Work Text:
“Daniel?”
He doesn’t even look up from the translation he’s working on. “Yes, Vala?”
“Why do the people of Earth have a holiday named after me?”
This gets his attention and he looks up to see Vala fiddling with his magnifying glass, something he recalls Jack doing quite often in the past.
He sighs. “What are you talking about?”
She sets the magnifying glass on the workbench and flops down onto her chair. “Cameron was talking to Carolyn the other day when he was in the infirmary. I overheard them.”
“You shouldn’t eavesdrop, Vala,” Daniel chides, but there’s no real bite to his words.
She waves an errant hand at him. “Never mind that. Anyway, I heard him ask her what she was doing on Vala Times Day and she told him that she doesn’t usually celebrate that holiday.”
Daniel stifles a laugh. Laughing would only encourage Vala and that’s the last thing that he wants. “No, not Vala Times Day, it’s Valentine’s Day. It’s a holiday named after St. Valentine who was a Roman saint in the 3rd century…”
“I don’t need a history lesson,” she interrupts. She’s pouting on her chair now, arms crossed over her chest.
“You want a holiday all about you, don’t you?” Because of course she does, she’s Vala.
“Well of course I do! Who wouldn’t?”
Daniel shakes his head. “We can celebrate you on your birthday. Valentine’s Day is…uhh something else.”
“Well, what is it?” She’s sitting back up now, expectant.
He sighs. “Go ask Mitchell.”
Vala shrugs and scampers out of his office, presumably to find Mitchell.
He knows he’s only delaying the inevitable. As soon as she figures out what Valentine’s Day is, he’s in deep trouble.
