Chapter Text
May, 1999 — Prologue
Daphne Greengrass hated her job at the Ministry.
In the year following her tenure at Hogwarts, she had worked hard to obtain a portfolio that should have secured a job in virtually any Department at a senior level.
“They'll be fawning over you,” her sister had promised. “The Head of each Department will be competing—no, begging you to come work for them. I'm sure of it, Daffy.”
Alas, Daphne's tentative confidence had shattered on the day of her application, because what had the Ministry actually done? They had the gall to lump her with dunderheads who couldn't tell pearl dust from powdered moonstone, and all because they still had job vacancies in the wake of Voldemort’s reign.
And thus, Daphne Greengrass, with more NEWT's and qualifications than fingers on her own two hands, had ended up working as a secretary in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement.
Dear Morgana, how far Wizarding Britain had fallen.
The only upside of her new job, she supposed, was that she occasionally got to see Harry Potter out and about.
