Ben opens his mouth, fumbles for words and finds none, then closes it again. Handsome, Washington says, as though it were any other meaningless trifle to be thrown into conversation, as though Ben's stomach hasn't dropped clean through the floor, as though he could be found anything even approximating the word when placed next to Washington. God above.
Benjamin takes Bradford's slander to heart. Caleb, as always, doesn't help matters.
