Caitlyn had tried to be quiet. She had really tried. When she woke up at 2 a.m with Vi wrapped around her, her strong arms hugging her and her hand resting on her pregnant belly she thought that she would just snuggle back into her partner and fall back asleep. But then the craving started. Her little muffin started to drive her crazy. She had never been one to have a sweet tooth, that was mostly Vi's job.
But that night it felt like the world would cave in if she didn't have something sweet.
She needed something sweet.
And when she glanced back and gazed at Vi's sleeping face and the way her lips were slightly parted as a quiet snore left her chest, the only thing in her mind was the softness of her partner's voice as she called her cupcake and her stomach rumbled as she thought about having that exact pastry. So she made a split second decision, making her very best to not wake her sleeping partner, slipping from her arms much to her heartache and making her way to the kitchen. Her sock covered feet pattered against the tiles as she walked, the house eerily quiet. It had been a while since she last had to sneak around the Kiramman Mansion quietly and if she told the teenage Caitlyn that she had to do it at this stage of her life because her pregnancy cravings were awful, the younger version of herself would cackle loudly.
She grabbed everything she needed, a bit annoyed that the only thing it would be missing would be chocolate chips until she noticed a chocolate bar, deciding to chop it up to replace the chips. She didn’t even dare to hum, knowing that Vi would be able to hear it. Unluckily for her at that moment, but luckily for her most of the time, the redhead had always been a light sleeper. The only reason she managed to slip unnoticed so far is most likely because her wife took a double shift at work to balance out the amount of shopping they had to get done before the birth and she was exhausted. Her hands stopped for a second, her eyes filling with tears as she thought about Vi’s tired body and the way she was trying so hard not to allow the blue-haired woman to notice it.
God, she loved her partner.
She snapped out of it as quickly as she went into it, her fingers drying the few tears that managed to get loose before focusing back. She had gotten far into the recipe, her eggs perfectly whipped and gathering the dry ingredients she stretched to grab the bowl she would usually use when baking. She kept it on the top shelf, barely used for the most time so keeping it out of reach was the best thing, allowing the more used things to be easily accessed. But how she loathed it at that moment, her fingers gripping the edge as her pregnancy stomach made her stand slightly farther away than she was used to, making her lose grip of the bowl and causing a ruckus as it fell.
She prayed for a moment that the clattering hadn’t woken Vi up, but it went unanswered as she heard the hurried footsteps of her partner as she made her way downstairs running.
“Caitlyn?!” Her face was still drowsy, the rude awakening forcing her to try and rub the residual sleep from her face. The redhead was obviously scared, her mind thinking the worst after hearing the noises. “Are you alright? Are you hurt?” She tried to step closer to her, stopping only because she saw Caitlyn’s hand telling her to stay in place.
“There’s glass,” the woman whispered, her voice rough and filled with sadness as she started to tear up. “I’m sorry!” She sobbed as she tried to grab the biggest piece of glass.
“Don’t!” Vi was fast on her feet, approaching her partner as safely as she could. “I’ll pick it up, sit on the counter until I tell you,” she sternly pointed back as she walked to grab the broom.
Feeling defeated, the woman did what she was told to, thanking to any deity above that her arms were still strong enough to pull herself up until she sat on the counter, her hand covering her protruding belly. She had never felt so useless. Watching Vi pick up the mess she had made, making sure to throw away the glass safely and having to throw away the ingredients she had used so far, in case the glass had fallen into them made her start sobbing, her free hand coming up to hide her face.
“I’m so sorry,” she said between the sobs. “I tried to be quiet! I promise I did. It just slipped! And when it fell it dropped over the glasses I had on the counter and…” Her voice cracked as she tried to explain herself, still hiding her face from Vi’s eyes.
She felt warm fingers around her wrist, gently pulling her palm away from her face. Vi’s smile was the first thing she saw, followed by a look of love in her eyes. “It’s alright, cupcake.” She whispered softly, her thumb drawing circles on her inner wrist. “You didn’t want to wake me, huh?”
The pregnant woman hiccuped as she nodded, her sobs quieting after a few moments. “You’ve been working so hard, I didn’t want to wake you for such a stupid thing!”
Vi couldn’t stop herself as she leaned down, kissing Caitlyn as softly as she could. The blue-haired woman’s legs instantly spread to allow her partner to step closer, their kiss never deepening. “It’s alright, baby. Everything is alright. Yes, I am tired. I won’t stand here and try to deny it, but Cait you have to understand,” her hand cupped the woman’s cheek and her grin widened when her wife snuggled into her palm. “Waking up because you had a craving and you want me to buy something or you want me to make something for you will never,” the woman tried to avoid the redhead’s gaze but was forced to meet her eyes again. “Never,” she repeated, “will be a chore. It is my pleasure to wake up and make something for you. I love taking care of you, and I love taking care of our little muffin. Anytime you wake me up because you need something I feel so fucking happy because it reminds me that this,” she rested her free hand over Caitlyn’s stomach, a twinkle appearing in her eyes as she felt the fabric stretching over the ever-growing belly. “This is real. When you ask me something it makes me so happy because it means you need me because you are growing our child, baby.”
By the end of the monologue Caitlyn was once again sobbing, her arms flying forward and wrapping around Vi’s neck to hug her tightly as she cried on her neck. “I’m sorry for breaking everything though,” she whispered after a while.
“We can go shopping tomorrow, baby. Now tell me what you wanted to eat.”
The blue-haired woman blushed as she pulled back, nibbling on her lower lip. “Cupcakes,” she finally admitted, causing a proudness to appear on her partner’s face.
“That’s ‘cause I call you cupcake, right? I knew you loved the nickname. A batch of cupcakes coming right up, cupcake.” She winked before leaving another kiss on the woman’s lips.
As Caitlyn watched Vi preparing the sweets she could only think that she was an idiot for not waking her up before, not only because she really needed her help, but rather because watching Vi’s back as she prepared the batter was a sight to behold.
“Alright, beautiful. We will have to wait for a bit,” she whispered as she placed the cupcakes on the oven. “Want to go to the couch and cuddle?”
She instantly nodded, moving to get off the counter but being stopped by her partner.
“Come on then,” Vi said, a smirk on her lips as she made the woman wrap her legs around her waist and pick her up from the counter, carrying her to the couch.
“Vi! I could’ve walked!”
“You could have, yes. Doesn’t mean you should walk. Now stop complaining and cuddle me.”
They laid down, Caitlyn taking her place draped over her wife and snuggling into her neck, the sweetness of her cologne making her craving calm down long enough to lull her to sleep. It wouldn’t be until a while later that someone gently coaxed her awake, her eyes instantly focusing on Vi crouching next to her.
“Hope you had a nice nap, baby.” Neither of them cared that it was approaching 5 a.m. “The cupcakes are out and cold enough to eat, I placed them on the fridge for a bit to try and get them to an edible temperature. Want me to bring some here or would you want for me to carry you to the table?” Her voice was soft and quiet and it brought a small smile to her wife’s face. The woman simply opened her arms as she tried to sit up, asking without words to be carried to the table. The redhead just chuckled and did as asked.
The second the cupcake scent hit her nose the craving came back with vengeance. Her eyes widened, sleep long forgotten as she sat down and instantly reached forward for one of the pastries, not even waiting for Vi to sit down next to her before devouring it. A moan slipped from her lips as the sweetness exploded on her tongue, glancing at her wife with a giddy smile. “Thank you,” she said, her voice still rough with sleep.
“Anything for you two, cupcake.” She whispered back, leaning in to kiss her cheek before snatching her own cupcake and joining her in their early morning snacking.
