Work Text:
February 1st
Wednesday Addams didn’t mean to eavesdrop. It’s just, Enid Sinclair isn’t exactly a quiet talker. Neither is Yoko Tanaka for that matter.
So when Wednesday hears her name float from Enid’s dorm while she’s currently unlocking her own door, she can’t help but stop and listen.
“Sooo you and Wednesday have been dating a while now,” Yoko says suggestively.
Wednesday almost slams her door shut right then and there.
“Only like four months,” Enid replies.
“Uh huh. And how many days?”
Five. Wednesday thinks.
“Five.” Enid says sheepishly.
“Nauseatingly cute.”
Wednesday’s own annoyed scowl is matched by the exasperation she hears in her girlfriend’s tone. “What’s your point, Yoko?”
“Well,” the vampire continues suggestively. “It’s February. Big time of the year for you guys. First Valentine’s Day and all.”
“Oh…” Enid mumbles. “Right.”
“Oh come on, don’t act like you didn’t know that,” Yoko says incredulously.
“No, I did,” the werewolf concedes.
“But…?”
“I don’t know…” Enid sighs. “Wednesday’s not that big on holidays and gifts.”
“She gave you that amazing enchanted bracelet for Christmas.”
“I know! And that was incredible. I more mean like Valentine’s Day specifically. Goes against everything Wednesday core, you know? Pink and affectionate and capitalist and all that.”
“Well I hear she’s super rich so the capitalist part shouldn’t be an issue.”
“Yoko!” Enid reprimands with a laugh.
“Just saying. If you guys ever get divorced, I want part of your alimony.”
“Oh my god,” Enid groans. “You’re the worst.”
Wednesday silently agrees.
“That wasn’t a no.”
“I’m not giving you my alimony!” Enid exclaims.
“Ooo so you’re in it for the long haul, wolfie?” Yoko’s smug grin is palpable in her tone.
Wednesday is sure Enid is blushing. And maybe she is a bit too.
“That’s not what I meant!”
“So you don’t want to marry her?”
“That’s not what I meant either!” The wolf squeaks.
Yoko’s hearty laugh rings throughout the dorm.
“Ugh, this is getting off track,” Enid grumbles.
Yoko snickers some more. “Right. We were talking about Valentine’s Day and how you think Wednesday doesn’t like it.”
“I mean, it’s not a stretch to assume so. Honestly I’d be kinda surprised if she even knows what the day is. She hasn’t mentioned it at all. Besides, I don’t need all the Valentine’s Day pomp and circumstance.”
“But you’d like it,” Yoko says knowingly.
Wednesday can practically see her girlfriend’s responding shrug.
“I’d never change Wednesday, or force her into something she doesn’t want to do,” Enid says sincerely. “I love her. Even if she goes her whole life without knowing Valentine’s Day exists. Or wants to dig up graves instead of celebrating it.”
“That’s probably super romantic to her,” Yoko points out.
“Yeah…I probably shouldn’t mention it,” Enid agrees.
Wednesday doesn’t hear any of the conversation after that. Too caught up on three words.
I love her.
Neither of them had ever said that to each other before. Wednesday sometimes sensed Enid wanted to, but so far the wolf had held back. Which Wednesday appreciated since the words were the most terrifying three words to exist in the English language. And yet, it felt right hearing them from Enid’s mouth.
She quietly opens her door and walks up to her desk. “Thing.”
The hand scuttles out of his mini house.
“We need to do something bigger for Valentine’s Day.”
Thing signs. You already made a reservation at the best Greek restaurant.
“I know, but it’s not enough,” Wednesday insists.
The hand taps his finger in thought. Then pulls out his phone. Yes, Thing has a phone now. Though Wednesday still didn’t. Much to Enid’s chagrin.
Thing scrolls a bit until he finds what he’s looking for and nudges the device over excitedly.
Wednesday squints at the search browser. “Valentine’s Day week? This really is a capitalist regime.”
Thing shrugs in agreement.
“Fine.” Wednesday huffs. She frowns at the list. “Thing, get your credit card. We have some work to do.”
The hand practically beams as he pulls the black card from his wallet.
February 4th
Enid sighs as she lounges back in her chair at the library, staring up at the ceiling of the private study room they were in.
“Your powers of concentration are truly remarkable,” Wednesday deadpans from where she sits next to the blonde, taking carefully handwritten notes.
“I’ve been studying for hours!”
“38 minutes.”
“Same thing!”
“Interesting arithmetic.”
“Ugh. Not everyone can be as perfect and focused as you.” Even as she says it, Enid leans over and kisses the seer’s cheek.
“I’m not perfect,” Wednesday grumbles, cheeks slightly flushed.
“Oh I know,” Enid laughs. “I was just speaking generally.”
Wednesday scowls at that. Causing Enid to just laugh some more and kiss her on the lips this time.
“Don’t say it-”
“Cute.”
“...Insufferable wolf.”
Said wolf only grins in victory.
Her phone chimes.
“OMG!” Enid squeals as she reads the message. “Divina is taking Yoko to a play tonight as an early surprise!”
Wednesday stiffens ever so slightly, figuring this was the perfect time to put her plan in motion. She feigns ignorance. “Early? For what?”
“Oh…um…nothing. It’s Yoko’s birthday soon is all.”
The seer is well aware the vampire’s birthday is approximately eight months away, but she plays along anyway. “I wasn’t aware such festivities were in order to celebrate when someone enters this miserable existence.”
Enid rolls her eyes. “It’s just a nice gesture!”
“More like abysmal.”
Enid sighs and pushes down her disappointment. Guess she wasn’t getting any grand gestures for Valentine’s Day then. Heck, she may not even get anything for her birthday at this rate. But honestly…she could be okay with that. It’s not like her parents did anything great for her birthday growing up anyway.
She leans over and presses another kiss to the seer’s lips. “Never change, Wends.”
A wave of affection for the werewolf floods Wednesday all at once. Enid really meant it when she said she’d never force her into anything. She meant it when she said she accepted Wednesday completely just as she was. And she meant it when she said she’d still love Wednesday even if she never acknowledged a Valentine’s Day in her life.
The seer had never wanted to celebrate Valentine’s Day as much as she did at that moment. Because if anyone deserved it, it was Enid Sinclair.
And now, her plan was set in place.
February 7th: Rose Day
“Hey babycakes, how was your day?” Enid casually waltzes into Wednesday’s dorm.
The raven gives her obligatory huff at the nickname, but nods all the same. “Sufficiently dreadful. And yours?”
“Super weird.”
Wednesday bites her cheek to keep her lips from twitching upward. “Explain.”
“Well, today I was sitting outside after practice and this bird attacked me!”
“Attacked?”
“Well no, not really. It just landed on the seat next to me. Which isn’t that strange, I know. But the weird part was, it was carrying a rose in its beak!”
“A rose.”
“Yes!” Enid squeaks. “And then even weirder. It placed it right next to my hand. And then I swear it nudged it towards me!”
“So did you take it?” Wednesday asks, already knowing the answer.
“I mean yeah, I didn’t know what to do! I was scared the bird would peck me or something if I didn’t. It was really quite insistent.”
“Do you still have it?”
“Uh yeah.” Enid produces the rose from her bag, still in pristine condition.
Wednesday takes the flower and pretends to study it. As if she hadn’t hand-picked it herself only hours earlier. “A white rose. Intriguing meaning.”
“Oh, I don’t know the meanings of flowers very well,” the wolf mutters with a frown. “But isn’t that so weird?”
“Indeed.”
“Like, did the bird just pick it up somewhere and decide to drop it off with me?”
Wednesday has to turn around to not give herself away, knowing how well Enid could read her microexpressions. “Perhaps.”
Enid shrugs and takes the rose back. “Anyway. It’s super pretty. I think I’ll put it in some water.”
“A logical choice.”
The wolf nods and kisses the seer’s cheek before going back to her room and placing the rose in a cup of water on her desk.
Later that night she looks up the meaning of a white rose. Purity. Young Love. Loyalty.
Huh.
It never occurs to her that the bird that gave her the rose was a raven.
February 8th: Propose Day/Confession Day
Wednesday had never told Enid this, but since they started dating, full moons had become one of her favorite nights of the month. She had always had a mild obsession with werewolves since she was a child, and that obsession had only grown exponentially since Enid let her observe her transformation a few months ago. It was truly breathtaking to behold.
Enid, on the other hand, doesn’t share the same enthusiasm for full moons.
“Ugh,” the werewolf groans. “This full moon has the worst timing. We have that huge philosophy exam tomorrow! It should be illegal for them to schedule exams after transformation nights.”
Wednesday doesn’t disagree with the sentiment. “I’ll be sure your wolf doesn’t tire itself out too much tonight so you can get adequate rest.”
Enid looks over at her girlfriend with big puppy dog eyes. “Really?”
“Of course, mi lobo.” Wednesday whispers, not even fully registering what she’s saying. It was hard to think when Enid looked at her like that.
“Wends, I…” Enid trails off. Not quite having the guts to finish that sentence yet. “You’re the best girlfriend ever.”
Wednesday’s heart rate picks up at the almost admission. Yet surprisingly she doesn’t have the urge to flee. Instead she leans closer to the blonde, inviting the girl to rest her head on her shoulder. Which Enid happily takes her up on.
A few hours later, the wolf and raven are out in the fields, under the stars. Enid’s wolf form prances around happily, chasing after a white ball that Wednesday throws. The seer finds her lips constantly twitching upwards as she watches the playful beast before her.
After a while, Wednesday puts the ball away. Causing the wolf to pout and whine.
“It’s time to rest, mon loup. You’ll thank yourself in the morning.” Wednesday sits on the blanket she brought and pats the ground, inviting the wolf to sit next to her.
With a slight huff, the werewolf finally does. They both sit there for a while, looking up at the stars. Eventually Wednesday starts pointing out constellations, remembering how Enid had said she enjoys listening to her talk while she was in wolf form.
Soon the wolf’s eyes start to droop closed, much to Wednesday’s satisfaction. She digs in her bag to grab another blanket to throw over the beast’s shoulders.
A tree branch snaps behind them.
Immediately Enid jumps up on all fours, growling at the figure that had caused the noise.
Wednesday turns with a frown, surprised anyone was out here so far from the school. Her eyes flash when she realizes it wasn’t someone that found them, but something.
Another werewolf, a male, growls from where he stands only a few yards away. Harsh yellow eyes pierce the night. Wednesday can tell this wolf lacks the control Enid has.
The predator howls.
Enid steps in front of Wednesday. Bearing her fangs and howling just as loudly back.
Wednesday instinctively reaches for the knife in her jacket. But she knows it wouldn’t do much. It wasn’t silver. She had gotten rid of all her silver possessions when she started dating a werewolf.
“Enid.”
The wolf hits Wednesday with her tail as if to say, stay out of this.
The other werewolf lunges.
Enid fearlessly jumps to meet him. She twists in the air, avoiding his claws. Then her large paw meets his snout with a staggering blow. He lands with a thud and whimper. Enid lands effortlessly back on her feet and snarls at him again. Gnashing her canines.
Wednesday just stares in awe. Knife hanging uselessly by her side.
The other werewolf stumbles to his feet.
Enid growls, daring him to attack again.
The other wolf licks at his wounds and sulks off, tail between his legs.
It’s only when he’s disappeared into the woods many yards away that Enid finally turns back to face Wednesday. Yellow eyes wide in concern.
Wednesday grunts as the wolf’s snout hits her cheek, nuzzling aggressively. “I’m fine, my lobo. You didn’t even let him get near me.”
The wolf lets out a huff of breath as if to say, he still got too close.
“There is no cause for concern,” Wednesday insists again. She pushes the snout back a bit. “Now let me see you.”
Carefully trained eyes scan the werewolf in front of her for any injuries. She’s relieved when she finds none. And is more than a little impressed.
“You were supposed to have a restful evening,” Wednesday mutters gruffly.
The wolf snorts.
Wednesday’s brown eyes catch in the blue-yellow ones before her. Instinctively she raises her hands to cup the werewolf’s head. The full moon illuminates the field around them.
“Eres magnífica, mi lobo.” Wednesday murmurs, resting her forehead to the wolf’s. “Both parts of you.”
Wednesday is sure she’s never said anything so affectionate in her life. But she means every word of it. She only hopes Enid remembers this in the morning.
The werewolf closes its eyes, seeming to absorb the words. Then it lays on the ground and gently tugs Wednesday down along with it. A large paw is thrown protectively over the seer.
Soon the wolf is snoring soundly, completely curled around Wednesday under the full moon. The raven just runs her hand through soft fur.
“Perfecta.”
Enid is exhausted the next day. But she doesn’t care. Wednesday was safe. And had called her magnificent.
February 9th: Chocolate Day
“Hey, where did you get those?” Yoko points at the chocolates that Enid was currently eating.
The blonde frowns. “Oh um, I don’t know. The lunch lady just gave them to me. Said they were free.”
“What? I didn’t get any!” Yoko rushes up to the cafeteria line.
She’s back within minutes.
“The lady said she had no idea what I was talking about when I asked about free chocolate.”
“Huh,” Enid says in confusion. “Maybe ask someone else?”
“Nah I’m not going back up there. The lady was kinda rude.” Yoko squints at the chocolates again. “Damn. Those look like really expensive chocolates though.”
“They taste like it too,” Enid agrees. “Guess it’s my lucky day?”
“Yeah…I guess…” Yoko’s eyes narrow at the short, braided haired girl who just came into view.
“Hey Wends,” Enid greets, oblivious to the vampire staring down her girlfriend suspiciously.
“Hey Addams, are you a chocolate fan?” Yoko asks.
Wednesday’s eyes flash ever so slightly as she looks over Enid’s head at the vampire. “No.”
“Are you sure?”
“Wednesday doesn’t like sweets, Yoko.” Enid interjects, still oblivious.
“Hmmm, sure,” Yoko says knowingly.
Wednesday sits down and glares at the vampire. “I do like garlic though.”
That gets Yoko to back down. Besides, it was kinda totally adorable.
If Enid ever figured it out.
February 10th: Teddy Day
“Oh thank goodness you’re here,” Enid mutters as she sits down at their usual study table in the library. “I was worried the fire in the greenhouse had something to do with you.”
“It did.” Wednesday says in complete seriousness.
“What?? That’s on the other side of campus! How did you…you know what? I don’t even want to know.”
Wednesday smirks ever so slightly, which Enid still thinks so should be illegal.
“My notifications have been blowing up about it,” the blonde sighs. “People are mad that their flower arrangements all went up in smoke.”
“Arrangements for what?” The seer probes knowingly.
“Uh…stuff.” Enid stutters, still not wanting to mention Valentine’s Day and make Wednesday feel obligated about anything. Besides, if Wednesday was against flowers enough to burn down the greenhouse, she surely would be against the very idea of Valentine’s Day.
“How descriptive,” Wednesday mutters. Though she’s still impressed by Enid’s honor. The wolf really wasn’t going to mention the holiday.
“Says the one who won’t say how she is involved in all this in the first place,” Enid shoots back.
“Blame the pyro who insulted me earlier. I tripped him. He sent a wayward fireball. And that was that for the greenhouse.”
“He insulted you??” Enid asks angrily. “Then he definitely deserved it.”
Wednesday’s too embarrassed to say that the pyro had actually insulted Enid, and Wednesday had gone a bit, well, Addams on him. The greenhouse was just collateral damage, and probably in better shape than the pyro honestly. It was quite a productive day overall.
They sit and study for a while before Enid starts to pack up. “I got to get ready for dance.”
Wednesday nods, well aware of the time and her girlfriend’s schedule. She instinctively looks over, anticipating the kiss Enid places on her lips right after.
“Bye,” the wolf whispers with a bright smile. Leaning in for another quick kiss before pulling back and heading out of the library.
Wednesday will never admit that she watches her go.
Back at the dorm, Enid bursts into her room to a bewildering sight. On her pillow sits a small, bright pink teddy bear.
“Uh Yoko?” Enid picks up the bear and examines it. It was quite cute. “Where is this from?”
The vampire shrugs. “It was in a bag outside our door when I got here with your name on it.”
Enid brushes her hand over the fur. It was ridiculously soft. And the color perfectly matched the rest of her stuffed animals. “Huh. Maybe it’s from the RA? She was handing out Valentine’s bags earlier this week.”
Yoko gives her friend a long, hard look before nodding. “Yeah, maybe.”
Or maybe it was Wednesday? No, that can’t be right. Enid shakes the hopeful thought from her head. Wednesday was literally allergic to color. No way would she have bought this. Plus she also clearly hated Valentine’s Day and everything about it. So this gift wouldn’t make sense coming from her in general.
Either way, the bear was still adorable. She puts it on her desk next to the white rose.
February 11th: Promise Day
“You know, when I said I’d help you on a case, this wasn’t exactly what I had in mind.”
“Yes, I was hoping for better weather,” Wednesday says evenly.
“I know, this rain sucks.” Enid nods, wiping the water from her eyes as she follows her girlfriend deeper into the woods.
“I meant I was hoping for a thunderstorm.”
“Of course.” Enid rolls her eyes. “Where are we even going? It feels like we’ve been walking for miles. I don’t even know where we came from at this point.”
“We’re nearly there,” the seer says cryptically.
The wolf sighs but continues to follow dutifully. Finally they stumble upon their destination. A small, rundown, totally creepy shack in the middle of the woods. Even in broad daylight, Enid has absolutely no desire to go into it.
“Let me guess,” Enid mutters. “This is the serial killer’s hideout.”
“He’s only committed second degree manslaughter so far.”
“Oh. Great. I feel a lot better.”
Wednesday glances at the werewolf. “You can stay out here if you’d like. Thing scoped the parameter. It should be safe.”
“No way am I letting you go in there alone,” Enid shakes her head.
Wednesday studies her girlfriend’s face. The determination. The bravery. The willingness to follow her into danger just to make sure she wasn’t alone.
All at once, the truth pierces Wednesday’s chest. Something she had known for a while, but never allowed herself to admit until now.
She loves Enid. It was that simple. That inevitable. And surprisingly not as terrifying as she once thought it would be.
The seer holds out her hand. Enid looks at it in surprise, unused to Wednesday initiating contact, especially on cases. She grabs the hand before the girl can change her mind.
Wednesday pushes open the door. Flashlight in one hand, Enid’s in the other. She feels the wolf’s grip tighten when they enter. For good reason too. The place is a disgusting mess of trash and garage tools with suspicious red marks on them. Even Wednesday finds she doesn’t want to linger too long.
“Ugh, this place is awful. I can smell the blood.” Enid wrinkles her nose. “And not the good kind that Yoko drinks. Which is a sentence I never thought I’d say.”
“Do you sense anything else?” Wednesday asks earnestly. Eager to find something so this trip wasn’t in vain.
Enid closes her eyes and concentrates her werewolf senses. “Uh yeah. Over there under the tarp.”
Wednesday lets go of Enid’s hand to pull a knife out and carefully approach the tarp.
The werewolf’s claws come out instinctively. “Wends be-”
The tarp is ripped back.
“Careful.”
There’s nothing there. Except a sharp, bloody piece of glass.
“Murder weapon.” Wednesday nods and pulls out her old fashioned camera to take a photo. Enid can hear the satisfaction in the seer’s tone. Which ultimately makes the trip worth it.
“I have to say,” Enid starts while the seer finishes up the photos. “This almost rivals our first date.”
Wednesday raises an eyebrow as she packs up her bag.
“I mean, nothing will beat getting trapped in the basement of an asylum during a power outage with a zombie. But you know, finding a serial killer’s hideout a million miles in the woods in the pouring rain? Close second.”
“And here I thought you liked our time staking out Crackstone’s graveyard the best,” Wednesday says with a hint of amusement.
“Oh yeah, I forgot about that,” Enid shivers. “Very romantic.”
“You weren’t complaining then,” Wednesday points out.
The blonde smiles a bit as she remembers Wednesday asking her to dance that night to kill the time. “No. No I wasn’t.”
With something painfully close to a smile on her lips, Wednesday holds out her hand again, which Enid quickly takes. They trudge out of the shack and back through the woods. It’s still raining, but neither seem to notice it that much this time.
Back at the dorm, Wednesday hands Enid a towel and a black sweatpant/t-shirt combo that the wolf practically owned at this point.
30 minutes later, Enid is curled up on Wednesday’s bed, writing a paper on her laptop. The seer is pouring over her case notes at her desk.
“The photos of the murder weapon suggest the killer was left handed. The police have the wrong person in custody.”
“Yeah?” Enid asks, climbing from the bed and going to stand by her girlfriend’s side. She had quickly grown accustomed to the gruesome murder board that was a permanent fixture in the room.
The wolf points at one of the photos. “And there’s blood on the side of the glass shard there. The killer probably cut their own hand in the process too. Maybe still has scars.”
Wednesday looks up at her girlfriend in pleased surprise. “My morbidity is rubbing off on you.”
“Ha. And my proclivity for modern music is rubbing off on you.” Enid grins and strokes the seer’s cheek with her thumb. “Don’t think I haven’t noticed you playing Chappell Roan on the cello.”
Wednesday flushes. “Only because you blast it incessantly.”
“Uh huh. Sure babe. I know you secretly like Picture You. Don’t worry. I do too.” Enid winks.
Wednesday’s eyes narrow, but she doesn’t deny it.
The wolf laughs in triumph and kisses the seer quickly before flopping back on the bed. Immediately scrolling on her phone.
Wednesday stands there and watches her for a long moment.
“Enid.”
“Yeah?”
Tell her.
“I…” Wednesday fidgets with her hands. Enid drops her phone at the stuttering and gives her full attention to her girlfriend. Recognizing the seriousness of the moment. “I am grateful that you accompanied me today.”
Not quite what she wanted to say. But not a bad start.
Enid smiles softly. “I’ll always go where you ask, Wednesday.”
The seer sucks in a breath. That was a dangerous promise.
“I know.” Enid nods, reading Wednesday’s mind. “But I mean it.”
“Always?” Wednesday asks in slight disbelief.
“Always.” Enid holds up her pinky as a symbol of the promise. “As long as you keep asking me.”
Wednesday stares at the pinky for a moment. Then surprises them both by reaching out with her own and interlocking them.
Enid’s eyes widen in shock as she looks up at her girlfriend. Wednesday doesn’t say anything. But the message was loud and clear.
Wednesday would always ask.
February 12th: Hug Day
Enid was exhausted. But in a good way. She knows she had left it all out there on the stage with her fellow ballet performers. Now it was just up to the judges.
She glances around the auditorium from her view on the stage. She wishes for some familiar faces. Well, specifically one familiar face. But the competition had been in New York, and Wednesday had a fencing tournament of her own back in Boston.
“Northeastern!”
The cheers of her teammates jerk her back to reality. She’s crushed in hugs and screams of joy. Enid can’t remember the last time she won anything. Take that Esther.
After celebrations and congratulation speeches from the coaches, the team finally packs up and trudges out to the bus that would take them back to school.
There’s a pack of people by the bus. Family members. Boyfriends. Friends. Everyone seemed to have someone there. Enid just sighs and goes to the back of the bus to unload her bag, trying to ignore the squeals of excitement from her teammates.
“Now I know where your incessant exuberance comes from.”
Enid jumps and drops her bag. She knows that voice. But she can’t believe it. She whips around.
“Wednesday???”
“Enid.”
The seer is standing there in her signature black from head to toe, with perfect posture, and a sly smirk on her lips.
“Oh my god!” Enid automatically raises her arms to hug the girl, but stops at the last second, remembering that her girlfriend wasn’t exactly the biggest hugger. Especially in public.
Wednesday just raises an eyebrow. Then holds out her arms.
Enid only pauses for a second before she throws herself into them. She grips the raven tightly, relishing in the fact that Wednesday hugs her back just as fiercely.
Winning was great. But this was everything.
“W-What are you doing here?” Enid gasps in her girlfriend’s ear. She’s not really sure when she started crying, but here she was.
“What does it look like?” Wednesday says gruffly in response.
Enid shakes her head and pulls back slightly to look the seer in the eye. “Were you here the whole time?”
Wednesday gives the smallest of nods.
“Oh my god, Wends!” Enid exclaims, cupping the girl’s cheeks. “But your tournament…”
The raven shrugs. “There will be other times to beat Barclay.”
“Wednesday…I-I can’t thank you enough-”
“Then don’t.” The seer reaches up and wipes a tear from Enid’s cheek. “Besides, you were…mesmerizing to watch.”
More tears stream down the blonde’s face. She rests her forehead to the raven’s. “Wednesday, I lo-”
“Enid!” Her coach’s voice rings over the crowd.
The wolf jumps back in startlement and looks over.
“You coming on the bus?’
“Oh, uh.” Enid glances at her girlfriend. Wednesday glances at the black hearse to the side that Lurch was standing next to. “No, I’ll meet you guys back at school!”
The coach only nods and turns to the next girl to ask the same question.
Enid grabs her bag while Wednesday turns robotically and walks back to the car. The wolf follows, giving Lurch a friendly fistbump as she climbs in after her girlfriend. She holds Wednesday’s hand all the way back to school.
February 13th: Kiss Day
“This is an insult to Shakespeare.”
Enid nudges the girl next to her. “Oh come on, Wends. 10 Things I Hate About You is a classic!”
“You sorely misunderstand the definition of ‘classic’.”
“We’re only ten minutes in. Give it a chance?” Enid looks up with those big blue eyes that she knows Wednesday can’t say no to.
The seer huffs, but settles into her spot on her bed, accepting her fate for the evening. Enid throws her arm around the smaller girl with a grin and rests her head on her shoulder. The seer supposes her fate wasn’t so bad if it ended up like this.
“They could’ve at least used the same names,” Wednesday grumbles, not five minutes later.
Enid rolls her eyes. “No one is calling Heath Ledger, Petruchio.”
Wednesday raises an eyebrow. “So you have read the play?”
“Yes.”
“Then you realize how inaccurate-”
Wednesday’s words are abruptly cut off by Enid’s lips. The wolf kisses her deeply, running her tongue over dark painted lips in a way that causes Wednesday’s breath to hitch. When Enid pulls back, Wednesday instinctively chases, but a warm finger is pressed to her lips, preventing her from moving any further.
Enid’s eyes glisten with mirth as her girlfriend frowns in an adorable pout. She’d never get over the feeling of being the only one in the world that could make Wednesday Addams lose control like this.
She leans forward ever so slightly. Watching Wednesday’s eyes watch her own lips. Her tone is low when she speaks. “I mean this in the nicest way possible, babe. Shut up and watch the movie.”
The seer gets it half right. She doesn’t say another word, but doesn’t watch the movie either. Just continues to stare at the blonde that was inches away.
Enid smirks and uses a finger to gently tilt Wednesday’s chin so her eyes once again face the laptop screen. Then she places a quick kiss on the seer’s jaw before resting her head back down on her shoulder and turning back to the movie herself.
Wednesday gazes blankly at the laptop screen. No longer comprehending anything going on. Still confused about what just happened and how Enid had caused her cognitive abilities to simply vanish into thin air.
It takes another solid five minutes for Wednesday to catch back up with the movie. It’s still littered with inaccuracies, but she supposes she can see how some would find it mildly entertaining. Besides, she doesn’t dare interrupt again, for fear that Enid would steal her ability for cohesive thought permanently if she did. So instead she just resigns herself to watching and absently strokes her fingers through dyed blonde hair.
Ninety minutes later, Enid is grinning up at her girlfriend. “See? That wasn’t so bad.”
“The poem at the end was atrocious.”
“That’s the heart of the movie!” Enid says in offense. “Where she finally says everything she wants to say!”
“In the most nauseating way possible.”
“But it was the perfect way to get her point across! She calls him out while also admitting her feelings.”
“A convoluted sentiment to be sure.”
“Ugh you don’t understand.” Enid groans. “It was basically her saying she’d accept an apology if he’d give it and then he goes after her and-”
Now Enid is the one cut off by earnest lips. Wednesday tugging her in by the collar of her sweatshirt and mapping her canines with her tongue. Just when Enid gets over her initial shock at the kiss and is about to return it, Wednesday pulls back with a smug smirk on her face.
Enid’s head is spinning as she stares at Wednesday’s lips. The tables completely flipped from before. Suddenly she understands.
“You were trying to rile me up on purpose, weren’t you?” The wolf says breathlessly, shifting so that she’s basically straddling Wednesday now.
Wednesday looks completely unaffected on the surface. Though Enid can hear the seer’s heart rate racing almost as fast as her own.
“I don’t know what you mean.” The smirk hasn’t left Wednesday's lips. And one hand still grips the wolf’s collar while the one runs hesitantly along the hem of the sweatshirt.
Enid is completely gone as she stares down into brown eyes, arms around the seer’s neck. Her words come out as a choked whisper. “I hate you.”
The amusement only grows in Wednesday’s eyes. “Is that so?”
“Yes.” Enid growls before fusing their lips back together again. Hands grasping the smaller girl’s cheeks desperately. Whimpering when the seer returns the kiss with just as much passion and bite behind it.
Wednesday understands the poem now.
“Wends, I…” Enid pulls back ever so slightly to catch her breath and try to steady her shaking hands. Wednesday’s grip is tight on her waist now, which does nothing to help the spinning of her head. “I lov-”
“Enid.”
“...Yeah?”
“Stop talking.”
For once, Enid does.
February 14th
Enid wakes up in Wednesday’s bed alone.
She supposes she shouldn’t be that surprised. The seer always got up at an ungodly hour. But she can’t help but feel a bit disappointed. Somewhere deep down she hoped that maybe there was a small chance Wednesday did know about Valentine's Day and was going to surprise her. That didn’t seem like the case though.
She gets up and grabs her things and crosses the hallway to enter her own room.
Yoko looks up from her bed with a snicker. “Have a good night, wolfie?”
Enid flushes and rubs the back of her neck. “Nothing happened.”
“Uh huh. The marks on your neck say otherwise.”
Enid’s eyes widen as she looks at herself in the mirror. “Jesus…I bet she looks worse though.”
Yoko raises an eyebrow. “I don’t know. I saw her in the hall this morning and didn’t see any marks.”
Of course not, Enid thinks. Leave it to an Addams to know how to perfectly conceal werewolf bite marks. “Did she say where she was going?”
“It’s funny that you think she would tell me anything,” the vampire mutters.
“Right…” Sometimes Enid forgot that she was Wednesday’s exception to just about everything. Conversation included.
“You guys really aren’t doing anything for Valentine’s Day?” Yoko asks.
Enid shrugs. “She hasn’t said anything so I assume not. I still got her a gift though. I’m just gonna say it’s some random occasion.”
“You really love her.”
Enid tilts her head as if the question itself was ridiculous. “Yeah.”
Yoko nods. “Well. Divina will be here in an hour. We’re going to Cece’s.”
“Woah, how did Divina manage that?”
“Pretty sure she siren songed the manager, but I’m not complaining.”
Enid smiles. “Why is it so hot when they commit felonies in our name?”
Yoko smirks. “It’s an unexplainable phenomenon.”
About an hour later, Yoko exits with Divina. Enid uses the time to check Wednesday’s room, but the seer still isn’t there. She wishes for the millionth time that her girlfriend had a phone. If it was anyone else, she’d be worried at this point, but she knows Wednesday can handle herself. She just wishes she’d get more updates sometimes.
Time ticks by without any indication the raven has returned. So Enid busies herself with homework and pop music.
A knock on the door eventually startles her out of her studying session. She glances at her watch, surprised that it was already after 4pm.
She opens the door.
“Get dressed. We’re going out.” Wednesday says stoically.
“Um, hello to you too?” Enid tilts her head. “Where have you been all day?”
“Out.”
Apparently Enid wasn’t always the exception when it came to Wednesday’s distaste for conversation.
“Okay…” Enid mutters. If the seer didn’t want to tell her then she probably didn’t want to know. “Then where are we going?”
“Out.”
“Wednesday.”
“Enid.”
The blonde sighs. “At least tell me what to wear for the occasion? Do I need my rainboots? Are we traipsing through the woods again?”
Wednesday hesitates for a second which makes Enid slightly suspicious, but the seer answers before she can ask about it. “You may wear something nice if you wish. We are not traipsing through the woods.”
Enid nods. “I’ll be ready in ten minutes.”
“We both know it will be twenty.”
“Hey!” Enid huffs, though a smile appears on her lips. “Get out of here!”
Wednesday’s eyes flash with amusement as well, but she dutifully turns and enters her own room.
20 minutes later, Wednesday knocks on Enid’s door again.
Enid flings it open. Her eyes go wide. “Woah. Wednesday…y-you look…”
Her eyes rake over her girlfriend who wears dark slacks with a black button-up shirt and black tie. The sleeves are rolled up slightly, revealing the most expensive watch Enid had ever seen on the seer’s wrist. The simple moon and raven pendant Enid had given her for Christmas hangs around her neck.
Wednesday quirks an eyebrow.
“Hot.” Enid finally finishes her sentence. “Really hot.”
“Hmm,” Wednesday mutters, glancing over Enid in the same manner. The wolf wore a bright pink skirt with a white blouse that showed just a bit of stomach. The moonbeam enchanted bracelet Wednesday had given her shining on her wrist. “And you look…”
Now Enid quirks an eyebrow.
“Magnificent as well.”
Enid flushes and grabs her bag, subtly making sure the gift she bought was still tucked away inside. “So where are we going?”
The seer of course doesn’t respond, and simply keeps walking. All Enid can do is follow.
They walk for some time throughout the campus, until eventually they come to a building that Enid knows all too well. Yet she’s still surprised when Wednesday goes up to it.
“What are we doing at the dance studio?”
The seer still doesn’t respond, but casually picks the lock to the building and holds open the door.
“You are so going to get me expelled one day,” Enid mutters. But she walks in anyway.
The building is empty of course, it being the weekend and Valentine’s Day no less. But it’s still bright and cheery inside, with the last golden rays of sunlight streaming through the numerous windows.
“Are you bringing me here to murder me? Because this doesn’t seem the most efficient way to do so,” Enid teases, though she’s completely confused as to what’s going on at this point.
Wednesday just looks at her with a hint of amusement before continuing up some stairs. Climbing up and up until they reach the level where Enid’s favorite part of the studio lies. A practice room overlooking the expansive athletic fields below.
When they get to the door, Wednesday hesitates for the first time all evening. She glances at Enid. “Close your eyes.”
“Uh, Wends?” Enid asks, the nervousness in Wednesday’s voice making her nervous too.
“Trust me.”
Enid closes her eyes.
She hears the door open. Feels a hand in her own, guiding her forward.
“Okay. Open them.”
She does.
“Oh my god…” Enid’s hands fly to her mouth in shock.
On the floor of the studio is a black picnic blanket. Laid out with a variety of Enid’s favorite foods. Including the chocolates she had (mysteriously) gotten from the lunch lady. A simple vase of white roses sits in the middle. With pink lounge pillows on the side that Enid is sure Thing picked out.
Enid steps closer and takes everything in before looking back at Wednesday, eyes shining with tears. “You did all this for me?”
The seer shrugs in embarrassment, eyes looking everywhere but at the wolf.
Enid all but tackles her in a hug. One that Wednesday gladly returns. The wolf buries her face in her girlfriend’s neck. Inhaling the scent of fresh spring rain and the promise of something that felt scarily close to forever. How did she ever get so lucky?
“W-Why?” Enid stutters when she finally pulls back. She assumes it’s for Valentine’s Day, but the seer still hadn’t said anything about it. Maybe it was just a crazy coincidence.
Wednesday tilts her head and motions for Enid to sit down next to her on the blanket. She digs around in her bag and pulls something out. “Perhaps this will answer your question.”
She hands Enid a small black teddy bear. The same kind as the pink one that had shown up on Enid’s pillow only days before. Except this one is holding a sign. A sign that makes Enid's eyes well up with tears when she reads it.
Will you be my valentine?
“Oh my gosh, Wends. Yes!” Enid pulls the seer into a tight embrace again.
“I didn’t even ask,” Wednesday mutters with pink cheeks. Feeling incredibly embarrassed, but also incredibly happy.
“Even so. The answer is yes. It’s always a yes, Wednesday.” Enid says sincerely, pulling back only enough to press a deep kiss to the seer’s lips.
When she pulls away, she glances around again. Now recognizing the white roses and the chocolates. Her jaw drops even further. “Have you been giving me gifts this whole week??”
“It was Thing’s idea,” Wednesday grumbles.
“Oh my gosh,” Enid shakes her head in disbelief. Now that she thinks about it, of course it had been Wednesday. Colleges don’t just give out expensive chocolates for free. And ravens don’t just randomly give people white roses.
“Wends…I didn’t think you’d like Valentine’s Day,” Enid finally admits, looking over at her girlfriend with pure adoration. “So I didn’t want to bring it up.”
“I know.”
“You know?”
Wednesday shrugs, still not wanting to give away what she’d overheard the other day. “The capitalist agenda of Valentine’s Day is truly horrifying.”
Enid laughs softly. “I knew you’d hate that part.”
“Indeed.”
The wolf grasps the raven’s hand. “Thank you, Wednesday. For everything.”
“That’s an unwarranted sentiment.”
“It’s not.”
Wednesday shifts uncomfortably under the wolf’s affectionate gaze. “Come, let’s eat. I know you’re hungry.”
“That just means you’re hungry too,” Enid says knowingly, but grabs a plate and digs in all the same.
They eat and talk as the sun sets over the field. Eventually they settle side by side, leaning against the wall and gazing out through the window where the stars are now coming out.
“Oh!” Enid exclaims, digging through her bag. “I got you something too, here!”
Wednesday frowns slightly as she takes the small bag. “A gift was unnecessary.”
“A bit crazy of you to say considering you did all this,” Enid gestures. “Just open it.”
Wednesday tilts her head and opens the black bag, pulling out the black tissue paper. Eventually she grasps something firm, and carefully unwraps it.
All she can do is stare at the object.
“Do you like it?” Enid asks nervously. “It’s a first edition copy. And your mom said you didn’t have it.”
“E-Enid this is…” For once, Wednesday Addams is stuttering over her words. She runs her hands reverently over the pristine book cover of The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe. She looks over at her girlfriend with genuine shock in her eyes.
Enid smiles shyly. “You-”
Wednesday cuts her off with a kiss. Hand firm on the wolf’s jaw.
“I-I take it you like it,” Enid stutters when she pulls away.
The seer only nods.
“Happy Valentine’s Day, Wends.”
Wednesday doesn’t respond, but puts the book down gently. Then she pulls out a gift box of her own, wrapped with a pink bow. She holds it out.
“What? You already got me all this other stuff!” Enid protests.
Wednesday just continues to hold out the box.
Enid grabs it with a sigh and pulls off the ribbon to open the box. At first she looks at the object in her hands in confusion. It’s just a simple black flip phone. Then her eyes go wide as she suddenly starts to understand. “Wait, is this…?”
“It only has one number in it,” Wednesday explains, picking the phone out of the box. “Yours.”
Enid’s eyes shine with awe as Wednesday flips open the phone and shows her the singular contact inside. “I can’t believe you got a phone for me.”
“It seemed…prudent,” Wednesday says nonchalantly. As if she hadn’t also been wishing recently that she could have a more consistent way to stay in touch with her girlfriend. “But if you give my number to anyone else I will bury you under the ashes of the greenhouse.”
Enid only grins widely. “I’d expect nothing less.”
She kisses Wednesday then. Practically climbing in her lap to meld their lips together in heated devotion. Wednesday just guides her closer. Cool fingertips hesitantly skimming the exposed skin where Enid’s shirt rode up.
The wolf’s lips trailer further as she loosens Wednesday’s tie. Kissing and nipping a path down the seer’s jaw. Hoping to make more permanent marks than from the previous night. Ones that even an Addams couldn’t cover up.
“E-Enid.” Wednesday stutters when canines sink into her pulse point. Not sounding at all like she was objecting to Enid’s goal.
The wolf sighs happily and pulls back ever so slightly to touch their forehead’s together. Blue eyes meet brown.
“I love you.”
Wednesday’s only response is to pull Enid back in for another searing kiss.
February 15th
Wednesday lies in her bed. Staring at the clock on the wall.
It’s 2:34 in the morning.
Her fingers lightly trace the shoulders of the girl practically lying on top of her.
“Enid.”
“Mmm?” The werewolf mutters sleepily. When she doesn’t hear a response, Enid blinks her eyes open and looks up questioningly. “What?”
Wednesday summons every ounce of courage contained in her small body and looks back into blue eyes.
“I love you too.”
