Chapter 1: Why does maths suck?

Chapter Text

It was your first day at Imperial College London. You are finally on your way to becoming an electrical engineer like you had dreamed most of your teenage years. You were lucky enough to get a single dorm room and had your own peace, so the first day after moving in was spent decorating your room to your liking, nothing too much, but you did bring some books and things for your hobbies.
Of course, you were nervous for the big first day of classes, so the night before you spent on a video call with your best friend Lily trying to find the perfect outfit.
- Y/n, every single outfit you showed me looked amazing! What are we trying to do here: get a degree or find your future husband? - Lily said after you put on your 8th choice of clothes, she was really getting fed up with your indecisiveness over something so simple. Yet she was right, your whole wardrobe was assembled of pieces of clothes which were versatile one with another and looked great on you, because that was your plan from the beginning of your last year of high school. Yet that night, nothing seemed right, and you were more nervous than you had ever been.
- I don't know Lily, I just don't want to look too dressed up, but also not..too casual? What is an electrical engineering student even supposed to look like!? - as you said those last words, you threw yourself onto your bed and let out a big groan of annoyance.
- Okay love, put on those black wide-legged dressy trousers and a tight black shirt on top, put on the wackiest socks you have and your favourite cardigan or jacket on top. It's a perfect outfit for your first day, you will fit right in. - Lily was being too positive about that idea, and she flashed you a huge smile which showed her pure intent to make you finally calm down.
- Sure, but I swear if everyone shows up wearing neck ties and blazers I will come back home just to cry to you. - you said in a joking tone, picking up your phone from where it was propped up on your desk. You said goodbye to Lily to get ready for bed and your first big day asa a grown-up engineering student.

You set your alarm for 6 in the morning, even though your first class starts at 8. Why? You were terribly afraid of being late. After getting ready, you had a nice 30 minutes to waste because you were too early, so you went to the classroom of your first class, mathematics. Usually, people who like maths or are at least good at it go into engineering, and that was the part where you struggled more than the average student. Every subject came easy enough for you, even physics, but maths was the one subject you had to study day and night to get a good score. Naturally, you were the most afraid of this class.

The door to the classroom was open when you arrived and a few students were already inside, probably commuters, and so was the professor. A tall man who was slowly balding with gray hair in a simple button-up and jeans.
- Hello miss, you will have assigned seating in my class for this semester. Find your last name and sit there please. - the professor said in a completely monotone voice. He looked pretty tired and was probably close to retirement.
-Okay sir, thank you! - you responded and got to looking around the classroom. This was very unexpected, you had never heard of assigned seating at university. You found your last name in a seat very close to the front, in the 3rd row. That was great considering your poor eyesight and need for glasses which you refuse to wear. And right next to your last name was a young man with light brown hair in an orange hoodie and dark blue jeans. You tapped him on his shoulder and reached your arm out to introduce yourself.
- Hi, I'm Y/n. - he gave you an awkward smile and shook your hand.
- Hi there Y/n, I'm Oscar. - and that's when the Australian accent came through and coloured you surprised.
-Oscar the Australian huh, does your middle name happen to be Jack? - you said, as a joke to break the ice, but he gave you an even more awkward smile.
- Um, actually, yes. My middle name is Jack, as you can see on the paper in front of me. - and that's how you went completely silent and did not know what to say. Was he offended? Did he find it at least a bit amusing? Does he hate you already?

You looked at the clock on the wall, and you had 20 more minutes before class should start, and you were completely lost and had no idea what to say. So you sat down next to Oscar and took out your notebook and pen.
- Oh, a notebook? No laptop or ipad? - Oscar asked, picking up your little black notebook and opening it to see fresh, empty pages.
- Yup, I still prefer my notes by hand. And I find typing sounds annoying in class.. - I said, and just then noticed, he has a laptop on his side of the desk.. Strike number two. You are really digging yourself into a hole slowly.
- Really? So you will find me annoying then? - he has a playful smile on his face at this point, and you felt your face heat up.
- I don't think so, I was just.. You know..speaking..- you really need to stop speaking at this point - You don't look annoying, I think you look quite pleasant, actually. We will be great friends, especially if you are also in the dorms here! - you finally managed to start getting yourself out of this hole with this.
- Oh yeah, we are neighbours I think. I saw your last name on the door next to my room like 2 days ago. - he was way too calm about this and you were going mentally crazy. Neighbours, really? What kind of book plot is this?
Just as you were about to open your mouth to speak, the professor started talking, signalling the beginning of class.
