo did a lot of stuff at camp that he knew that Y/N would love to do. She just happened to find her way into every conversation that Leo had the idea of making a lifesize robot for him to talk to, “Not funny,” Jason told him.

He didn’t tell Leo how much he thought of her, and what she’d be doing in school at the moment

“We both just missed you a lot. I missed my best friend who didn’t constantly make fun of me.” He shoots Leo a look, daring him to speak again.

“You just couldn’t live without me, huh Sparky? I was definitely gonna make fun of you too” Y/n laughs, pushing Jason hard enough to hurt. And he tried not to look too annoyed at the consistent nickname.

“That’s why I said constantly.” He grunts, not even caring as much that she was teasing him, or that Leo was poking him. Jason was just really glad she was back.
