Singing pulled him slowly from the darkness that had enclosed Morzan’s mind. He knew the voice, but he didn’t dare to open his eyes at first, afraid that it would just be a gentle memory to greet him to the other side.
Although a song of healing would be a bit too ironic for that, maybe. Who knew.
He furrowed his brows, blinked, startling at first at the strange darkness that curved far above him. While his aching body told him that he perhaps hadn’t died at all, the blackness made him fear that his eyesight might have left him. Thankfully, said darkness shifted a second later, letting a shaft of sunlight stream in, like a giant tent that had been opened a sliver to reveal the still smoke-heavy sky above Gil’ead.
Shruikan’s giant wings seemed to defy the very perception of reality as always.
Shruikan? He shouldn’t be here.
Morzan frowned and tilted his head to look over his surroundings. And right at Galbatorix sitting next to him, who was still singing but let his words slowly taper out at noticing his gaze.
“Morzan.”
He sounded so incredibly relieved, voice shaking just the slightest bit. Which was more than he would have ever allowed himself in any other situation.
It made Morzan’s heart clench.
“Torix? Why are you here? Where’s- Oh, no. I... I’m sorry, I...”
“Hush. I know. It doesn’t matter. Egg or no egg. I have the feeling that it’ll resolve itself anyway. And you’re far more important.”
Galbatorix turned his head to the side and stretched his hand out of Morzan’s vision. There was a shuffling noise and a second later, a large red scaled head appeared next to Morzan, making a small meowing noise. Relief hit him in a wave that almost made him dizzy. He hadn’t dared to stretch out his mind, in fear for finding a jagged hole where the bond sat. But there he was, his partner, safe and sound. Almost appearing like a hatchling under Shruikans giant wing. Morzan brushed a hand against his snout, then looked back up at Galbatorix.
“You healed him.” He tried to blink away the burning sensation behind his eyes.
“Right after I pulled you back from the brink.” He moved around, then carefully pulled Morzan’s head in his lap. “You scared me, love.” He leaned forward and placed a soft kiss on his forehead, as if afraid to break him. “I thought I lost you too.”
Morzan reached up, laying his hand on the other’s neck. It was to hold him in place so that he wouldn’t retreat to beat himself up about some imagined failure. But it was also nice to simply slip his hand higher and card his fingers through Galbatorix’ hair.
“I promised that I’ll never leave you, didn’t I? Although you did have to help me a bit in this case.”
“What horrible person would I be, to let my husband struggle alone?” He chuckled, smile widening even further at seeing Morzan’s answering fanged grin. “Rest, my love. There’s nowhere to be and nowhere to hurry right now.”
“Of course not. You’re here.”
