Work Text:

Chuuya Nakahara wasn't the most sentimental person on Earth. At least if you only knew him on the surface level. Below the surface, he was surprisingly romantic, or at least that was what his boyfriend, Dazai Osamu said.

He wasn't sure how, exactly, he was romantic, but he was glad that Dazai thought so, because despite saying that he hated the brunet on the daily, he actually loved him very much.

And he was going to show that today in a way that would for sure catch the usually all-knowing bandaged man off-guard.

Chuuya had never considered the idea of marriage. It had always felt like something far away for him, because he was a former experiment. He had always convinced himself that nobody would love him enough to want forever, because he wasn't really human.

And sure, Dazai had opinions on Chuuya's humanity, constantly insisting that the ginger was the most human person he'd ever met, but Chuuya disagreed, but it had gotten to the point where he didn't argue with his boyfriend anymore.

But now that he actually had someone who loved him for him, and who he loved in return, he actually had been considering marriage more and more as of late. So much so that he actually went and got a custom ring designed.

Yes, he was going to propose to his boyfriend.

On Valentine's Day, which was rather corny, but he knew that Dazai would appreciate the sentiment, especially since he loved it whenever Chuuya did anything even remotely romantic.

And… in the grand scheme of things, a Valentine's proposal was pretty damn romantic. Corny, yes. Romantic, also yes. Something Dazai would appreciate, yes. Again.

But the ring box was heavy in his pocket. And he was nervous. More nervous than he had been for anything ever in his life. He didn't think it would cause him to have a near panic attack the day before. That was ridiculous.

He loved his boyfriend. He knew that his boyfriend loved him back, and yes was the only answer that Chuuya expected. But there was a fear settling in his chest, one that he couldn't brush off. He was afraid that he wasn't enough for Dazai.

He was afraid that he really wasn't human enough for Dazai to want to marry him.

What if Chuuya wasn't alive in the way that Dazai needed?

Dazai needed someone who trusted in their humanity.

Chuuya wasn't that person.

But he wanted to be that person anyway. He wanted to be the person that his stupid, stinky, mackerel relied on and loved more than anyone else in the world.

But he was scared.

Terrified, even.

The sun's light streamed through the blinds of the shared bedroom. It was too early to be awake, but the brunet man seemed to have a different opinion.

"Happy Valentine's Day, my darling Chibi!" Dazai chirped, peppering kisses all over Chuuya's face. "C'mon… wake up! I want to have a whoooollleeee day with you."

Chuuya groaned and turned over to the side to avoid the relentless kiss attack from his boyfriend, because he was not in the mood to be waking up this early. Usually, he was the one who woke up early, and Dazai hated mornings, but today, apparently, he was waking up early.

"Mmm Osamu… five more minutes…" Chuuya groaned, blinking his eyes open to look into his partner's brown ones. "Please…"

"Nooo I want breakfast." pouted the brunet, rolling over so he was facing away from Chuuya. This made Chuuya unnaturally sad so he sat up and climbed over Dazai, berating him with his very own kiss attack.

"Demanding breakfast this early is cruel." he pointed out, rolling his eyes affectionately at his boyfriend between kisses.

"Says the one kissing me relentlessly." Dazai retorted, wrapping his arms around the ginger so that they were locked against each other.

Chuuya relented and kissed his lips, making Dazai sigh happily and melt against the former's lips. "Fine. I'll make you chocolate waffles, in heart shapes, because you're sappy as fuck like that and like that stuff."

"Mm Chibi is too good to me. Plus, aren't you the sappy one if you're making them?"

"You were going to request that they be in heart shapes if I didn't say it first, and I prefer not to deal with your fuckass stinky whining." Chuuya snapped, but he punctuated the end of his sentence with a kiss to Dazai's nose before rolling off of him, just to show that he wasn't really mad at him.

Dazai giggled and sat up, the blanket that was around him pooling around his waist. "You know me so well."

"Of course I do. We've been dating since we were fifteen." Chuuya said, voice soft and loving. He wasn't usually this affectionate, or, he thought that, but today, of course, was a special occasion.

"And these seven years have been the best seven years of my life." Dazai said with a grin, standing out of bed, stretching his arms.

"You get dressed with your bandages if you want them on today, I'll have the waffles ready when you're done. Hopefully. They might take a few minutes more because of the heart shape, though." Chuuya said, ushering Osamu towards the closet so he could sneakily grab the ring box from his bedside table and slip it into his pajama pant pocket.

He knew that proposing over breakfast wasn't the most romantic thing ever, but… he had a method to his madness.

There was a reason he was doing it.

And it would make sense soon. Eventually. Chuuya wasn't sure if he even got it himself.

But it would work.

When Dazai emerged from their bedroom nearly 15 minutes later (wrangling with removing his bandages, the ones that he'd worn to bed to prevent scratching at his scars), Chuuya was almost done the second batch of waffles.

"You took your sweet time, mackerel." Chuuya huffed, but gestured to the waffles that were plated on the island situated in the middle of their kitchen. "Happy Valentine's Day, idiot."

"My Valentine's Day would be even happier if my Chibi had asked me to be his Valentine, but nooooo." Dazai pouted, leaning against the island, without even touching the waffles.

"I had a reason for that." Chuuya replied.

"You're breaking up with me?!" The brunet panicked, a terrified expression crossing his face.

The ginger shook his head almost immediately. "No! Obviously not. The opposite, actually."

Dazai seemed to need to take a couple minutes to process that, so Chuuya just decided that he needed to get on with it before he passed out from the nerves.

"The reason I didn't ask you before today is because I have an even bigger question to ask you this morning." Chuuya said, getting down onto one knee, much to Dazai's surprise, and pulling out the ring box.

Inside the box was a silver ring, with a black diamond on the top, with little black ones surrounding it. It was beautiful. Exactly what he knew Dazai wanted.

And Dazai… well. He looked on the verge of tears and maybe passing out from shock, and Chuuya hadn't even popped the question yet.

"Chuu-Chuuya… you're…" he stammered, but Chuuya shushed him before he could continue.

"Let me finish. I wanted to ask you, instead of asking you to be my Valentine just for today, maybe you'd like to be my Valentine forever. As in… Dazai Osamu, love of my life, and yeah, pain in my ass but I love you anyway, will you make me the happiest idiot alive and marry me?" Chuuya forced out the last words because he was getting choked up as well. But not from happiness—from nerves.

What if Dazai said no? What if he wasn't ready for marriage?

Dazai gasped and started nodding frantically, before sinking to his knees, laughing through happy tears. "Yes! Yes! Oh my goodness yes! Of course I'll marry you you idiot Chibi!"

All of Chuuya's doubts were crushed, and he pulled Dazai into his arms and locked their lips together, because he was crying now too.

"Fuck. Stop crying before I put the ring on." Chuuya huffed, but he knew that he was crying as well.

"You're crying too!"

"I know. I'm so fuckin' happy. You said yes…" Chuuya breathed, still a little shocked as he slid the ring onto Osamu's finger. A perfect fit.

"What else would I have said?"

Chuuya just kissed him again.

And again.

And he wouldn't ever have to worry about not being able to do it again, because Dazai was his. Forever now. Or he would be, in a short time.

"Thank you… I love you so much…" Dazai whimpered, hugging Chuuya tight. "I don't deserve Chuuya, but I'll try anyways."

"Love your dumbass too."
