Chapter Text
Beep..
Beep..
Beep..
His mom lay unresponsive on a pure white hospital mattress. Her chest moving slowly and her skin pale white. The smile that always adorned her face was gone, instead what lay was a dull expression, eyebags had started to creep up on her face yet she still smiled softly fighting off all the tiredness he knew she was facing when he came to visit.
His mom... Has cancer.
Mark Grayson always knew his mom had a terminal illness. He knew that when he left for school his parents would try to discretely leave to go to the hospital whenever he wasn't looking.
He still remembers the day he found out his mom had cancer.
Tiny little mark, he was only 12 years old standing on his tippy toes to look at the bathroom mirror. Leaning forward on the sink as he brushed his teeth getting ready for school.
He rinsed his mouth spitting out the yucky toothpaste that tasted like mint.. He hated it but his mom said it was for grown ups. He was grown! He wont use the strawberry flavor one since hes a big boy!...Even if he likes it alot better.
He shut the door. Grabbing his clothes as he started getting dressed. He had already packed his bag last night since today was monday and he really wanted to get this done faster so he could talk to William about the new seance dog comic!
He was super excited since dad had said yesterday that if he was getting good grades in school he would buy it! Also because he didn't know it wasn't about science heh.
As he put on his bag he heard his mom and dad yelling.
He slowly walked down stairs, tilting his head slightly.
"Uh.. Is everything alright?" his parents stopped yelling instead opting to look at him.
His dad had a large frown on his face. Weird. Did someone die or something?
His mom's face hardened for a second as a soft smile graced her face,
Oh.. Something definitely happened.
"Sweetie.. Come here we need to tell you something." He ran down the stairs. He was worried, he has never seen his parents look like this before.
Standing infront of his mom and dad he noticed the way his dad's hands clenched and the way his mom's face dimmed.
His dad decided to speak."Mark.. Im sure you've seen me and your mother go to the.. Hospital when you leave for school."
Uhm was mom injured? "Yeah?.. "
His mom let out a deep breath "Sweetie what we're trying to say is.. Im sick."
"Sick? How bad is it?" Must be pretty bad if mom had to go the the hospital just for a cold.
His dad sighed putting his hand on his mom's shoulder.
"Its terminal illness Mark.."
"Wh-What..What do you mean mom!" His whole world was crashing down. He read about terminal illnesses it was bad. Really bad, terrifyingly horrible.
He couldn't accept this.. His mom is going to die.
"Mark.."
His expression was of pure despair. What will he do without his mom?! His mother.. He can't be a hero without his mother...!
"Your not dying mom.. Your not...Right.. Right?" tears started to form in his eyes, he couldn't blink it away this time. He let them fall all over his face.
Mom hugged him tight and dad too. His dad spoke rubbing his back in circles "Your mom's strong Mark..it's alright." he could only cry harder hearing this. Clutching at his mom as he shouted desperately "Mom! You can't just leave us!" He let go of his mom instead grabbing a fist full of his dad's shirt "Dad please you can't use your powers to help her?!"
He opened his shut eyes as tears fell continously. His dad could only open his mouth and close it. "It..doesn't work like that sweetie." His mom said holding his hands. He let go. Both his parents hugged him as he continued to cry.
He didn't go to school that day.
