Work Text:

There’s always those special moments for hearts to bond and share moments. The holidays are no exception. Especially on Valentine’s Day. It’s only been two months ever since Sora had proposed to Kairi on Christmas day. For their first date for being engaged, the two want to make Valentine’s Day a special one to show how excited they are. The question is how?

Sora had gone out on another mission, and Kairi had gotten back to the new apartment that she and Sora are living in. She looks out the window and out towards the southern horizon as the sun sets. Kairi reaches into her pocket to pull out her gummiphone and open the messages app.

“I should be done very soon, and I’ll be home for Valentine’s Day tomorrow. I can’t wait. Love you, Kairi,” Sora had texted.

“I’m excited, too. See you tomorrow, my love. Love you, too, Sora,” Kairi texted back. She puts her phone away and stares out into the horizon again. Her smile disappears and her eyes look down towards the town. “Oh. . . What to do? This is our first Valentine’s Day as an engaged couple. I really want this one to be special.” Kairi starts pacing around the living room with her left hand by her chin. “Hm. What should I prepare? A picnic on the island? No. That would just feel like a normal date. Get some chocolates? Too simple. Ugh!” Kairi pulls out her phone again and goes to her contacts. “Maybe Riku might know of something. No. He’s with Sora on the same mission. I don’t wanna spoil anything. Maybe Aqua. Oh right, she’s also on another mission. What about Namine?” She taps on the call button on Namine’s profile. The phone starts ringing and Kairi keeps pacing around the room before sitting on the couch.

“Hey, Kairi,” Namine answered.

“Hey, Namine. How have you been?” Kairi asked.

“I’m doing alright. What about you?” Namine replied.

“Not so much. Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day, and I want my date with Sora to be very special since we are gonna get married, but I can’t think of anything to make it special,” Kairi explained.

“Kairi, I get it. You want it to be special. I’m doing something special with Riku when he gets back,” Namine started.

“What are you two doing?” Kairi wondered.

“I am going to take him out to dinner and have some chocolates. I even drew him a card to give him,” Namine answered.

“That’s sweet. I hope he likes it,” Kairi hopes.

“I know he will. Kairi, I think you’re overthinking it a bit. Maybe Riku and I are doing a date night for dinner and chocolates, but what matters is that we’re together. And I’m sure Sora will like anything you give him. I wonder if he even has something for you,” Namine replied. “What do you think you wanna do? Take him out to the island for a dinner picnic and some chocolates? Or go with him to another world? I hear there’s gonna be a lantern show in the Kingdom of Corona tomorrow.”

“That sounds amazing. Thanks, Namine. I’ll think it through. Enjoy your date with Riku,” Kairi thanked.

“Thanks, Kairi. I’m glad I could help. Just remember, what matters is that you’re together. And I know Sora will love whatever you have planned,” Namine reminded. “Have fun.”

“I will. Thanks again, Namine,” Kairi thanked. “See ya.”

“See you,” Namine responded before hanging up. Kairi puts her phone away in her pocket and sat up on the couch. She looks to the kitchen and smiles.

“I know what we’re gonna do tomorrow,” she stated to herself.

It was the afternoon of Valentine’s Day, and Kairi had pulled her boat over to the Destiny Island with a blanket, a basket, and a heart-shaped box. She grabs her phone and texts Sora, “Come to the island. I’m waiting.” She grabs all of her things and climbs out of the boat. As she sets them down on the sands, she looks to the paopu fruit tree. She smiles and closes her eyes and remembers sharing a paopu fruit with the boy she loves.

“He’ll love it. I know he will,” Kairi thought to herself as she lays the blanket on the sands and flatens it out. “But what if it feels too simple and not so special for today? Come on, Kairi. Get a hold of yourself. Remember what Namine said. What matters is that we’ll be together and this will be a moment we’ll both cherish.” She places the basket and package on the blanket and sets herself down on her left side. All that’s left is to wait.

Time passes and the sun is approaching the western horizon. Kairi continues to stare out at sea while waiting for Sora. She groans while lowering her head. Her eyes barely open and her mouth shut and down.

“Maybe he just got delayed. His mission must be going on longer than he had hoped,” she thought. “Oh. . .I just hope he’s not pushed back for another day.” She looks out to the horizon again. She looks up to see a bright light appear and disappear. A beam of light comes from that same place and heads towards the island. “Huh?” The light beam crashes onto the beach and sand blasts everywhere. Kairi raises her arms up as the sand is flown at her and the picnic set. She stands up and hears someone panting and sees their silhouette in the dust on their knee. “Sora!” She stands up and runs to him.

“Kairi! I. . .I. . .” Sora started before he sneezed sand off of his face. Kairi leans back from that to avoid the sand. “Sorry about that. And I’m so sorry that I’m late. This Heartless Riku and I stumbled across wouldn’t stop moving. I didn’t mean to miss so much of our day together. . .”

“Hey, hey, hey, it’s okay. You’re here now, aren’t you?” Kairi asked.

“Well, yeah, but I was really hoping I’d be back this morning so we can spend the whole day together. I know how much this day was meant for us as an engaged couple,” Sora complained while stuttering.

“Shh. Hey, you’re here now. It wasn’t your fault. You just got held up,” Kairi comforted her fiancee. “And you wanna know something? Remember how you always fought your hardest to return to me? How you fought so hard to bring me back? Well, this is just like those times. You fought so hard to come back here to me. Just as you promised.” Sora starts forming a smile on his face while shedding tears from his eyes. “I uh. . . I prepared a picnic for you on the island.” Sora looks to the basket and heart-shaped box on the picnic blanket. He continues to smile and look at his fiance. He places his right hand on Kairi’s left cheek and pulls her in for a kiss. Kairi places her right hand on Sora’s left cheek and embrace their kiss.

The sun slowly sets over the horizon as the two share their dinner and the chocolates that were in the heart-shaped box. They both shared a freshly cooked meatloaf with paopu fruits to go with it. The chocolates were shaped like the paopu fruits and as well as hearts. Milk chocolate flavored as well. Kairi leans on Sora’s chest while he has his right arm wrapped around her waist.

“Wow. That was amazing. You’re a really good cook,” Sora complimented.

“I had plenty of time to practice during my training,” Kairi replied. “To be honest, I really thought about making this day special. I thought this was too simple.”

“Kairi, anything with you, is always special. You always give me some of the greatest gifts. And you gave me the greatest gift in the world. You,” Sora stated. Kairi looks up at Sora’s face and smiles. “You just being here with me is the only gift I need.”

“And you being here with me is all I need,” Kairi replied and kissed Sora’s right cheek. She snuggles into his arms and the two stare off into the sunset.

“I’ve got something else in mind. Wanna go for a flight?” Sora requested. Kairi smiles and the two stand up. Sora extends his right arm out and a bright yellow wing appears from his back. He pushes off the ground. Kairi chuckles and extends her left arm out and summons her wing before pushing off the ground.

The two smile and laugh while following each other in the skies above the Destiny Islands. Sora folds in his wing and spins in a circle. Kairi follows suit. Kairi grabs Sora’s hand and fly around the buildings on the mainland. They circle around their apartment and soar towards the clouds. They close their eyes as they soar through them. Kairi summons her Keyblade and shines a light up ahead. Sora watches as it forms a gateway. Kairi guides Sora through the light and emerge into a sea of floating lanterns. The two look in awe of the lights floating in the night sky above the Kingdom of Corona. They both see them shine with the castle behind them on the ground. Kairi reaches her right arm over Sora’s waist and he does the same around Kairi’s with his left arm. They spin around the lanterns and glide towards the water. Just a few feat above the water, the two drag their free arms down in it while passing through the several lanterns. They pull up and continue their flight. Sora turns his head to Kairi as she does the same. They both stare into their blue eyes and form smiles on their faces as they pucker their lips together while flying through the lanterns.

After flying through the sea of floating lanterns, the two land on the shore and sit under the trees wrapped in each other’s arms and stare off at all of the lanterns as they continue to ascend into the night sky.

“This is the best Valentine’s Day ever,” Kairi stated.

“I agree. It’s the best of my life,” Sora stated.

“Yeah,” Kairi said, leaning her head against Sora’s right shoulder. “You too give me the greatest gifts. And I see that we really don’t need anything fancy for a perfect Valentine’s Day date. Especially since we’re getting married. We just need each other.” Kairi closes her eyes. “I love you so much. Happy Valentine’s Day, my prince.”

“Happy Valentine’s Day, my princess. I love you, too,” Sora replied, closing his eyes and resting his head on Kairi’s. They hold each other tight as they rest their heads on each other and watch the lantern show as their first Valentine’s Day as an engaged couple comes to a close.

Notes:

Just in time for Valentine's Day. I feel like I've done too many though. First there was my two Data Greeting music videos, then there was a bigger project on my YouTube channel, and now this. Ah, who am I kidding. I see nothing wrong with doing so many specials around a holiday. The romantic flight was inspired by two other romantic flights. The fly around the Axiom from WALL-E and the romantic flight in the clouds above Berk in How to Train Your Dragon. I really like the idea of how they were played out, and I couldn't stop thinking about something like that for Valentine's Day. Especially since Sora and Kairi have their wings that they used in the ReMind final boss. I hope you enjoyed this. Have a Happy Valentine's Day!
