“Xavier!” Your voice pulled him out of his trance. He could see you from the classroom window where he was taking his royal lessons. It was mid summer, the air was calm but full of pollen. You waved at him from a distance, beaming as the sun kissed your skin. Gone was most of your usual uniform, you were down to just the white shirt and skirt. Your shoes were in your hand, hair tied up. The sun had blessed your skin with freckles. Your hair had lightened as well, Xavier had noticed. He couldn’t help but feel a little jealous. The sun had seen more of you than he had for the last few weeks. His duties as prince had called for more lessons only he could attend. Things that only a king should know. Xavier never cared to listen to any of them. History and politics had always drained him. He never wanted to be king someday. Xavier wanted to travel, and see the world, the planets and stars. He had dreamed of being an astronaut before his father had crushed that unceremoniously.
Xavier smiled warmly at you, waving back. It was such a beautiful day outside, the sun about to set, the hour golden. You stood there, your hair blew in the wind as you just watched Xavier for a long moment before you came up with an idea.
Xavier watched you approach the building with a mischievous look on your face. He tilted his head, questioning as he watched you walk back into the school building. He didn’t know how you did it, but his royal tutor was suddenly called to the staff room, Xavier’s eyebrow raised as he watched her storm down to the room to see who would disrupt her teaching when your head appeared on the other side of the door.
“Xavier!! Hurry up or she will catch us!” You squeaked as Xavier’s eyes went wide. He pushed all his belongings into his bag and rushed out of the classroom. He grabbed your hand as you both started running towards the backdoor of the school, ignoring any calls or shouts from various teachers and students telling you not to run.
Once you were out of sight, past the large trees and over the river. You darted through the bushes, to a secluded field. It was a special place that you and Xavier often hid when the world was too much. There was a singular oak tree in the middle, surrounded by beautiful blue forget me nots. You often waded through the tall grass and fauna just to sit under the tree. It was a perfect place to watch the world go by. As soon as you saw the tree. Xavier grinned, glancing at you.
“I’ll race you to the tree-”
“I’m not racing you, you’ll cheat!”
“I will not–”
“You always do, I’m not falling for it!!!”
“Well that sucks because… last person there gets the other melon bread!”
“HEY-”
Xavier took off in a sprint, you could see his light evol dancing around him like fireflies as he ran. His beautiful laugh rippled through the air. You smiled and ran after him, not truly minding if it meant he could be a normal teen with you, just for a couple hours. You were neck and neck until he used his evol to teleport the last meter to the tree, touching it proudly before you with a smirk. You gasped as you playfully hit him.
“What was that about not cheating?”
“I’m not sure what you mean, Star.”
“YES YOU DO!” You shrieked as you launched your attack on him. You both tumbled to the ground, laughing. He held you close as you rolled through the grass and the flowers before you both lay there, out of breath and out of will to play anymore. You stared up at the sky but Xavier stared at you. His hand brushed yours, causing you to look at him. A gentle blush bloomed across your face.
“You’re.. Really pretty you know” Xavier smiled fondly as he pushed your hair behind your ear. “Thank you for saving me…”
“Saving you?”
“Yes, I would have had royal history all evening-”
“Sounds fun–”
“You and I both know it’s not fun!”
You laughed and squeezed his hand. A grin plastered across your face.
“What would you do, if you could be whatever you wanted to be?” You whispered to him, your hand intertwined with his. Xavier’s ears went bright red. Your eyes were locked together, a fond smile across his face.
“I’m not sure anymore… but….” He leaned in, and glanced at your lips. Your face flushed a brighter red. “I would want to be next to you still”
“Next to me?” You whispered into the air between the two of you.
“Yeah..” Xavier continued to lean in. He licked his lips, you could feel his breath on your lips.
“Can I…?” He started to ask but you pressed your lips against his. The kiss was small and light before you began to pull away. Xavier stopped you, pulling you back in. He tasted like peppermint. His hands cupped your face for a moment before he kissed all over your face and leaned his forehead against yours. Your eyes flickered closed as you enjoyed the moment.
“Thank you” You scoffed at his praise as you shook your head.
“Whatever for?”
“For seeing me”
You were about to reply when suddenly you heard the sound of someone coming towards you. The pair of you jumped apart and looked away from each other.
“Your majesty-” His royal advisor started to scold Xavier right in front of you, much to your dismay. You frowned, and reached for Xavier’s hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze before he sighed, standing.
“Sorry, I have to go back to class…” He muttered to you. You nodded apologetically as you watched him walk away. He turned back, watching you for a long moment before he continued walking. Nothing was ever perfect forever.
When Xavier turned to his locker after his classes. He was incredibly tired, his heart ached for more time with you. He hated his duties. He hated being a prince. He wanted to spend time with the girl he liked. It wasn’t fair. He opened his locker and suddenly a bundle of forget me nots tied together with a small yellow ribbon with a star charm attached to them fell out. He stared at it, a small fond smile and blush formed over his face. He looked deeper into his locker, seeing a note he knew was from you. Your periwinkle paper was hard to miss. He glanced over his shoulder, making sure no one was looking at him before he opened your note.
Dear Xavier,
I’m sorry our time earlier was cut short, I wish we got to spend more time together but life is always getting in the way! I just thought I’d remind you that next week we’re going to see the meteor shower together and I’m super excited to go with you! I can’t wait.
I hope that next year we can go again!
