Brisk Walks In the Long Night

Summary:

Inspired by Space Oddity because it's about Remus going outside his world and seeing the same world but from a different place. Both cheery yet melancholy. He'll die in this new world willingly. (Not yet written)

HEAVY WORK IN PROGRESS! EXPECT LONG UPDATE PERIODS (around a month)

All the ships/relationships named have not yet been written yet but will eventually be in the story! (in the works)

The reason why the "author isn't Christian" tag is there is because this story will talk about religious themes repeatedly in the future.

Notes:

This is my first work! I made this prologue a few weeks ago and a lot of things are happened lately so expect late updates.

I do have an idea of where to go next just don't get too excited.

Expect this to be a super slow burn. Like painfully slow, this will hopefully go over all of the Marauders' Hogwarts years with extra problems.

Chapter 1: Prologue: Words Said, Fangs Showed

Summary:

Quick prologue explain of what's up with Remus's parents and an outside narrator perspective of what it was like when Remus got turned.

Notes:

TW: very subtle Implications of suicide (the letter)

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

January 15, 1965

Fenrir Greyback was an unknown name. At least until he was caught by the Ministry of Magic for killing two muggle children. He was locked up and put in for a court hearing.

During this time, there was this one ministry worker, Lyall Lupin, who was all ways there during his hearings and he was the one who exposed Greyback as a werewolf.

One day, while Greyback was locked into his chamber and some people of the wizarding Ministry of Magic were discussing what to do with him.

All their words meant nothing to Greyback since he knew his children would free him, until Lyall said something that caught his attention.

"Werewolves are nothing but soulless, evil creatures, deserving nothing but death." Lyall said heatedly to the other Ministry workers. They continued to speak for a while longer until one by one they left.

Lyall was the last in there when Greyback finally spoke.

"I'm not one to lose their temper but, watch how you speak next time, Lupin. You already made who I really am clear to the wizarding world and now you're insulting my family."

"Say what you want, it's better if you stay put."

Lyall then left, leaving Greyback alone.

January 16, 1965

No one truly expected a breakout to happen that night but it was the ministry's fault for believing Greyback had no pack of his.

Lyall should have known better. He thought he knew better because it was a night before the full moon but evidently he didn't.

Lyall went home that day a bit stressed. There was a murderous werewolf on the loose along with his pack.

Lyall couldn't let it show. He had a wife and kid at home for Godric's sake. They needed to feel secure so Lyall never told his wife, Hope, of what happened in the Ministry that night.

February 16, 1965

It all happened so fast.

Lyall had just walked into his home after his work was finished when he heard a loud cry from his son's room.

Lyall ran up the stairs quickly, his wand in hand and quickly used a spell on the beast that was inside Remus's nursery. The werewolf quickly fled when it was attacked by Lyall.

Was Remus dead? Was I the one who made this happen? I was the one who angered Greyback.

Lyall felt like his mind was cloudy. He quickly moved over to Remus and noticed the blood surround his son and quickly tried to stop the bleeding with the little healing spells he knew.

Remus was bitten.

March 10, 1965

Over the next month, Lyall tried to do anything in his power to stop Remus from becoming a werewolf.

They often went to St. Mungo's for a check up on Remus but it was only with close healers. Lyall didn't want people to know his son was werewolf.

Nothing worked. Remus was stuck a werewolf.

Hope was heartbroken while Lyall was tired.

It was their son's fifth birthday.

The Lupins tried to spend it normally, in their new, smaller house they moved to as a precautionary to prevent another werewolf attack.

Hope and Lyall had just sung "Happy Birthday" when Dumbledor came over with a small gift and news for the Lupins.

May 1965

Despite the efforts to stay strong, Lyall left his wife a letter and left without his wand and any of his belongings.

My dearest, Hope

I cannot bare this any longer. I thought with the news from Albus I'd feel better about Remus's lycanthropy but evidently not.

You often asked me if I was feeling alright and my answer was always the same.

Truth be told, I felt terrible.

I never told you this and I imagine you'll be cross with me but, before our son was attacked, I angered the werewolf that did this to him.

When I chased off the werewolf, I knew I did wrong. I should have told you but I was selfish in not doing so.

The guilt I have isn't leaving so I am going putting myself in exile.

Try to raise our son but if you can't, I understand. Just remember that Hogwarts is waiting for him.

Give my wand to Albus. It can be Remus's wand when he is older.

I love you dearly, Hope. And I feel the same towards our son.

Don't wait for me,

Lyall

Notes:

No, Hope did not give up on Remus. She kept him.
Lyall will only ever be mentioned now.
