What is something that Sora and Kairi look forward to when they’re together? Their future. It has been three months since their Christmas adventure, and ever since Sora proposed to Kairi. And it is only a ten days away from the birthday of Sora, and he and Kairi were relaxing in their apartment thinking about how excited they are to get married, what they’re looking forward to, but also about their duties as Keyblade Wielders since two Lost Masters with the essence of True Darkness within their hearts still remain at large.
“Heya,” said Kairi, walking into the living room. “You ready for dinner?”
“Yep. I was just waiting for you,” Sora replied, getting up from the couch. The two are dressed for the evening. The two hold hands as they walk out the door and to dinner.
The two head for the Destiny Islands restaurant down by the shore looking out to the small island where they all used to play when they were kids. The two have a table on the patio and looking out to the sea while enjoying a nice meal.
“They really make some of the finest meals on the island, don’t they?” Kairi asked.
“Yeah. I wonder if they ever get the chance, they could try Little Chef’s food in Twilight Town. He too makes some of the finest meals,” said Sora.
“Just don’t mention this to Scrooge McDuck,” said Kairi.
“Oh yeah. I don’t want anyone having to end up being competitors to Scrooge even if they’re worlds apart. I know I wouldn’t want to be,” Sora replied. Kairi chuckles at that.
“So, it’s been three months since Christmas. Any thoughts about our wedding?” Kairi wondered.
“Well, after everything we’ve been through, I kinda want it to be special for us,” Sora answered.
“Yeah. I do, too. Valentine’s Day was last month, and we had a great time together. What if we had our wedding on that holiday next year?” Kairi suggested.
“Yeah. Sure. And I’ve been thinking maybe we could have it in Radiant Garden,” Sora added.
“I think that would be lovely,” Kairi replied. She turns and looks out to sea. “Sora, do you think things will still feel the same? I’m honored to be a Keyblade Wielder just like you and Riku. And during Christmas, I was thinking if we might hang up our Keyblades for this life. But with Luxu and his master still out there trying to end the war between light and darkness, I don’t think our jobs will ever be done.”
“Yeah. Honestly, I wanna settle down, too. Hang up the Keyblades for a while. Spend some time with you, but we may have to keep fighting after all,” Sora replied. “What is something you wanna do together?”
“Well, I’ve been thinking. . .what if we not only take it easy, but what if we were to. . .start a family?” Kairi thought.
“Really? I mean. . .I’d be honored, but with us getting married. . .” Sora started.
“Someday, baby. I’d be honored, too, but we’re nowhere near ready for that,” Kairi replied.
“Yeah. That’s true. We don’t want to risk anything with us or our own children,” Sora said.
“Yeah. With the final two Lost Masters corrupted by darkness, they’ll use our children to get to us. Probably the rest of our friends as well,” said Kairi. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have brought that up.”
“Hey. It’s okay. I know. It’s a big step for us, and we don’t wanna make things harder than they already are for us. Maybe someday. We don’t wanna put so much on us while we’re in this. We’re already keeping this a secret, but let’s not have to worry about doing anymore. But whatever happens, we’ll get through this together. Okay?” Sora said.
“Yeah. Together,” Kairi replied while grabbing Sora’s hand. The two lean in for a kiss. The two stop after hearing some wind picking up. “Huh? What’s going on?” The two look at the building to see people running away from something they saw through the windows and patio. “Uh, Sora.” Sora turns around to see dark clouds over the small island. Thunder is being heard, and lightning is striking around the island.
“Again?” Sora asked. “Look. Darkness.” Sora points to dark clouds of aura emitting around the island.
“Heartless, maybe?” Kairi wondered.
“Let’s go find out,” Sora replied. The two pull out their Keyblades and rush to the island.
Gliding across the water, Sora and Kairi land on the shores and come face-to-face with Shadow Heartless. The two engage and cut them down with their Keyblades. More Shadows keep spawning on the shore to surround the two. Three jump towards them from behind but are blasted by dark fire magic.
“Riku!” Sora and Kairi called out. Riku runs to them with his Braveheart Keyblade in hand.
“You two okay?” he asked.
“We’re alright. Though we wish they had picked a better time instead of interrupting our date,” Sora replied.
“Yeah. I was with Namine out on the beach overlooking the island and not far from you,” Riku replied while cutting down another Heartless.
“Is she doing alright?” Kairi asked.
“Yeah. She’s helping the people on the main island,” Riku replied. “Do you have any idea what’s going on?” Just as he asked, a giant black claw reaches over the wooden wall that leads to the cove. A giant monster Heartless with thorns sticking out of its back and large yellow eyes.
“If I had to guess, it would be that Heartless that’s causing all of this,” Sora replied.
“Yeah. That would explain it all,” Riku replied. “We’re no match for it. We need back up.”
“Is there any way we can drive it out of this world and then chase it down?” Sora asked.
“Maybe it we blast it with light, it can scare it off and weaken it,” said Riku. “Sora, you take the middle. Kairi, you go right. I’ll go left.” The three split up to their positions. They point their Keyblades up and shine light from them. The giant Heartless leans back but throws dark balls towards them.
“We might need more power if we’re to push it out!” said Sora.
The three keep using their powers to push back the Heartless and out of their world. The Heartless lets out a roar and strikes lightning on the island. Sora and Riku duck down and move away from the strikes. Kairi moves away from a strike and runs to the boys. A lightning bolt comes straight through the bridge and Kairi stares into the light before being knocked back by the blast.
“Kairi!” Sora shouted. He runs over to her while avoiding the lightning strikes. Riku runs to back him up. “She’s unconscious. We gotta get out of here.” The giant Heartless reaches its arm up and prepares to slam down at them.
A blast of light comes out from the sky and strikes the hand of the Heartless. The Destiny Trio looks up and sees the Wayfinder Trio on their gliders, and the Sea-Salt Trio in their own gummiship while blasting at the Heartless. The Heartless looks up and lowers itself to disappear into the darkness. A dark wormhole appears below it and it sinks through it. The dark clouds fade away to reveal the stars in the night sky. Everyone else lands on the ground and runs to the Destiny Trio.
All of the guardians head to the Land of Departure to help Kairi and figure out what that mysterious Heartless was that attacked the island. Sora, Riku, and Namine look after her in the guest room. Kairi starts moaning and groaning as she slowly opens her eyes.
“Sora?” she asked.
“Kairi, it’s okay. I’m here. Riku and Namine are here too,” Sora reassured.
“Here, where?” Kairi asked.
“We’re here on your side. To your right,” Sora answered.
“I don’t see you. Everything’s so dark. Everything is pitch black,” Kairi replied while sitting up. “I heard you to my right, but I can’t see you guys.”
“The lightning strike and explosion. You were so close to it. That means it. . .” Riku started.
“It blinded her,” Namine finished.
“That really hurt. And my eyes are still sore from that light,” Kairi added. “I can’t even see my hands. Meaning I can’t see my ring or Keyblade either.”
“Where did it even come from?” Sora wondered about the giant Heartless.
“Namine and I will go speak with the others about the Heartless. Meanwhile, you look after Kairi,” said Riku.
“And we’ll contact Aerith about your blindness. Maybe she’ll have herbs that can help you,” Namine said.
“Alright. Stay safe,” Sora replied. Riku and Namine leave the room. Riku looks back and gives Sora a small smirk before walking away.
“Sora? Babe? You still there?” Kairi asked while looking around.
“Of course. I’m not leaving you. I’m right here,” Sora answered, placing his hand on Kairi’s shoulder.
“Will you lay down with me? Just until I fall asleep?” Kairi asked.
“Sure. I’ve got you. You’re gonna be okay,” Sora replied while laying next to her on the bed, and pulling the blanket over them.
The Sun rises over the Land of Departure and the sun beams shine through the window of the guest bedroom. Sora and Kairi have their arms wrapped around each other. Sora opens his eyes slowly to see his fiancee still sleeping. His hands begin to wander around her body. Kairi smiles as she feels his hands while sleeping. Her hands begin to wonder around Sora’s body as well. Their hands wander close to their chests and hips. Sora loses his smile and pulls his hand away. Kairi then opens her eyes despite not being able to see.
“Sora?” Kairi asked.
“How are you feeling?” Sora asked.
“My eyes are feeling less sore. Still pitch black though,” Kairi answered.
“Don’t worry. I’m gonna look after you until you are cured. I promised that I would,” Sora said.
“And I appreciate it. But remember, that I too have a promise to keep,” Kairi added. “And I intend to keep it as well.” Kairi places her hand on Sora’s chest, over his heart and scar.
Knock. Knock.
Riku, Namine, and Aqua enter the room. Sora and Kairi get up out of the bed.
“Anything?” Kairi asked.
“From what we could tell, the powers are unlike any of the other Heartless we encountered. After leaving the islands, we don’t know where it’s gonna go next,” Riku explained.
“We think maybe Luxu or the Master sent it there. They’ve grown desparate to end this war. The True Darkness in them is having them resort to anything to end it. And destroy anyone who would stand in their way. Maybe they’ll use it go after our allies and then finish the other worlds,” Aqua had thought. “Roxas, Xion, Axel, and Isa are going back to Twilight Town to prepare for any attack from it. We doubt it will go back to the Islands. Terra, Ven, and I are going to keep an eye out from here, while Mickey, Donald, and Goofy defend Disney Castle. Riku, Sora, Namine, join Leon and the others in Radiant Garden.”
“That means I’m just staying here until Aerith has the herbs?” Kairi asked.
“Yeah. She’s at her world now getting those herbs. So stay here. I may have trained you to use your other senses, but it’s too dangerous to handle, even with us backing you up,” said Aqua.
“Kairi, I hate to say this, but Aqua is right,” Sora reluctantly agreed.
“So, I’m back at where I was at the beginning? Unable to help anyone? Always taking a backseat?” Kairi complained.
“Kairi, I don’t like it either, but there is no way we can let you do this in your condition. I am sorry. I agree with your master, and as your fiance, I am putting my foot down,” Sora stated. Kairi frowns her eyes as she turns her head towards Sora. Aqua puts her hand to her head and shakes it while having her eyes closed.
“Remind me never to put my foot down again,” Sora whispered to Riku from the pilot seat of the gummiship. Riku sits in the left passenger seat and Namine is next to him while Kairi is in the right passenger seat.
“I can still hear you, Sora, but I agree,” said Kairi. The gummiship starts shaking a little bit while traveling in the ocean between worlds.
“Ugh! It must’ve taken a hit from the storm. Gonna tell Chip and Dale to look into this,” said Sora. Sora looks over and sees Kairi leaning away from her seat. Riku lunges for the controls as he saw Sora reach over and grabbed Kairi’s waist. “Whoa! Okay, with no seat belts, you gotta hold on tighter.” Riku heads back to his seat as Sora sits back into his seat.
“Oh. Sorry,” Kairi apologized.
“No. Don’t apologize. The truth is, regardless of what condition you’re in, I’m glad you’re here,” Sora replied. Riku smiles at his statement. Kairi stands up and reaches her hands out. Her left hand catches the back of Sora’s seat. Kairi reaches her right hand to Sora. He scootches over to his left and brings his right hand to Kairi’s waist. Kairi sits on the seat next to Sora. She reaches her left arm over and behind Sora’s head, and her right arm around his wasit. Kairi then closes her eyes and leans her head on Sora’s right shoulder. Sora smiles to feel Kairi’s presence. Riku smiles at the two and quickly glances over to Namine who glances at Riku as well.
Twilight Town is looking normal with the light from the twilight Sun shining over all of the town. Roxas, Xion, Axel, and Isa have split up around the town in search of any Heartless activity while the Twilight Town trio - Hayner, Pence, and Olette - try to look for any Heartless using the computer at the Old Mansion. The four meet in the Tram Common outside the Bistro.
“Did you find anything?” Isa asked.
“No. We turned the town upside down, and we found nothing,” Axel replied.
“This doesn’t add up. An attack on the Destiny Islands, but not on Twilight Town, Radiant Garden, or the Land of Departure. Not even a single Shadow or lesser Heartless in town,” Isa wondered.
“Hm. You know I am actually starting to wonder that myself,” Axel said.
“What are the two Lost Masters up to? They know we’re the ones standing in their way to end the war they envision it,” Roxas thought.
“But remember what darkness could lead them to do. Sora has managed to stop them during his time in Quadratum, and we all played a part in it. They’re probably growing impatient to end this war. Revenge is probably driving them to stop us. It would seem that Sora was the first target,” Isa wondered.
“I mean, it would kinda make sense since Sora was the Chosen One to save the worlds from the forces of darkness that would harm them. Not to mention his connections with all of his friends,” said Xion.
“And back in the Organization, Axel, what did we do to get under Sora’s skin?” Isa asked.
“I know where you’re going with, but I’d rather not think about that. But I get what you’re going with,” Axel replied.
“Hey, guys!” Hayner shouted while running to them alongside Pence and Olette. “We picked up a source of darkness traveling in the ocean between worlds.”
“We informed Cid at Radiant Garden to see if he can try to locate it and figure out what world it is going to,” Olette added.
“But it is possible that it could come here,” Pence said.
“Let’s take vantage points around town in case it ever does come here. Keep your gummiphones on in case we ever need to contact anyone,” said Isa.
“Okay. It’s possible it will go to Radiant Garden or the Land of Departure. Just hope Kairi is being careful given her condition,” said Xion.
“We’ve seen her in action. And she’s grown stronger since the 2nd Keyblade War. Besides, she’s got Sora. Nothing can hurt them as long as they’re together,” said Roxas, putting his hand on Xion’s shoulder. Everyone splits up to their advantage points.
The four heroes at Radiant Garden meet up with Leon and Yuffie in the Central Square of the town. Riku and Namine walk ahead with Sora behind them holding Kairi’s hand to guide her.
“Did you see anything on the way here?” Leon asked.
“No. We unfortunately haven’t seen any traces of the Heartless in the Ocean Between,” Riku replied. “Has Cid detected anything, yet?”
“He’s picked up something, but he’s still trying to narrow it down. Really wish he could throw us a bone here and share us what he has found out,” Yuffie said.
“You know he needs a moment before he could tell us, Yuffie,” Riku said.
“Yeah. Yeah. I know,” said Yuffie.
“Kairi, Aerith is almost done gathering the herbs she needs for your eyes,” said Leon. “She just needs a few more things from Midgar, and she’ll be on her way back.”
“Okay. Tell her that I’ll be at Merlin’s House when she gets here,” Kairi replied. “Sora, can you help me there?”
“Of course,” Sora replied. “Although, we still have a moment. Riku, Namine, how about you go with Leon and Yuffie to see if CId has found anything. And call the others if they have anything. We’re gonna be here for a while.”
“Okay. Come on, Riku. Let’s go,” said Namine, while grabbing Riku’s hand and walking with Leon and Yuffie.
“Don’t stay here for too long. We’ll never know when the Heartless will show up,” Riku said back to the two. Sora takes Kairi’s hand and guides her to the flowers to their left.
“Hold on. Let me try something,” said Kairi. She let’s go of Sora’s hand and takes slow steps to the flowers. Her right foot feels the raised brick on the ground and squats down. She reaches her left hand out and feels the pedals of the flowers in the patch.
“Wow. Look at you. Relying on your senses. Hearing. Smelling. Touching. Aqua really taught you well,” Sora complimented.
“Thanks. As you know, I still have more training to do before I achieve the rank of Master. What if we took the exam together? And all three of us will be masters,” Kairi thought.
“Yeah. I’ve been thinking about wanting to retake my exam for a while. Just haven’t found the time to take it since we’ve all been busy,” said Sora.
“True,” Kairi replied, while looking down. “Sora, when I said I felt like I was back at where I was before. . .”
“Hey, you’ve never been useless. You’ve been a big support for me to keep going. You believed in me when no one else did, or when I didn’t believe in myself. I’ve always felt strong with you. And now, just because you’re blind, doesn’t mean you’re useless or helpless,” Sora said to his love.
“But that’s exactly what I felt back then, and it’s what I feel now,” said Kairi.
“Kairi, you and I have been through everything together. And look at you, you’re relying on more than just your eyes. That goes to show how far you’ve come in your training with the Keyblade. You even managed to save me from the darkness last Christmas. You’ve grown so strong, and I am very proud of you. Always remember where your true strength lies, and believe. Don’t ever stop trying,” said Sora. Kairi looks towards Sora and smiles. Sora looks beyond the pale color in her eyes and sees the beautiful blue eyes of the girl he loves. Kairi leans in towards Sora while closing her eyes. Sora reaches for Kairi’s chin with his left hand and closes his eyes and leans in.
“Wait. Did you hear that?” Kairi asked before their lips made contact.
“What?” Sora asked and looked around. The whole area grows darker. Clouds cover the sky. Lightning strikes down.
“Look out!” Kairi shouted and pushed Sora away from a lightning strike.
“Sora! Kairi! We were just gonna tell you about that!” Riku shouted while running to them with Keyblade in hand.
“But it looks like it has beaten you to it,” said Cid while holding his spear.
“Where’s Namine?” Kairi asked.
“She’s back at Merlin’s House. You should get there, too,” Leon answered and suggested.
“Look out!” Yuffie shouted as a lightning strike comes down. Sora moves Kairi out of the way. Sora helps Kairi up and gets her to cover.
“Sora! Please don’t make me do this,” said Kairi.
“I don’t wanna have you do this either, but we don’t know it’s moves, and it’s too risky with your blindness. Trust me. I’ll come back to you,” said Sora while kissing Kairi on the cheek. Kairi reaches out while Sora ran off.
“Back up is on the way. I told the folks in Twilight Town about it coming here. They probably told the others as well,” said Cid.
“Okay. Let’s just hope they get here in time,” said Sora.
“We’re here!” shouted the voice of Aqua from the air on her glider. Terra and Ven are right behind her. Mickey, Donald, and Goofy join in, along with Roxas, Xion, Axel, and Isa. “This Heartless reminds me of the one that I encountered in the realm of darkness. Only this is much worse.”
“We can do it. Let’s go!” said Leon. They all engage the giant Heartless.
It unleashes it’s claws and lightning strikes on the guardians. It sends out dark balls that draw in everyone before they explode into a dark bubble alongside some balls of fire. It unleashes fire tracks as it runs around on the ground and in the air. It spins in the air before striking the ground. The Heartless changes into a shadow and runs into the dark clouds surrounding the square. It spins in circles while dashing towards everyone.
“Aqua, any suggestions,” Terra asked.
“This is way faster and tougher than the one I fought. Which means we gotta be faster as well,” Aqua replied.
“I’m not sure if we can keep up with this,” said Ven.
“I can’t even keep my eyes on it. It’s too fast,” Yuffie complained. Kairi leaps into the air with Keyblade in hand and lands in the center. “What? What are you doing!?”
“Listen!” Kairi said. She listens to the vibrations on the ground. A loud roar comes from above. “Jump!” Everyone jumps away. Kairi throws her Keyblade at the head of the Heartless. It jumps away. “Once it shows itself, strike fast with any spell you have.”
“Wait. How does she. . .” Yuffie started.
“She’s relying on her other sense. Smell. Sound. Touch,” Sora finished.
“Here it comes!” Kairi dodges and everyone casts, fire, ice, and lightning at the Heartless. It then turns towards Kairi. “I hear you. What’s your next move?” The claws sink into the ground. Kairi jumps from a claw swipe and blocks the next one. Sora jumps in and strikes the back with Riku behind him. The tail swings upwards and down. “Heads up!” Leon jumps away from the tail and slices at it. The Heartless roars and runs off. Kairi leaps over it. “Once it strikes again, unleash your most powerful attack. It can’t keep this up forever.” The creature runs around in circles before charging. Everyone dodges every dash. It leaps into air and strikes down with its tail. “Now!” Everyone charges up with powerful magic. Light magic. Dark Firaga. Ninjitzu Banishment. Superblade. Blizzaga. Aeroaga. Ultima Cannon. Black Hole. Firaga. The blast from every attack finishes it off. The Heartless disappears and the heart is set free. The clouds disappear and the sky reappears. “Everyone okay?”
“Yeah. We’re good,” Riku replied. Sora approaches Kairi.
“Kairi, that was amazing,” he complimented.
“I may be blind, but that doesn’t mean I can’t do anything. I listened to the vibrations of the attacks and the growls it makes before an attack. And I knew you were struggling. I had to help,” said Kairi.
“You never cease to amaze me, my love. Aqua has trained you well,” Sora replied. Aqua smiles.
Some time passes, and Kairi is laying on the bed at Merlin’s House after Aerith gave her the herbs needed for her eyes, and Sora is standing nearby with Riku, Namine, and Aqua. Kairi groans as she sits up. Aerith grabs the bandages and unwraps them.
“Kairi, are you,” Sora started.
“Looking at you?” Kairi finished. “Yes. I am.” Kairi stands up and hugs Sora. “Thanks, Aerith.”
“You’re welcome, Kairi. I’m glad I could help. Great job on using your other senses by the way,” Aerith replied. Kairi smiles at Aerith.
Sora and Kairi return to their apartment as the Sun sets. They both breathe a sigh of relief to be home and in one piece. The set down their bags of supplies they got from Radiant Garden and the stores on Destiny Islands, and they both go to their room and sit on their bed to look out the window where the sunset shines.
“I’m sorry I pushed you back, Kairi. I never should’ve underestimated you,” Sora apologized.
“I know. You were keeping your end of the promise. And I wasn’t gonna let my blindness stop me from keeping my end of the promise,” Kairi replied.
“I am proud of you, Kairi,” Sora replied, placing his hand on Kairi’s shoulder.
“Sora, back there when we were waking up, I was aware of what my hands were doing, but were you about to. . .” Kairi tries to ask.
“Uh. . .yeah. I have thought about it for a while, and I felt like I was in the moment,” Sora replied while blushing.
“Well, what stopped you?” Kairi asked.
“Well, uh, I have put a lot of thought into it, and if we wanted to, I wanted the moment to feel just right and perfect. Let's not forget, since we're nowhere near ready for anything beyond that, I also wanted to make sure we did it safely,” Sora answered.
“I, uh, I wanted that same thing, too. And yeah, I also felt the same way,” Kairi added. She looks out the window. “This moment seems perfect to me.”
“Yeah. . .yeah. And I got what we’ll need,” Sora replied while pulling out a small packet with a circle object inside it. Kairi smiles at Sora. The two lean in and start kissing. Sora leans Kairi down onto the bed.
Outside the apartment, Riku was on a night stroll with Namine before heading back to their home.
“That was awesome how Kairi relied on her other senses and not her eyes. Without her help, I wonder how long it would’ve taken to beat that Heartless,” said Namine.
“Probably a lot longer. Our luck was not looking good, and I doubt we were gonna stop it quickly,” Riku replied. “Aqua really taught her well. She put a lot of work into her training to get stronger.”
“To protect the one she loves, and those she cares about. I wish I had that kind of power,” said Namine.
“I’m sure you do. Just need some help to find it,” Riku replied. Namine smiles. The two look up Sora and Kairi’s apartment to hear moans of pleasure from behind their window on the 2nd floor. A hand comes up onto the window and comes down. “Heh. They’re really doing it, huh? Whatever happens, we’ll be there for them. Strength to protect who and what matters most. Come on, Namine. What do you say we head home?”
“Sure. But do you wanna do take out before we return home?” Namine suggested while walking with Riku.
“What do you have in mind?” Riku asked.
Up in the apartment in Sora and Kairi’s room, the two left their clothes lying on the floor while doing it while also under their blanket. The two continue to moan with pleasure while also smiling at each other.
“You’re trembling, Sora,” Kairi noticed while looking up at Sora.
“It’s okay. Don’t worry about me,” Sora replied and they kept going. As the night sets in, the two have crashed out and all tucked into their blankets. Though they were safe with what they were doing, something magical is about to happen that will change their lives forever.
