Work Text:

Jamie,

Congrats on the House Cup! I knew you guys would win!

So, I’m sure you’ve heard by now about my breakup with Victoire. Everyone is under the impression that this just happened, but we actually separated over the summer and didn’t tell anyone until now.

I’m sure that’s confusing to everyone, but it just worked for us. She didn’t want anyone in the family to stop being welcoming to me at family events, and she didn’t want their pity either. It was as mutual of a breakup as one can be, I imagine.

We’re still friends, but it is pretty awkward. It will be okay, though, and I hope no one is upset by me still attending family events. But I think your dad would hex anyone who tried to exclude me. And if he wouldn’t, then I know you’ve got my back.

I have to tell you something, though. This is something only Victoire knows. It’s not to do with why we broke up, not really. But I still thought you should know. I want you to know. I trust you won’t think differently of me, but you have to understand this is scary for me to admit when I don’t know how people will react.

I’m not straight. I am attracted to women, and I loved Victoire. But women are not the only people I’m attracted to. Muggles have a few labels for people like me. Words that the wizarding world has slowly been embracing. The label that feels best for me is “queer.”

I’ve known this most of my life, on some level, but it scares the shit out of me. But I’ve decided to embrace this side of me and start taking steps to feel more confident about it. The first step I’m taking is coming out to my loved ones. You’re the one I wanted to tell first because, despite our age difference, you’re my best friend. Also, I feel the most confident about your reaction. I plan to tell your parents next week.

Please remember, I’m still the same old Teddy. Well, actually, I’m on my way to being a better version of myself. One that is more accepting of myself and not held back by shame or fear.

Take care,
Teddy
